Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're looking at the biggest differences between Book and Movie Ron Weasley. Ah, Ron Weasley. If you know him best from his character depiction in the Harry Potter book series, then the Ronald Weasley that you know and love is the courageous, quick-witted, and loyal best mate of Harry Potter. He’s also the youngest son, and sixth child of Molly and Arthur Weasley. And while some of that remains true for Ron’s character in the films, the majority of what’s consistent between the books and the movies is - rather surface level. I mean, yes, Ron is one of Harry’s bestest buds in the movies. And, yes, he remains the sixth son born to Mr. and Mrs. Weasley. But, other than these superficial details, there are many more character-defining qualities that were either changed substantially for the films, or omitted completely. In this video, I’ll be focusing on four of these major differences between book and film Ron.

@@barbiquearea His acting in the second movie was insane (Can we panic now?!😂). Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe are both great comedy actors. For me this started in the first movie when Ron gulped and squeaked at the prospect of going into the Forbidden Forest. I felt that director Chris Columbus decided to capitalize on that in the second movie (the same way Columbus overused the "Home Alone" scream throughout the first two films) and tried to replicate Ron's fear as comic instead of being true to the books. Subsequent directors just picked up on that error and perpetuated it.

You captured the changes great. Book Ron is a trusted friend. Movie Ron is a clueless buffoon. As you said, Ron grew up surrounded by wizards, witches, and magic. Hermione and Harry were muggles. Yet, in the films, it's Hermione that does all the explanations, not Ron, although in the books, it's Ron, as he is from a wizarding family. Physical changes can't be helped, as they were first hired as child actors. No one knew what each would grow up to be. However, I've always been disappointed that in such heavily CGI films, they never changed Daniel's blue eyes into Harry's green ones.

If you cared to noticed at the end of the philosopher’s stone Harry is crying but not for the reason you think the reason behind the crying is because Daniel had an allergic reaction to the contacts he Initially had in causing him severe pain and him crying. That why when casting Lily potter they looked for someone with blue eyes to match Daniel. On another note you have to understand that this film was in the early 2000s cgi wasn’t that big yet so a lot of the scenes you see like the letters flying out the chimney or any other scene it was done with practical effects rather than computer generated. As for your main subject of your rant the reason behind Ron Weasley not being as smart as he way is in the books well you can blame that on his actor Who flat out refused to read any of the books. He even admitted in interviews that he never read the books. So you can blame the actor and not the screen writers for that reason.

There was an interview/meeting with J.K. Rowling and the actual writer of all the movies, Steve Kloves, where he told Rowling that his favorite character was Hermione. She said Hermione was also her favorite, and this explains why she got many of the best lines and is a much better movie character than she was in the book and Ron got demoted to laughing stock. Ron's character should have had a lot more input in the movies because of his background, but oddly enough they made him less of a jerk than the books did.

The worst for me was the scene where Malfoy calls Hermione Mudblood. Ron goes ballistic, both because Malfoy has made an essentially racist remark, and because he's made it about Hermione, yes, he winds up belching slugs, but that is essentially an aside (a bit of gross commic relief), to what is a pretty nasty scene. Hermione herself is bewildered, but not offended in the same way Ron is, but the films made this a complete Hermione moment, just so she could get all upset and offended, and be comforted by Hagrid, while all Ron does is belch slugs and look gross. not only does this remove Ron's moment of awesome, but it also spoils one of the essential things Rowling was trying to do in the books, by showing that its not a simple black and white, all purebloods are bad, all muggleborn wizards are good dichotomy, but a situation with real people, some of whom are of course scumbags, but some of whom affirmably are not! A very important lesson to remember for the times we're living in where, attitudes about "prejudice", or "privilege", have become increasingly polarised.
@ronaldiosua
@ronaldiosua Жыл бұрын
Yeahh that would make way more sense. Hermoine getting so offended over being called mudblood just didn't feel right. I mean, she lived with non magics and she never really heard the word before so for her to go all ballistic about it was just over reacting imo. I always thought Ron should've been more angry and I guess that's why

Making Hermione perfect at the expense of Harry, and especially Ron was just a precursor to the misandry of modern Hollywood. its a shame, I really think Rupert Grint could've bought the more likable and courageous book version of Ron to life, and Heck, while she's more recently got onto the Hollywood man hating band wagon, Emma Watson might have even been able to do a good job with the more rounded book Hermione (she's certainly snooty enough). A shame both that the films didn't get this right, and that this trend of making the male cast look stupid to make the female cast look perfect caught on so much in Modern cinema.

