There's a marine mercruiser intake manifold, single plane, for vortec heads on Amazon for about $250. It's a low profile speadbore cast iron intake setup for vortec head with the 8 vertical bolts. I had a Syclone, and it was really nice in a straight line. But the engine was all done at 4800 rpm. It was frustrating for a sports car guy like me to drive because the front end and rear end seemed to be on different schedules when negotiating a turn. It had a lot of initial understeer on turn-in, so I would crank a little more steering in. Then the rear end would start to come around, and I would have to unwind the wheel. The net result was that I could never carve a smooth arc through a turn, as in my Camaro. Another frustration was no manual transmission was available. The truck was great for passing traffic on two-lane roads. And when I put winter tires on it, the 0-60 acceleration on snow was stupendous. My fantasy was to put twin turbos on it and a cam that would get the engine to 5500 rpm, then a 6-speed manual, and an independent rear suspension. But i sold it before any of that could happen.

The 4.3 might not be a super dollar-friendly base for big power, but there are still a few folks out there building these things for boats, S-10s etc. that will find this invaluable. I’d really like to see what a split-pin 4.3 with the Brodix heads and a single plane with a healthier cam would do with that CXRacing unit. Now that would be a quick little fine rig.

Rich: Perhaps the thing to have tried would've been a Edelbrock Performer TBI manifold, bored-out & fitted with the TBI unit from a Mk 5 454 fitted with the injector spacer Holley offers for the GM TBI units. I'd still be blow-through, but at least you'd have a larger plenum in the manifold, and better control over fueling while introducing the fuel soon--which you say is best for best performance with injection--to help cool the boost charge.

Yes, I know they came with 4-bbl spread-bore carbs... but if I'm building an efficient, low-revving workhorse, I figure the vacuum signal I'd have with a 500-cfm 2-bbl would be far-better than what any 4-bbl could provide at WOT. Plus: No secondary tuning issues to worry about! ;)

I would like to see you do a GMC 351 V6 from the 60s. The 351 could then be compared to the Chevy 350 V8. Some of the cool things about the GMC V6s Are that they have sodium filled exhaust valves, actively oiled camshaft lobe’s, massive blocks and low compression ratio. They should be able to take quite the boost pressure. But my personal reason for wanting these tested is that I have two 702 cubic inch GMC V12s that have several components in common with the 351. But of course there are virtually no aftermarket parts you would have to have the stock Cam reground and make new intake and exhaust manifolds. Making a new intake manifold looks very simple though.

My plan is to make the automotive version of a P 38 fighter plane from World War II. A huge V 12 on each side, a little one man cockpit in between. the 12s will be turbo charge just as the P 38 with 2 water cooled intercoolers mounted inside 2 V6-92 Detroit blower housing in the valleys of each of the V 12s.

I have no idea whats gonna happen with it but I really want to put two turbos onto it too. I'm not sure how that'll work with the carbureted setup, I'm really new to a lot of the concepts I'm facing like the fuel system, boost, how your air system will work and won't work in it.

is the valve train instability on the second test caused by boost (dynamic cylinder and manifold pressure on valves). If everything else was the same (cam, valve train weight, spring pressure, oil pressure /did you loose some to feed the turbo collapsing the lifters a little) do you normally have to add spring pressure with boost.

The cast iron even fire crank is the weak point on these engines. An odd fire crank is stronger, but probably not the best choice for the street. It looks like the pre vortec intake was used. Edelbrock did make a vortec specific 4bbl intake. The ports in the vortec heads are significantly bigger than the earlier heads, so I suspect the correct intake is also larger than the one you used. Also GM performance made the high rise "Pontiac" Intake ,10093314 and a cross ram also. The cross ram is for raised runner heads.

I have a TBI Vortec 4.3 in my garage that I planned to put in a Jeep YJ a few years ago. The previous owner pulled it from his 1500 pickup to install a 6.0 for towing purposes. I don't know much about 4.3's though, and so I'd appreciate any info that would help me determine exactly what I have, especially the year it was made. I've since sold my Jeep, so I don't need the engine now, but I'm considering keeping it for a future project.

What I'm going with in my truck is a tall deck 427 with some Brodix Dragonslayer 320 heads, and a Comp Cams 268H, the one with over .5 lift. I know everyone will say I don't have enough cam, but that's the way I built it. If I want to make a little more power, all I have to do is a cam change. If I want to make a lot more power, I'll just add a cam and Blower, because you can't beat a BBBC 🤘😁🤘!

