Just thought I'd help to clarify that the reason this says 4:57.260 instead of 4:57.410 was because there was a .016 second delay from the "start" to the split-second showing of the Mario sprite. Technically, it could be 4:47.250, but maybe Darbian knows more than I do about this. But you can see what I mean when you slow the video down to 0.25x speed. But yeah, this seems super legit. Congratulations! :D

Congrats on beating the speedrun record on _the_ 8-bit classic. The vast majority of the run _looks_ surprisingly straightforward. For that reason it might also be one of a few games where many players have _similar_ looking personal records without even knowing what a crazy optimization community exits out there that can tell you dozens of tricks even for a simple game like this and, if necessary, will find out how to turn a game those players thought they know completely on its head to find the most unlikely ways to save time, haha.

@5:09 how did you not die? Are you using a cheat code somehow, because you ran into those hammers and didn't die.

Due to hardware limitations, the NES can only support so many active hitboxes on the screen at once. When Bowser throws enough hammers, this limit is exceeded so the game cannot create any new hitboxes to go along with the hammer sprites. Basically, if enough hammers are thrown, some of them will be harmless. Bowser's pattern changes every 1/60th of a second, so in a speedrun we don't know if we'll actually survive the jump or not since we don't know which pattern we get until it's too late. Jump and pray.

I watched the entire video and there are many glitches to this game, especially his copy, allowing him to make impossible jumps, able to go down pipes that don't allow, and really the part of going down a pipe in world 4-2 and ending up at a warp zone is real crap.. All BULLSHIT!!!!!!

+bigorange2082 It's well known that you can jump over the piranha plants. As for the hammers, he jumped between two of them. As far as the warp pipes "cheating" - that makes zero sense. This is the world record for completing Mario Bros with warp pipes. There are records for completing Mario Bros without warp pipes. Both are different challenges. Both are relevant challenges. So gtfo with your faulty fucking logic.

Sonurus P He doesn't do this for the money... He does this for a challenge, for entertainment, to push his skills to the limit by trying to beat the game quickly, what he really earns is personal satisfaction. You can go to his stream whenever to watch him play live. Ask him to jump at a specific moment or something if you really doubt that he isn't actually playing. Just because someone is good doesn't mean it is fake. At least 8 people in the world have done runs that are under 5 minutes, all of them have been live gameplay and several of them have been at big events, like GDQ mentioned above, to show off their skills in case anyone would doubt. Many videos of that as well. Also, showing your hands while playing proves absolutely nothing, neither does having the TV on the camera screen nor being able to see the console on and the wire for the controller he's holding. You could even cheat if there are people in the room watching you play. Sometimes you should just not be ignorant, and believe what you see. =)

I can't even imagine how much practice that had to take. I had this game since 1988 when I got my first Nintendo at 12 years old and finally beat the game for the first time on April 19, 2015 at 38 years old. I could never get past all the Hammer Bros in world 8-3 until that one lucky time.
