What time of yr is the best time to prune
@madisoncitrusnursery
@madisoncitrusnursery 4 күн бұрын
It depends on where you live and if you grow in ground or in containers. If you are growing in containers and protect your trees in winter you can prune almost year round for shape but keep in mind it may reduce your fruit production for that season. In ground we recommend waiting until spring to prune just so new tender growth isnt exposed to colder freezing weather.

Can you give them too much water to where the fruit it bland? My Xie Shan Satsuma was the size of a softball and pretty bland. The tree is growing nice though.
@madisoncitrusnursery
@madisoncitrusnursery 13 күн бұрын
The goal is consistency, keeping the soil moisture consistent without the drastic fluctuations so there really wouldnt be a "too much" water if you are basing if off of keeping the mix consistently moist. With that said the blandness or insipidness looks to possibly be more from temperature. I found this pdf that may help explain some of it better than I can crec.ifas.ufl.edu/media/crecifasufledu/extension/extension-publications/2011/2011_Dec_factors_citrus.pdf

Our success rates are so much higher the way we do it. We have another video showing a few different grafting methods we have used in the past and that others use and talk about some of the differences. But the reason we do it the way we do is we have much higher success rates this way.

Excellent video - easy to follow. Thanks! Our friend gave us a 5-year old Meyer Lemon tree, grown from seeds. It won't flower or grow fruits. Can we use it as a rootstock and graft a different citrus tree (e.g lime)? If we do that, should we trim off all the leaves and branches? or can we leave some branches a leaves on while grafting a budwood? Thanks!
@madisoncitrusnursery
@madisoncitrusnursery 18 күн бұрын
Keep in mind that it may take seed grown lemons 10+ years to produce fruit. Rooting cuttings and grafting shortcut the process allowing you to get fruit sooner but it also doesnt allow the trees to grow a large root system and supporting branches before they do. There are tradeoffs to everything. Give it a chance to get old enough to flower and fruit before saying it wont. But as for using it as rootstock, you can if youd like to and you can graft to the main stem or to a limb. There should be youtube videos that show you how.

@madisoncitrusnursery
@madisoncitrusnursery Ай бұрын
We think it can go both ways. If you catch them soon enough snip them off, if it would be beneficial for the shape of your tree them let them grow and become another straight trunk and they will fill out over the next couple years and then bloom / fruit. Its one of those things that can go either way, it just depends on what makes the most sense for your specific tree and its shape.

It seems as though citrus trees are grafted pretty high on the rootstock, is there a reason for this?
@madisoncitrusnursery
@madisoncitrusnursery Ай бұрын
We graft between 4-6" because that is a comfortable height for us, its where the rootstock is able to be bent over without breaking and there is research showing that the rootstock needs to have some available stem / bark to be able to tell when to go semi dormant due to temperature change. We have seen others who grafted 12-18" high and we dont see any real benefit to that other than maybe having a larger, sellable tree, faster but that may be a question for the nurseries that do it that way.

My grafts all failed... is there a particular time frame to graft? I'm in the midwest and tried to graft onto flying dragon root stock in January ish. Had the plants in my grow tent at 70 degrees with 10 hours of full spectrum grow light with 50% humidity.
@madisoncitrusnursery
@madisoncitrusnursery Ай бұрын
In all honesty we graft just about year round in the greenhouse and it does get down to about 45 in the winter. One thing with Flying Dragon is that it does tend to go semi dormant earlier in the winter and starts actively growing later in the spring hence its dwarfing characteristics so that may have been part of the issue. I think you would have better success grafting to semi-dwarf or standard rootstock and waiting until its actively growing / pushing before grafting.

I got budwood for 4 types of kumquat from Madison Citrus that had diameters of ¼ inch or less. I used them to make more than 16 cleft grafts. They all failed. Don’t think that it was due to my inexperience because I have cleft grafted citrus before (diameters of at least 3/8 inch) and have had a success rate of at least 50%. Have also clefted grafted apples and pears with 100% success rate. I emailed them telling them of my failures and they basically said “tough luck”. I am very happy with the trees I bought from them but will never buy budwood again and reconsidering buiying trees from them again, considering the way they treated me..

Hello Slava, I am one of the 2 people that was in the email chain when you had emailed us. The budwood we sell is cut fresh the morning they are shipped and they are cut by Hershell the one doing the grafting and you can see the size of the budwood he had. That is the size of the budwood we use when grafting and he will not send any budwood that he wouldnt use himself. As we expressed in the email, we are sorry you did not have success with the budwood however to have a 100% failure rate you had something else going on that caused the failures. As for you being happy with the trees you had purchased, that is great to hear and we appreciate that. As for losing you as a customer, we obviously hate to have that happen and im sorry to hear it. Our budwood is sold as budwood and the success rate is up to the grafter and the technique used. We just cant guarantee success rates.

We appreciate that and definitely recommend the side veneer graft as that is the ONLY way we graft in the greenhouse. Of the varieties you ordered bud wood of, I will say Meiwa is tough to graft for us, our success rate is closer to 50-60% take on those the others are 90-95%. Send us an email prior to ordering your budwood in the Spring. All the best and happy growing.
