Nice hands free solution! But I'd be afraid of the gap that goes on belt coming out from my moving around, and then the whole thing flipping upside down and the camera falling to the ground. How about drilling two holes at the very end of the pipe where the gap is. Then, still put the gap over your belt, but now with the holes on the bottom side of the belt, thread a wire through the holes and give the wire a twist. A nut and bolt would do too but a wire is super quick to put in and remove.

This is genius. I was looking for a way to DIY a cheap monopod to hold a speedlight at the beach -- something I could just stick in the sand. The first part of your video gave me the perfect solution. Thanks so much!

That was an awesome video! The notch in the PVC pipe to fit on your belt is pure genius! I'm gonna try to build one withe the tripod center column. Thanks!

Griffin - Thanks, great stuff as usual. Tip for you - To get the PVC to cut perfectly straight with the PVC cutters, before actually cutting into the pipe, grab it in the cutters somewhat tightly and spin the cutters around the pipe while starting to cut and as you cut through it, keep even pressure and rotate until it is cut through. (years of experience with PVC)

Good question. I have the Giottos M7001 Ballhead, which is pretty heavy. I hear good things about the lighter weight Joby Ballhead X.

You could also use this as a boom pole. All you need to do is get a quarter twenty to cold shoe adapter and put it on the ball head and mount your mic to the cold shoe

I imagine suction cups made for cameras will be steadier than for phones. But here's an important question: what's the camera pointed at? If it's just the road, I think it'll always be shaky, because the car is literally shaking as it drives along. But if you point the camera at the car, or the car is a significant portion of the frame, it'll look more stable, because the car and camera move together.

Sure, I'll try to do that soon!

A couple people have suggested using that cheap ballhead as a gimble for a DIY steadicam, but I don't think it's smooth enough, offers enough rotation, or would be strong enough to support all that movement/weight.
@indymogul
@indymogul 11 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it seemed strongest with the bigger ballhead (Giottos M7001), and the additional weight wasn't uncomfortable.

You can get those mini tripods at wallmart, target, staples for around 6 bucks. The difference is that the ball head part is made out of aluminum so for a little more dough you can get that same ball head made out of something more sturdy. They come apart the same way so it's still probably the cheapest ball head you can get!

You notice at the end, I finally broke the $1 ballhead-too much stress as I ran around looking for sock puppets! But I ran my camera strap through the carabiner, so it couldn't fall. You'll also want to make sure the metal clip on the lanyard is strong enough not to fail.

Well i would actually use another PVC Pipe like the big one attached to the belt and use it to stabilize the lanyard/carabiner thingy, so it doesn´t go up and down while you shoot. It would stay on the same height all the time, and be adjustable like the lenght of the monopod thingy :D
