When T budding can to insert multiple buds of different varieties? Awesome video's
@madisoncitrusnursery4 ай бұрын
I assume it would be possible but I cant imagine any benefit as if it did work youd have 2 branches growing out run under each other. It would make more senses to do a second one elsewhere to add a second variety that would be more balanced of a placement.

Great video Hershell, excellent demonstration! I've mostly been doing both cleft grafts and chip budding with my citrus, but I will give this method a go next year 👍. It's a shame I can't get budwood or plants from your nursery over here in the UK.

@madisoncitrusnursery4 ай бұрын
The rootstock? They are all grown in 1 gallon pots really tight together so they do not have a lot of opportunity to branch. We also never prune them so they just grow straight up.

I want to find out which orange nursery grows to be a big tree with sweet oranges.
@madisoncitrusnursery2 ай бұрын
I think most nurseries have the ability to however in the nursery business the most costly thing in the nursery is greenhouse space. In the area it would take to grow a 7 gallon tree with decent branching you could grow 80 or so 1 gallon trees. So in order for that 7 gallon tree to make sense youd have to charge at the very least, the same cost as (80) 1 gallon trees and honestly it would be more like 80 x 6 as you could likely turn that space 6 times with one gallons while trying to grow that 1 single 7 gallon tree. Then you get into the cost of shipping a large tree.. Your best best for larger trees would be non certified local garden centers that can grow them outside in containers where space is cheaper but then you run the risk of diseases and pests. Id just buy a 1 gallon of the variety you want and in 3 years it will be a big tree if you strip fruit for the first 2-3 years or buy a 3 gallon and get to that point a year or so sooner.

Does Madison nursery sell US 942 rootstock seed?
@madisoncitrusnursery4 ай бұрын
We do not sell seed. We do sell the rootstock that you see in the video, on the website. In the past we had sold some smaller seedlings in a 5 pack but im not sure if we will be doing that again. We have other rootstock available on the website as well.

My grafts all failed... is there a particular time frame to graft? I'm in the midwest and tried to graft onto flying dragon root stock in January ish. Had the plants in my grow tent at 70 degrees with 10 hours of full spectrum grow light with 50% humidity.
@madisoncitrusnursery4 ай бұрын
In all honesty we graft just about year round in the greenhouse and it does get down to about 45 in the winter. One thing with Flying Dragon is that it does tend to go semi dormant earlier in the winter and starts actively growing later in the spring hence its dwarfing characteristics so that may have been part of the issue. I think you would have better success grafting to semi-dwarf or standard rootstock and waiting until its actively growing / pushing before grafting.

What graft material, nutrients are you using and do you have air movement?
@justinh93474 ай бұрын
@Robert-cd2ht yuzu bud, flying dragon rootstock. Yes, air movement used clonex nutrients.
@Robert-cd2ht4 ай бұрын
@@justinh9347 Ok I will recommend increasing the sap Brix a few weeks before grafting. You can foliar feed with quality kelp extract this should help greatly.
@justinh93473 ай бұрын
@Robert-cd2ht I've got growmore seaweed extract and bloom city clean kelp. I think I'll research root stocks a bit more. I think some moisture might have gotten on them, I had them by the humidifier while I was doing everything.

It seems as though citrus trees are grafted pretty high on the rootstock, is there a reason for this?
@madisoncitrusnursery4 ай бұрын
We graft between 4-6" because that is a comfortable height for us, its where the rootstock is able to be bent over without breaking and there is research showing that the rootstock needs to have some available stem / bark to be able to tell when to go semi dormant due to temperature change. We have seen others who grafted 12-18" high and we dont see any real benefit to that other than maybe having a larger, sellable tree, faster but that may be a question for the nurseries that do it that way.

We do not sell rooting hormone nor do we use it. I am sure you can find some options on Amazon as well as some of the big box stores like Home Depot or Lowes.

He said there's a problem with cleft grafting-- did I miss what the problem is?
@madisoncitrusnursery2 ай бұрын
I spoke with Hershell and he said When you cut the tree off it puts it in a state of shock and when the graft starts to grow out and gets to the 5-7 leaf stage it will sometimes die off because the root system failed as a result of that shock. In our tests they were dying 60% of the time. Your results may vary but for us we couldnt stay in business with a 40% success rate.

I got budwood for 4 types of kumquat from Madison Citrus that had diameters of ¼ inch or less. I used them to make more than 16 cleft grafts. They all failed. Don’t think that it was due to my inexperience because I have cleft grafted citrus before (diameters of at least 3/8 inch) and have had a success rate of at least 50%. Have also clefted grafted apples and pears with 100% success rate. I emailed them telling them of my failures and they basically said “tough luck”. I am very happy with the trees I bought from them but will never buy budwood again and reconsidering buiying trees from them again, considering the way they treated me..
@madisoncitrusnursery4 ай бұрын
Hello Slava, I am one of the 2 people that was in the email chain when you had emailed us. The budwood we sell is cut fresh the morning they are shipped and they are cut by Hershell the one doing the grafting and you can see the size of the budwood he had. That is the size of the budwood we use when grafting and he will not send any budwood that he wouldnt use himself. As we expressed in the email, we are sorry you did not have success with the budwood however to have a 100% failure rate you had something else going on that caused the failures. As for you being happy with the trees you had purchased, that is great to hear and we appreciate that. As for losing you as a customer, we obviously hate to have that happen and im sorry to hear it. Our budwood is sold as budwood and the success rate is up to the grafter and the technique used. We just cant guarantee success rates.
@slava7903 ай бұрын
@@madisoncitrusnursery I have reconsidered and decided that I will try grafting your budwood next spring using exactly the techniques you describe in this video.
@madisoncitrusnursery3 ай бұрын
We appreciate that and definitely recommend the side veneer graft as that is the ONLY way we graft in the greenhouse. Of the varieties you ordered bud wood of, I will say Meiwa is tough to graft for us, our success rate is closer to 50-60% take on those the others are 90-95%. Send us an email prior to ordering your budwood in the Spring. All the best and happy growing.

dont let your failures get you down learn from them all varieties don't graft the same some are much harder to get to take my last grafting session I grafted 15 amoa 8 tangor mandarins 15 vanilla blood oranges and 18 prague chimera / satusma the amoa 8 began pushing buds in a week and ended up with 11 out of the 15 taking. The vanilla after to months I had 4 pushing an 6 still viable but no buds pushing and the prague after 2 months 4 of the original 18 are still green and viable but none have pushed yet All used the same technique same root stock every thing I also top grafted 2 of the vanilla on a mature 8 ft tree in my greenhouse And the took and have 6 in of new growth. Go figure it isn't an exact science but learn from failures and keep pressing on. I will say hershalls bud wood is top of the line and he goes out of his way to provide hobbyist with clean budwood at an affordable price compared to a source on the left coast charges five dollars a bud 75 bucks for what you get from madison for fifteen would you go out in the greenhouse cut budwood package it print labels include everything nessary to do the graft then ship it for that? Not many would it is obvious he loves what he does
