The final point he makes is key. I messed up in a MATCH cover 4 at the end of a game and let a wr run wide open. I like to play MLB position but if your opponent comes out in a funky formation and you dont immediately understand what your position should do just drop down to a DL and rush the QB. Its a good way to learn how coverages work too by watching the CPU run it then you can man up next time.

Understanding the matching principles are huge. Running cover 4 qt/palms and cov 3 match is awesome. Just dont forget what your job is lol

In my experience match defenses are susceptible to well designed outside stretch runs and outside screens. It should only be run if you are certain a downfield pass play is coming and you have good man defenders. Also if you shade coverage overtop or underneath, that will also change match coverage back to zone.

At the end you basically just described man coverage. Why not just run man coverage if your DBs are just all going to play man across the guy in front of them?

Man gets beat way easier bc you’re playing straight up. Match allows defenders to sit in an area and react to more dangerous routes coming to them or them going to cover less dangerous routes. It’s run very often in college and the nfl. Saban was famous for running match effectively.

Any chance you can explain how Match differs from playing Man? Admittedly, I might be missing something obvious, but it seems like in Match, your guys are playing Man, but showing Zone pre-snap?

Also love the callout about why you sometimes may find yourself getting burnt by a wide open receiver. I'd had that happen to me a few times in recent games and sure enough, I'm sure it's because I was user'ing a backer that should have matched up on the receiver rather than sitting in a specified zone.

In man they line up on the WR and play straight up. In Match they lineup in their zones and wait there for a receiver to enter that zone. If no one shows up they stay there and it's a better D to help stop a QB scramble. Straight man can get burnt on QB scrambles if they run a flood to one side cause it leaves no one behind.

anybody have tips on how to beat mesh concepts? just lost to someone spamming it the whole game and i was using the cover 3 match concept. after catching on to when he was calling mesh, i started hard flatting and then he would scramble and playmaker the drag over the hard flat. tried sending my qb spy to get the qb as soon as he scrambles but he would never get there quick enough. also he would send the short curl on a deep crosser and i would have to choose between usering the cross or the playmaker drag and it killed me. should i have taken my chances with man coverage?

Just hard flat cover 3 works for me if you pass off the drags to the hard flats properly

Against the CPU, Cov 3 match mixed with a good blitz play on run downs is about all you need. But against users, you gotta mix it up more. Cov 3 match is vulnerable in the flats so sometimes - depending on offensive formation - I’ll hard flat one of the ends or I’ll switch to a Cov 2 or Cov 2 man with inside + underneath shade
