The trees look fantastic and love the trees I get from you. Is there a shading in the plastic that you grow in or just clear greenhouse plastic i worry that mine get dry this time of year and loosing a lot of leaves I’m not sure if that’s what happens more often with flying dragon rootstock on my dwarf trees. Thanks again for your great information.

Is it possible to make a short video explaining the difference between terminal and non terminal buds?
@madisoncitrusnursery
@madisoncitrusnursery 21 сағат бұрын
Im sure we can but I dont think we need to. Non terminal buds are just the rest of the buds and the terminal bud growth ring is where your trees branch stopped growing last season and then started growing out again this season. Its basically where the tip bud stopped for the year and then started again the next year. It creates a "ring" and the back color changes between last years growth and this years growth. That is the terminal bud growth ring.

Do you offer a short bushy type tree instead of that tall slender one if I ask for one?
@madisoncitrusnursery
@madisoncitrusnursery 2 күн бұрын
All of our trees are grown close together. If you were to purchase a 3 gallon tree they will have started to branch out more as they are pruned and spaced out so they can develop a branch structure. With that said our recommendation would be exactly what is stated in this video, prune your tree upon arrival and shape it into the tree youd like it to be. But otherwise no we do not have bush vs tree options available.

Can you air layer the top off first instead? 🤔
@madisoncitrusnursery
@madisoncitrusnursery 5 күн бұрын
That is the beauty of it, you can do anything youd like to. We dont personally recommend it as pruning just above the terminal bud is too important to us to encourage branching. You "could" air layer much higher then when you cut that off later then prune where you need to for the terminal bud growth ring. You could also just root what you cut off as cuttings, or graft what you cut off as budwood, or just buy 2 trees and have much more fruit much faster. But to each their own!

When he snips the top of the tree and mentions pruning above the terminal bud growth ring he says it will branch out there which is how you turn that into a tree. If you want it to be more of a bush you can snip it above the next terminal bud growth ring down and it will branch lower.

I heard you are not suppose to touch the tree with plastic.Does the plastic from the trash bags damage the tree?
@madisoncitrusnursery
@madisoncitrusnursery 13 күн бұрын
It does not damage the tree. Its very likely what you heard was no letting an outside layer of plastic touch the tree because plastic conducts the cold and whatever it touches will still freeze. In the case of the plastic bag it has the warmer water in it so the temperature that transfers isnt the freezing cold. In general you want a buffer or insulator between any outside freezing layer of plastic. Thats the not the same thing and the issue isnt "the plastic" its the temperature going through the plastic. I hope this helps.

How do you feel about growing citrus in Grow Bags? I know int he hot summer they can tend to dry out a bit faster but I always see that Citrus does better drying out a bit between waterings.
@madisoncitrusnursery
@madisoncitrusnursery 17 күн бұрын
We havent done it but im sure it can be done. Just the fact that you understand it can tend to cause them to dry faster means you may have a good chance at doing it successfully. I have seen people use 511 in a cloth grow bag and never be able to keep up with watering. As long as it makes sense for where you are and you use the appropriate mix you can likely do ok with it. One tip is you can use plastic wrap around the pot in the summer if you find that you are having a hard time keeping up with watering so it doesnt dry out quite as quickly during just those months.

Will the parafilm rot away before the buds break or do we cut it away manually in order for the graft to take off?
@madisoncitrusnursery
@madisoncitrusnursery 19 күн бұрын
The buds will push through the parafilm. That is why we only wrap them once over the bud. So there is no need to cut it. The parafilm will eventually turn black, deteriorate and fall off on its own later.

Scale is the biggest issue for me. During the summer it's not a huge issue, but once they come in for winter the scale just pop up in what seems to be a day. Safari is what Hershell recommends for numerous things including scale. Its not cheap but the bottle will last you forever. That is the biggest issue with what nurseries use vs what homeowners or hobbyists would use is cost / size of the container / value you get out of it.

But should the bark turn from green brown? At what point should I call it dead?
@madisoncitrusnursery
@madisoncitrusnursery 24 күн бұрын
In general going from green to brown isnt a good sign however if you keep the soil moist (not wet) and keep it over 40 degrees then wait and see if it grows any new green growth in the spring. Dont prune anything just wait and see. If its a rooted cutting or a seed grown tree then it has a good chance at growing back, if its grafted then you may get it to grow back or it might come back as rootstock. Dont give up until it doesnt grow at all in the Spring. Fingers crossed!

Grapefruit tend to want to grow big but we have a lot of customers that do have them growing in containers with good success. If you live in an area where its too cold to plant in the ground a larger container is a fine option. We actually really like Genetic Dwarf Grapefruit which is available on our website madisoncitrusnursery.com , its flavor is really good and it does tend to be a little smaller of a tree. Looked to me like the miracle grow and sta-green had the tallest plants. They all three also had no duds! To have a fair test, all plants needed to receive the same exact fertilizer. I would like to see this test again, but with all the plants getting the same amount and type fertilizer. Interesting results for sure.
@madisoncitrusnursery
@madisoncitrusnursery Ай бұрын
All of the plants were given fertilizer injected at the same rate so the nutrient deficiencies you see with a mix seems to have something to do with the mix not the fertilizer. We would love to see any results you get if you were to run a similar experiment so we can compare. But in this test the nutrient deficiencies seem relatively obvious and werent from a lack of fertilizer.
@madisoncitrusnursery
@madisoncitrusnursery Ай бұрын
Sta-green actually did incredibly well and is an option we recommend for anyone that would prefer to find something at a big box store. The reason for the test was 2 fold, first to find a good big box store option that someone wouldnt need to pay for shipping to find and second to test our in house mix and nutrient pack vs everything else. The only thing different was the initial precharge of fertilizer that comes with mixes themselves and as a real world test it wouldnt make sense to somehow try to change the product before testing it. We did it just how a consumer would, buy, up pot and then start fertilizing after that.

@madisoncitrusnursery
@madisoncitrusnursery 25 күн бұрын
Thank you for the reply and trusting us with your citrus purchase. Its possible I didnt do a great job explaining. Our mix comes with a starter charge of our 13-6-6, the miracle grows come with a starter charge of whatever they put in it, stagreen has their starter charge and then you get into the 511 which has no starter charge so it only has what you add to it. To the 511 we added our 13-6-6, then one a row with our 13-6-6 + our nutrient mix, then a row of just our nutrient mix. We offer a nutrient mix to amend 511 since most people that make it dont add enough of the minors. Thats why the text was box store mixes and then some 511 nutrient tests. If you or your coworkers have any questions that we can help with, shoot us an email. Thank you and keep growing!

There are a few factors to consider, if you are growing in a container then you can get trees shipped to you as soon as the weather is over 40 at night for the week and then you can up pot them and grow them protected in a container. If you are planning on planting the in ground then it likely makes more sense to get your order shipped in the Spring so you can put it in ground then to give it as much time in the ground before protecting it for winter. Where in NC are you located?

We have an uppotting video that talks about that.