Need to do that 4.3 with those brodix heads
@cathygambill15544 жыл бұрын
The Brodix intake will only work with the head that it was design for. 23Degree or 18 degree intake port location is quiet a bit higher. When you go to that combo your gonna need some exotic valve train parts only made for those heads are required. I have built both the 12 degree and 18 degree versions and went with the odd fire crankshaft on the 18 degree version. As this becomes the limit in making power since split journal is limited to the 500 hp mark not to mention the rods. The next obstacle on the !8 degree would be finding a distributor ,as MSD no longer produces one. So even if your running a Carb you can get programable ignition and make a crank trigger. My 18 degree version is in progress now . As cam cores are not available for the firing order, I have found old busch series naturally aspirated cams. And that RPM range is way up there. So no streetable idle and also limits the power adders to small shots of nitrous even tho my intention was to build a multi-stage system with a 400 shot. oh well NA and A150 shot is the way I have to go and see what happens. Oh also the 18degree is 305.081 CID.

What In-line 6 cyl (besides a 2JZ) would make a strong stroker? Smooth torque and lower RPM. I ask because I’m used to driving a manual transmission and prefer the RPM range of Diesel engines. But without the hassle of diesel.
@-Atrocious4 жыл бұрын
Most any straight 6 makes good torque. I used to just stuff as big of piston in them as possible and try to get the best flowing head at low rpm avail with big valves and small runners. And would typically make a mule out of any of them. A straight engine naturally balances itself out so I just tryed to make a square bores out of them if poss. Meaning same size bore and stroke assuming rod ratio is decent. That will make make diesel pulling torque usually. 😉

We have Syclone and Typhoon from 1992. As far as engines go, the Buick 3.8 is a much better engine, and setup than the 4.3 that came in the trucks. The 4.3 in that application made insane torque, but as you saw no revs, not a great head.
@geoffmooregm4 жыл бұрын
But the 3.8L had a weak oiling system which was later solved in the 3800. The 4.3L got good heads with the 96+ Vortec engine. Not sure what had the better heads in final form. Was it the Vortec head or the Series III head? Either way neither late model head adapts easily to early engines and their respective blocks and manifolds but there is potential for these compact engines. I honestly like seeing anything obscure being modified and run even if it doesn't lay down huge numbers

@Insp3ctor13 care to divulge some info on your mild build? any do/don't pointers? was it a combo that was DD capable? i'm in the process of turning a 1993 sonoma OE 4.3 into a sleeper that i can wake up with my right foot and still be a resonable DD. my dad teases me about rolling around in my 'damn junk truck' but he doesn't appreciate my 'poor mans syclone inspired reboot'. so far... swapped the CAT out to use the stock mount/-Ypipe to remote mount a GT-3582, Explorer 8.8 w/ 3.73 LSD/disc brakes (narrowed to accommodate short axles x2, homebuilt triangulated 3-link, homebuilt coil-overs based on a pair of Monroe Sensa-trac shocks, s-10 blazer tank swap to the rear, repurposed stock tank mount for remote battery relocation (and pneumatic tilt bed to make service easier... with on-board compresssor/tank). just for grins i'm currently blowing thru the OE TBI... it's literally just kinda sitting on the air cleaner flange of the TBI and leaks like the lab in wuhan (on purpose atm)... so it's good to about 3/4 throttle then the ECM says 'nope' til your right foot takes the boost away. i've got a edelbrock performer and a killer race prepped 390cfm 4150 that's going on VERY soon =)

@@willspooner3071 a local shop built mine so I'm not sure about do's & don'ts & it would be reasonably DD friendly in my opinion (I may or may not be a little more lenient on my definition of DD friendly than most however) but it's in my Typhoon which isn't a DD vehicle. Currently I'm running a stock block bored .030 with splayed main caps, stock crank, Eagle H-beam rods & forged Mahle pistons, final compression is 8.7:1, a custom ground Comp Cams camshaft (.513/.513 lift on a 115 LSA), Vortec cylinder heads with a mild port/polish & stainless steel 1.94 intake & 1.60 exhaust valves & LS1 valve springs, Edelbrock 2114 intake manifold modified for fuel injection, Holley 120# injectors, a custom made elbow to mate up to the factory throttle body, SPA turbo manifolds & a Walbro 470lph E85 compatible fuel pump. Hey there jus watching thru the end of the video and if you can wiggle another test of the old 4.3 maybe with a stock cam and try the 1.6 ratio rockers in place of adding camshaft. How does more rocker affect power curves in stock trim engines? I have a very stock engine both in my current truck and on a stand in the backyard and preparing for turbo application i plan to file the rings for more gap, self port the intake and heads, have ebay cheapo headers that need a little bashing in to clear spark plugs but all in all your info and numbers have me thinking i am going a lil far for my needs as i dont think i want to run more than 8 psi until exta funds for v8 swap come available. The motor was cheap to buy itself and instead of a cam i am thinking keep the power curves it does make for more low end torque 2800 and if larger rockers give a lil extra umph then that plus boost = happy truck engine numbers!! If ya were closer to AZ id volunteer a dyno mule or motor to see what they do!! Happy friday to ya and keep the horsepower screaming!!
