FLY FISHING FOR BIG BROWN TROUT AND RAINBOW TROUT IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS!
In this video Andrew and I spent 4 days trout fishing in the late winter of Colorado's Rocky Mountains. Colorado has arguably some of the best trout water in America and although winter trout fishing can be tough, you can always find some good fishable water. Fly fishing paradise!
If you were going to choose to go out to the Rocky Mountains to fly fish I’d say most people would rather do it just about any time other than the winter… But unfortunately Andrew and I don’t get to choose when we go fishing, so when Andrew hit me up and said he needed some help moving I jumped at the opportunity to tangle with some late winter Trout in Colorado. I mean, cmon, who would turn down a chance to fish some of the best trout water in America?
SOME WINTER TROUT FISHING TIPS AND TRICKS (for the rockies):
1. One thing worth mentioning when you’re out trying to make the best of a winters day is to look for the best weather to fish. If you go to your planned location and it’s a blizzard, try a different area. Weather in the mountains is unpredictable and sometimes a 30 minutes drive can be the difference between you catching fish and you digging your car out of a snow bank. In this case we turned a seemingly miserable day into a moment of bliss.
2. When you’re winter fishing sometimes it’s worth looking for tailwater and small creeks that aren’t completely frozen over. Tailwaters work well because their flows and water temperatures are regulated by dams which provides a more stable environment for trout in both the winter and the summer, while small streams virtually guarantee that you’re putting your flies in front of fish. Plus, in a lot of small streams the fish don’t have a ton to eat to begin with, so offering up a juicy stonefly or jig streamer may just be too much for them to resist.
3. HEAD SOUTH! One thing that I’ve always tended to do when the weather is cold is to head south. And whether that’s me going down to NC or Georgia when I’m out east, or in this case, heading down further south in Colorado, I can almost always find warmer weather... or at least and area with less snow.
I ended the trip with one more good brown and then we headed out. Interestingly enough I caught my last brown of the trip and my first brown of the trip on the same fly, a small leach jig streamer we had gotten at a fly shop outside of Colorado Springs. As with all trips, the ending was bittersweet. We had explored some new areas, caught some good fish, and enjoyed our time fishing in the Rocky Mountains. As for me, I headed back to West Virginia to get back to the regular grind of my day job. As for Andrew, he settled into Colorado and has been living there ever since. We don’t get to spend nearly as much time on the water as we did before his move out west, but that just makes every trip more memorable. I truly hope you enjoyed this video and if you’d like to see more long form, film style videos let me know. And as always, thanks for watching.
Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed this fly fishing film!

We have a river like that here in Utah. The big browns just stack up in a certain deep hole. I have seen up to 26" caught in it. It's always an awesome time when I go there. Great video!

I have one question though: did you guys use sinking lines or other means to lower the streamers?
@hardmanfishing
@hardmanfishing 4 ай бұрын
Most of the time we were using a Leech streamer on a euro style tight line rig on this particular trip. So we didn't need the sinking line.

What a great place with plenty of fish, I still have difficulty appreciating the size of your fish when you just measure them. As I've said before here in the UK we always weigh our fish. The scenery looks stunning but you didn't show us any mountains.

@MacDaddyDoubleD

I hope this isn’t a stupid question but I noticed in lots of your videos your stripped line still has memory loop from when it was on a spool - is that something that people gotta worry about? Everyone online tells me it’s detrimental to stretch it out but you’re slaying with no issues at all. Love the content man, cheers.

It matters only if ur going for a long casts. It can effect fly performance on a water and distance you cast. Since he is fishing mostly close distance it doesnt matter much. Mostly if your line is Doin this you have a bad line. Line memory is sign your line is bad made or designed bcs it has strong memory. Good lines dont do that.
@jacobmayoral7614
@jacobmayoral7614 4 ай бұрын
@@theyoren9720I wouldn’t say it doesn’t make a difference but it’s probably cold as hell and the line will hold memory regardless. It’s always a good idea to stretch your line

@@jacobmayoral7614 sure it does but i have experience fishing every year in winter in Slovakia sometimes it hits -10 and my line never did that.

@OpportunityFishing 4 ай бұрын
@@theyoren9720is that Celsius or Fahrenheit? -10 Celsius is about 14 degrees F. Just curious. 14° Fahrenheit is often a pretty average temperature for fishing in the Colorado mountains in winter. It can get much colder than that. And frequently does. Also. What line are you using? I noticed some lines work better in cold than others. If yours is working real well at 14° Fahrenheit I would like to know what it is lol.

Well I saw that Andrew while fishing the main river was using a risen 9ft 8 weight 4 piece rod paired with a Lamson liquid looks like 7 weight. Looks like John’s has a euro nymphing setup so probably 10 foot rod I presume a 5wt. The reel is a sage ESN 2-5 wt.

Can't fish downstream in lower clear water, fish would spook. Especially when they're sitting in undercuts underneath the bank we were standing on. And leech jig streamers (for day 1)

Why are you bothering the fish, when the fish becomes a handkerchief, its skin becomes vulnerable to drops and parasites, this is 100% wrong 😡
