I have reacquired my kit of Micro 4/3. I can hold these cameras and lenses even at 76. I really like the 12-60 2.8-4 on my G-8. This is a really nice body that probably was too expensive for a mass market. I use a 15 mm Lumix with a 20 mm f2 Olympus and a 42.5 Lumix and a much maligned 45-200 lens that LEAICA helped build. I have the 12-35 2.8 and the 35-100 2.8 I jump to the 100-300with the German tripod mount. I have acquired everything on eBay and found good quality. I tried full frame Sony but my Parkinson's kept me from using it, I am looking at a G9 Mark II once all this stuff is paid for. The lens I miss and cannot find is a 75 mm Olympus 1.8

Thank you for sharing! Olympus 75mm f1.8 is quite difficult to find these days, I must say I was extremely lucky to find it at such low price back in 2015.

really appreciate your videos as someone new to still photography and needing some advice that isnt geared towards vloggers and video recorders - your recommendations in this video gave me a great starting point to learn about some lenses in my budget.

I have all three of the panasonic lenses you included and they are great. My faves are the 42.5mm f1.7 and the 35-100mm f4-5.6. It’s assumed that you will get better results with pro lenses, but I find that the greatest gains come by improving my technique rather than my kit. The drawbacks to the pro lenses is their cost and weight. The one’s I’ve tried disappointed me. The Oly 12-40mm f2.8 pro was lovely, but I used it almost exclusively at the 40mm end, and found my Panny 42.5mm gave equally good IQ but better low light/subject separation, for well under half the price and weight.

35-100 for me and the Oly 45 1.8, probably for the same reasons. :-). What you say about the Oly 12-40 is interesting. I have been thinking about getting it, but tend to use my smartphone for wide angles/ indoors.

Thank you for sharing! Just like you, I think the 12-40mm is a great lens and I used it frequently, however I also much prefer to use smaller lenses I mentioned in this video whenever I can.
@Gary_W
@Gary_W 11 ай бұрын
Roderick, the reason I got the 12-40mm f2.8 is only to replace my broken 12-35mm f2.8 for event photography and event video, and sometimes also for recording B rolls where I want to minimize lens changing. If you don't mind lens changing, then I think you'll be fine without the 12-40mm f2.8 😁

Great video. I am actually thinking of getting the 12-32 kit lens for my gx85 just to have something small on it.

Hello Bo, thank you for the kind comment! If I remember correctly, a few years ago you posted your travel camera setup with the GH4 and the power zoom Lumix 14-42 lens, that power zoom 14-42mm lens could work well too for the GX85. But anyway, the 12-32 can be found really cheap and it's a fantastic lens that I can also recommend. Cheers 😁

Great list, great advice. I personally really like the 20mm f1.7. It really is all that, if you like the 35-40mm ff focal length (which I do). It would be past perfect and into legendary territory if it were weather sealed.

20mm version one is slightly sharper than version II. Not a big difference. Panny 42.5 is seriously sharp, but for portraits you may prefer the Olly which is less sharp on the edges, but that's good for portraits.

Thank you for sharing! I didn't know that the 20mm f1.7 mk I is sharper than the mk II, I always had the impression that both are essentially the same optical design, but in different enclosure.

Thanks Gary, a very useful video. I love the Lumix 12-60 f3.5-5.6 which although longer than the 35-100 is still light and great value for money. However I’m thinking of getting the 35-100. I also love using vintage lenses, especially Olympus OM & Pentax SMC primes.

The Oly 17mm f1.8 is also pretty good. Optically it might be a bit less than the lensses mentioned here but it is reallly not easy to tell the difference. If I am allowed only one lens I would go with this one because of the versatility of the focal length. One step back it is like a 28mm ff, one step forward it is like a 50mm. There are good reasons why 35mm was the default focal length for point-and -shoot cameras in the old days

Hello, I am a newbie and found my mom's Olympus PEN EP-3 camera with broken lens. Looking through the specs I found that it uses micro 4/3 lens. Will all of your recommendation lenses fit my mom's camera? Thank you for the video!

They all will work with your PEN E-P3 with no problem at all. You should also consider some Olympus versions of these lenses, there are the 14-42mm EZ kit lens, 17mm f2.8 pancake lens, both are awesome alternatives as well.

I mostly user OM1 with Zuiko Pro Lenses and Panaleicas and also use Lumix GM1 + 20mm 1.7f. Quite often it's hard to tell looking at the picture, if it's f.e. OM1 + 17mm 1.2f Zuiko or GM1 :) For me it was it's like 3000€ (new) vs less than 300€ (ebay), quite hard to accept

That's the law of diminishing return in effect, sometimes we don't always get significant jump in result/performance by choosing more expensive gear. Cheers!

if you look from quality produce by the lense of 35-100 mm f4-5.6 and 14-140, which lense will produse more quality ?
@Gary_W
@Gary_W 10 ай бұрын
Sharpness wise, 35-100mm f4-5.6 is slightly sharper, but 14-140 is so much easier to use due to the all in one focal length. In the end, the sharpness difference is not too significant, I am fine using those two lenses and got great results using either one.
