Ive only used 511 and cactus mix, thanks for the video

We appreciate the feedback. As long as you properly fertilize with a well rounded fertilizer 5-1-1 isn't a bad option. I saw that you are also in GA. What varieties of citrus are you growing? Is there anything else you are looking to grow?

Ive been waiting for this video to come out thank you! I'm going back and forth which soil to repot my 2 yr old citrus trees. I used various soils last year to conduct my own test. Mostly all foxfarm soils with added small fir bark. I lost a Calamondin this winter, had my soil tested and i had too many nutrients in it, super high in calcium, salt, and my pH was 5.2. i need to repot my trees before I lose another, i think my well water was the result of that plus grow more citrus fertilizer 1/8tsp in 3 gallons each time i watered. This has given me some insight and im gonna repot with my own 5-1-1 and let the trees breathe before i come back with any fertilizer. Question for you, if you were repoting with known bad soil would you remove most of the soil and wash out the roots before putting in fresh soil or just repot and put fresh soil around existing rootball? Growing in zone 5b dry high elevation

I've had issues with Foxfarm soils too. Mainly compaction. Also, signs of nutrient burn.

Sorry it took a couple days, I talked to Hershell about this and he recommended putting the tree with the intact rootball in new / better mix. He said he would worry that bare rooting it to remove the mix would cause more trauma to the roots that are left and be more risky to the tree than the alternative.

@@madisoncitrusnursery thank you so much for the insight! My trees will be much happier now! I bought a bag of stagreen after watching your trial run with various soils and opted to make my own 5-1-1 with that added

I was surprised that despite 2 kinds of fertilizers used there were still nutrient deficiencies on some trees. Somehow miracle grow has even less nutrients than 5-1-1? Curious. Appreciate the tests, thank you. I trust the citrus professionals at Madison, 5x trees for each test, a few different fertilizer variations -- probably a better test than most folks at home would do. I'd hope y'all can justify the time/effort to continue publishing more of these tests in the future. I am in the PNW, Seattle WA 8b. I use 4 parts Miracle Grow Citrus & Cactus with 1 part of added perlite in a 5/7/12 gallon Air Pot, Urban Farm Apples & Oranges liquid fertilizer (4.5-2-4.2) on most waterings, and Miracle Grow Shake 'n Feed Citrus, Avocado, and Mango slow release (8-2-10) added every 2-3 months.

Thank you for the kind words and we didnt look at any of the roots. I would almost venture a guess that there may be some root issues in the MG moisture control and possibly even the palm and cactus that caused less of the nutrients to be used. We also didnt add the starter fertilizer or the minors nutrient packs to the big box store mixes as they were the ones that already had their fertilizer in the mix, its possible those dont have enough of the minors included. Just speculation at this point.

Hey just got tree in mail today and cant wait to pot it this helps any other lowes brand soil mix to use
@madisoncitrusnursery6 ай бұрын
I believe Lowes has all 3 big box store mixes we tested but the only one would could recommend from the results we saw was the StaGreen Potting Mix. Just as a note though, your results could vary based on climate, pot size, tree variety etc. Just a disclaimer that we make no guarantees, we are just trying to pass on the results we got.

🎉nice testing. What is the base NPK to use 9-1-1 vs the 13-6-6
@madisoncitrusnursery6 ай бұрын
Thank you and great question as I may not have explained that well. 911 isn't the NPK, it is the name we gave the nutrient pack we offer for customers to add to their DIY mixes hence its name is 911 for your 5-1-1. The 13-6-6 is however NPK for a higher nitrogen slow release citrus fertilizer we use in house and also add as a started charge to the potting mix we sell.

Thank you for sharing! Very interesting experience. I was wondering, seeing these moisture-saturated substrates, how do you manage phytophthora issues? Do you treat the trees preventively?
@madisoncitrusnursery5 ай бұрын
We dont really ever have an issue with it, with our inhouse mix. We do use a pretty standard fungicide when we water but it isnt for root rot prevention.

Very nice video. I have my trees planted in your Madison soil mix but I'm still afraid to keep them as wet at what you have in your greenhouse. After suffering root rot issues with so many of my trees (before I started using your mix), I'm a bit gun shy about the water. I live in Wisconsin so we don't have the consistent heat you have in your greenhouse. Do you know if root rot is more prevalent in soil that stays a bit cooler? Should I be able to water more in your mix no matter what the temperature? My soil is never as dark as in your videos because it is so dry on top, my trees are living, just not growing too fast. I do really like the soil and think my trees are doing better than before I started to use it.

Hi Dave, great question! Don’t try to keep them wet, concentrate on keeping them damp. We allow ours to dry slightly between watering. We do not saturate the entire rootball. It’s watered over the top and what goes through is absorbed up from the bottom. Damp is the key, not waterlogged or wet feet. We also use a fungicide in our water to help keep rot at bay.

Keep in mind the best test is to test potting soils for at least 3 or 4 years. Forest byproducts will rot after one year and destroy the trees.
@madisoncitrusnursery6 ай бұрын
4 year tests would be great but would have 4+ worth of variables and have their own set of issues introduced. We have all of our increase trees in the greenhouse that are in bark based mixes that get topped at 6-10 feet over and over and over again so the "rotting after one year and destroy the tree" thing is definitely an opinion vs the actual results we are seeing.

Do ya’ll add fungicides to control root rot?
@madisoncitrusnursery5 ай бұрын
We inject a normal regimen of fungicide into our watering but nothing specific to control root rot, we really have any issues with it.
