Gold stays beautiful because it is a noble metal (a real phrase in chemistry), noble elements simply don’t react with anything in the normal environment. Seawater, burial, etc. just doesn’t affect it.

The writers excessive use of hyperbole is cringworthy.

I didn't find it cringeworthy. I loved the exaggerated expressions used in this documentary. Art is inflated. The propensity of artists and artistic impressions to be eccentric, and even egotistical are what make art such a fascinating thing. I thoroughly enjoyed this documentary. I'm not sure what you are referencing with regards to hyperbole, but I think that art lends itself to this type of verbiage.
