3rd Rail just re-released the Budd cars recently and I was able to buy one in correct configuration and livery for the Northern Pacific. In the 1950s, with the railroads forced by the Federal Government to continue mail and passenger service on otherwise unprofitable branch lines, many saw the RDC as a welcome economic savior. Out West where I grew up, they weren't used in commuter service but on rural routes through sparsely populated areas. NP used one in daily roundtrip service from Spokane, Washington via Pullman, Washington, and Moscow, Idaho, to Lewiston, Idaho. I would occasionally catch glimpses of it navigating through the rolling hills of wheat fields characteristic of the beautiful Palouse Country in southeastern Washington, so I just had to have one. Its a smooth runner with realistic sounds. Kudos to Scott Mann of 3rd Rail for making this rather obscure bit of American railroading history available to us in this fine O scale model.

F.Y.I. The trucks, couplers and underbody equipment on the P-RSL Budd RDCs was painted dark blue. Only the engine covers and battery compartments were left bare stainless steel. I have a gorgeous pair of powered "G" scale P-RSL Budd cars with sound that were produced by the now defunct Aristocraft Company. The underbody equipment is blue on my cars. My cars came with the safety stripes on the ends that P-RSL had in later years. I also have a vintage Lionel "O" scale Budd RDC in my collection.

I have a 2 rail undecorated version of this car, no sound or DCC etc and all windows / seats are visible. A smooth runner and the finish is superb. I got it on ebay here in the UK for £220 ($278) - an absolute bargain. The name 3rd rail was confusing but the seller assured me it was 2 rail !!

I rode the PRSL Budd cars servicing Rio Grande, Cold Spring and Cape May, NJ in the early 2000s with my daughters. My youngest used to call it the “camping train” as we had a seasonal site across from Cold Spring

Those scale cars look great. I rode a lot of them from Reading to Philly back in the 60’s.

I really like that RDC Budd car although I have never really paid much attention to them. Granted, nothing like this available in 'S', but definitely a nice looking model. Thanks for the video and review!!

I used to go to Cape May NJ all the time, they still have a handful of these RDCs preserved on a tourist railroad. Great unit

Good Morning Chris. Happy Holidays to you and your family. Rather than showing just a fraction of a seat then green board maybe they should have installed curtains. Over all they represent another great piece of history.

Always admired 3rd rails RDC's, only true O scale ones I think. This must be a very early version - they missed adding the PRSL orange and black stripes on the ends. Alternative way to hide the electronics in these MU's would be to have "shades" pulled down in those areas. Lots of people open up their passenger cars to add figures, would be nice to see if anyone tried to simulate pulled down shades (and how they did it).

That is really a beautiful model Chris. I actually rode a few of these when I lived in Canada in the mid 60's, if I remember right the service was VIA rail Canada. It would be fun to own one of these models and I hope Lionel, MTH or someone would recreate this model.

MTH made these in the past in the Railking line and Lionel has recently bought that tooling and offered the model again.

Neat model Chris! An interesting fact about those RDC's, when the Budd Company built them the carbodies were 100% stainless steel, even the rivets where used and welded otherwise. There's no record of an RDC body ever wearing or rusting out. Pretty remarkable!

These Budd cars are gorgeous. I missed the order deadline a few months ago to get the newest version. They finally offered Lehigh Valley, which is the one I wanted to get.