This taking away of Ron Weasley's intelligence, knowledge, and bravery and bestowing them on Hermione may be a rather heavy-handed attempt at feminism, i.e., countering what might have been seen as a portrayal of females as weak, hysterical, and always needing a male's support.
@Karol-ei1fc
@Karol-ei1fc 2 жыл бұрын
I think Hermione was often hysterical and needs man support (in form of Ron and Harry). Often she was very emotional and cried a lot. She was so gifted and intelligent that she could defend herself, but lots of times she needed emotional support from Ron and (especially) Harry. The perfect example for talent, bravery and a girl that can take care of herself is ginny. She was very talented, brave, naughty and a rational non-hysterical.

Rupert Grint have freckles in his arms, his back and face too, but the makeup cover it. I have a lot of pics of him without makeup, and i can confirm it, he has freckles. His nose is also long in a lot of pictures, it depends on the angle. The only thing he doesn't have is the blue eyes and the tallness. It's easy to presume Ron's apparence from illustrated books made by a point of view of the illustrator of it, but have you seen the original sketches made by J.K R*wling when she was producing the books? Is much more like Rupert. But the main thing that was changed in Ron from the movies was his personality because of the screenplay. Also, If you watch the deleted scenes there's so much of book!ron in it. Rupert Grint is the perfect Ron Weasley in many ways, but the directors and screenwriters just decided to shadow all his potential and tried to make him a comic relief just because of his "funny face". (watch the blu-rays interviews, you'll see chris columbus talking about it). Rups did his best. This man needs to get more recognized.

There is a well-known interview with Rowling & The Scriptwriter, where they talk about the fact that the Scriptwriter's favorite character in the series is Hermione... They sit there laughing about it, which is why they took everything that made Ron great in the Book and gave it to Hermione and removed all of her problems. Additionally the fact that we can't hear Harry's internal dialogue he's also been 'airbrushed', since most of his snark & smarm comes from internal dialogue since we're in his head, and we don't get that here.

Luckily these wonderful film adaptations came out when they did, otherwise current Hollywood naming / casting conventions would have replaced every instance of "Harry Potter" with "Hermione Granger" in the movie titles. Additional changes would be thus: Harry - an angry Goth - would simp for Aunt Petunia and have an angry, unrequited crush on Dudley. Ron would have a pronounced stutter, an 18-inch blue mohawk, be confined to a wheelchair and come from a large blended pureblood family. His parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Weasley own a combination BnB / Health food shoppe in Diagon Alley and for 50 galleons a week, they let Xenophilius Lovegood secretly sell Wizard-Hemp from a small back room. Hagrid is openly transitioning to Olympe Maxime. All of the House Elves are actually Squibs who identify as Furries. The basic premise: On Wednesday, 31 October 1981, after breaking into Lilly's home, Voldemort easily killed Lilly's Baby-Daddy, who had been cowering in the corner all day crying because Lilly had scolded him about not properly drying and storing her new spalted-Hornbeam Charcuterie Board. Lilly -- who had been showering - immediately leapt from the bathroom having only time to clad herself in a Quilted Flannel Invisibility Jacket and an old comfy pair of her late birth person's Doc Martens. Her wand was still absentmindedly stirring several ounces of pumpkin spice into a pitcher of iced-Vodka on the bathroom sink. The duo met at the threshold of Baby Harry’s nursery door. Her eyes locked with those of the Dark Lord and she saw that he was suddenly AFRAID. A grueling 45-minute combination wand-dual / epic martial arts battle ensued and using trickery, copious amounts of mansplaining and the occasional successful Levicorpus spell, Lord Voldemort managed to achieve a series of lucky shots with an enchanted SPAS-12 loaded with special 00 Dragon Heartstrings shells. He murdered Lilly Evans that night. He preceded through the nursery doorway and just as he reared up to his full height of 4-foot 8 and unleashed the killing curse upon baby Harry, two-year old Hermione Granger leapt in between them and using her binkie and two-newly formed buck teeth as pseudo-fulcrums, snapped-kicked the curse back into Lord Voldemort’s face, destroying his physical body immediately. Her secret shame was that she arrived too late to save Harry's strong, independent mother.

After the Prisoner of Azkaban, Ronald Weasley became little more than a prop. I thought that the only reason he wasn't killed off in the movies was because he was a central character in the books. I also thought that the writers and directors were trying to get into Emma Watson's pants so they gave her the best lines and roles.

