I like that you like tinker with these rigs. Every rig is going to make tired after three hours. Once you get a final design I would recommend painting the plastic black to make it look more professional.

I'm truly grateful to you for sharing your economical/creative/useful ideas. Like Donnie Bravo, I built a shoulder rig based on your original design. It's sturdy, and well-balanced. Take it off your shoulder and it sits easily on the floor or a table. I have a T2i that essentially lives on this rig. I understand the desire for an ever-smaller, more minimalistic rig--but I love the balance and stability of the earlier version. Improving on your original is going to be a real challenge.

From what I understand, the square "fig rig" puts the camera inside the rig in order to keep the center of balance... centered. Putting the camera on top does bring it to eye level, but now you're completely top heavy. In the center means the best stability and versatility for keeping steady while hand-held shooting. It's not the end-all design tho, as it all comes down to personal preference ;) Great ideas for people to try out!

shoulder rig. Definitely, I would consider to heat that piece of PVC and flatten it to contour my shoulder so it wouldn't start to dig it self a hole on me! and perhaps consider to use a leather bag with buck shut! so I can have true balance that is equitable with the weight of the camera! Perhaps different bags for different cameras! well that is just my humble opinion,

I used your idea with the ankle weight as a counter balance on a 2 handle shoulder rig and kinda refined mine to my needs and likes. Well 4 trades shows later I have worked out what works and what doesn't and I am now using my pvc rig as my #1 camera setup for all events that are run and gun. The counter balance rig allows me to shoot interviews all day without getting tired. I cleaned up the technique for mounting the weight too. I bought a 15mm cage with handles and 3/8th mounts and it looks bad ass but I never use it lol. The pvc rig is lighter and more comfortable. I'm using it at NAB today as a matter of fact. Thanks for the idea. All the rest of my pvc rigs are dead now. The shoulder counter balance rig is the field tested way to go for me!

I made a frugal rig for myself a year ago. I primarily made it to use with my camcorder because I had no place to mount LED lights and I wanted that option. Unlike the Frugal Rig made by the "Frugal Film maker" I made mine a bit larger to suit myself. My thoughts have been if I ever get the bug up my bum to make another Frugal Rig I would take a angled piece and actually make it so that mine rests on my shoulder. Essentially, I would take the part that comes to my shoulder and do another set of T connectors and on the lower part I'd add an angled connector and make it so instead of pressing against my shoulder it laid upon it. I don't believe the act of pressing the rig against you cuts the vibration as much as having the counterweight off the back of your shoulder does.

I've walked around for hours with mine and never get tired. I put in a chest brace and the right hand grab bar is close to my body also. I just updated it to add a shock mount.

tie that red weighed bag on the top end of the squared rig but extended over your shoulder so it would have an anchored balance…or maybe find you a arm sling/ yes, as if your broke your arm, that would definitely take the stress off of holding the rigs, plus it'll keep your arm beside you and stable at all times…just a thought

I just built my rig last night. I started with your original rig a few days ago, and liked it, but I felt it was going to fall off my shoulders, so, I modified it a bit. Okay, a lot. So, I took the handle, and kept it with two handles, but then I put a cross joint and a t joint on the top bar. The cross joint sports an adapter that supports the lens (thought it would decrease the chance of the lens sagging). Then, towards the body, I made a platform with a t-joint on one side to place the camera and a straight bar on the other side. Maybe I can add an adapter to place a spot for the H4N or lights, or battery pack, IDK. Anyway, so that part you can press against the body for added stability. Then, I took a 2 to 3 90 degree curved fitting (in the electrical department) and made an upside-down U that rests on my shoulder. I have it to where I can add weights to the back if I wanted to balance the rig with the camera. It comes apart into three pieces for travel purposes. More complicated, probably not practical, but it is my first attempt at DIY. Don't know how to post pics, but if you are interested, let me know.

I based my shoulder rig design on your original, but also switched to a single bar going back. Instead of using weights, i just flipped the back joint so it was facing down and used the "pull" to stabilize, seems much easier. I also switched to a single 90 elbow for each handle instead of the two 45s, if you are looking to go minimalist. .

Use your square, add one more length of pvc to the front and attach a foregrip under your new length. The feel you will get when you hold it is like a tommy gun with a camera on it. You can put your arm through the square and push against the back of your shoulder or push the assembly against the front of your shoulder. You can also always remove lengths of pvc to make the the rig shorter and better for small spaces that demand mobility. adding more T-joints at various lengths gives you the option to attach recorders and accessories. Hey knoptop, I was wondering if that DSLR rig from the Focus Buddy Version 2 video was still going to have a tutorial. That rig seems like a great filmmaking rig for DSLRs, and would be fun to add to your list of rigs.

Been there done that. Ultimately I mostly use a little L of PVC and the camcorder is on a T joint. So basically 3x T's, and 2x 4"-ish segments, and a plug that the camcorder rests on. Lets me set it on a table. Or brace it with the camcorder in hand, 2nd T touching forearm, and 3rd T in other hand. Frugal filmaker style camcorder T, except all 1" PVC, aka old man hands. Which has a lot of surface friction so nothing is ever glued. The end segment of a pipe is on the end of my monopod so I can slip part of the L on that for longer duration things.

First off..I love your videos. I just made the shoulder rig from your earlier videos. I do have a question tho. You may or may not run into this. You seem to be attaching and taking apart the pipe and adapters with low resistance. The PVC I get most of the time if I slide them together it's almost as strong as glue. Good luck getting them apart. Have you came across this and if so any way you mitigated it?
@steveman223
@steveman223 10 жыл бұрын
so I kind of answered my own question. I have been buying my PVC pipes at lowes which I think most of not all are glossy...the glossy ones are a PITA to check fit and make sure. once they go together they dont want to come apart. I doubt you would even need glue. Well I went to ace hardware ( a local hardware store) and they have white PVC that is more of a matte finish...and that stuff have some resistance but slides relatively easy in and out of the fittings. making it nice to check fit your work before gluing. so if you guys are going to build these awesome rigs then get the non glossy pvc. hope this helps people.