Sorry to reply late to this because I'm just listening to the podcast right now. I will be honest I didn't like reading in my teen years so I only watched the movies until I just read the books about 2 years ago. I wish that I did it the other way around because it's so hard to see anyone but the movie version of Ron even when reading the books. I was always confused why a good amount of people said that Ron was their favorite character because to me he was just very whiney. Now that you've explained the differences from the two Ron's, I'm going to try to wipe my memory of what I know about him and start fresh to see about this better Ron. Thanks for pointing this out. I agree that it would have made more sense to give more lines about the wizarding world back to Ron. He gets a couple, but even then, Hermione outshines him in some detail. About the freckles, maybe the reason they didn't add them was for continuity. These days there are far too many sharp-eyed fans out there who'd no doubt notice that Ron's freckles move over the course of a scene/film/the series! Some things you just have to let slide

I agree 100 %. I am a movie watcher before books reader, so by the movies alone I had the impression that Ron is stupid, coward and useless. When I got the 7 books as a gift and I started to read, I was shocked to find out how much this is not true. The movies were just spitting on Ron's character which is awful. And about his appearance, they couldn't do anything about the tall and lengthy, but they could have created freckles for him in computer. And if we are talking about how a character should look like, the actor who plays Arthur Weasley is a big guy, while Arthur is described in the book as tall and slim. What is it with these movie creators? Like keeping Ralph Feins original eye color, instead of giving him Red eyes in computer. The actors who played the characters were phenomenal but bringing them from books to movies was not. Am I right?

I watched the movies before reading the books too, and although I liked Ron a lot, I got the impression of him being more of a comedic relief character rather than an actual strong member of the trio. When I read the books however, I was just completely shocked to see he was such a fleshed out character, with so much compassion, kindness, bravery, intelligence (streetsmartness, people-smart) and humor. Sure, Ron may not have been as heroic as Harry, or as book smart as Hermione, but he was his own thing and represented so many good qualities. He and his family were all so welcoming to Harry, and willing to defend anyone who was being bullied/mistreated. I love his character so much because I think he represents what a good friend should be like. Loyal and compassionate, but also flawed because after all he was human too. I'm so bummed the movies did him so dirty. Rupert Grint was FANTASTIC as Ron imo, he definitely liked the character he was playing and with his skills they could have portrayed Ron so much better! Also, his flaws made a lot more sense in the books too, as it was shown way more how he was always overshadowed by someone, whether it be Harry or his own siblings, and it was only natural he'd feel some jealousy once in a while, but never want bad things to happen to the people overshadowing him.

@@yomommasofatthanoshadtosna3479 Right exactly. You are correct, and I love book Ron from the same reasons. I love watching the movies again from time to time, but when it comes to give the characters justice- Screw them! And it's not the fault of Rupert, Emma, Daniel non of the actors. The actors just do what they are told and payed for. Hack I would say even that Ron is much less funny in the books. Sure he can laugh, but the real jokers are the twins not him. Making him stupid was especially insulting to my eyes. And a coward also so terrible. And I get it, they had to cut some of the book when adapting to the big screen. But what they kept should have been done correctly, and it mostly didn't. Also if something enraged me in HBP movie- No "Battle Of The Astronomy Tower." Which was the most important in the book, and one of the most important at all.

HP fanfiction writers usually exaggerate the negative traits* of movie!Ron, so in most fanfics Ron is either tagging after Harry for his money/fame or not a close friend of Harry's. TV Tropes has "Ron the Death Eater" for when heroic canon characters are villianous in fanfiction. It isn't USUALLY literal. *Stupidity, poor aptitude at magic, laziness, gluttony, jealousy, disloyalty, blood supremency, tactlessness Meanwhile, Hermione often has her canon personality, but sometimes is portrayed positively or negatively. Harry is a blank slate in fanfics.

Agreed. The movie version of Ron is kind of a buffoon. And, since they gave most of his lines to Hermione, they could just as easily had Ron deliver them. It's different than when they took some of Dobby's storylines and gave them to Neville. Yes, it made Dobby less than important to HP. Some movie only fans may wonder why Harry was so upset about Dobby's death. But, since so much of Neville's storyline was removed in the movies, it gave us a look at his character gaining confidence. In other words, there was good purpose with the Neville-Dobby exchange. I don't get the Ron-Hermione exchange.

It seems like the movies made Ron less brave and more goofy in order to obtain an easier, lazier level of comic relief, and highlight Harry's and Hermione's qualities even more... This, paired with the fact that they changed their relationships too, as you cleverly point out in this video, leads me to theorize that writers, directors and other professionals involved in making the movies believed that Harry and Hermione would end up together, so they thought they would build up to that in terms of characters and relationships depictions.

Another difference that anoyed me is that in the 5th book Ron becomes a prefect, and has his moment of glory because of it (he recives a new broom) and his mom shows that she is very proud....in the movie? Nothing, they don't even mention it, and as usual Ron is depicted as a goof.

I agree totally on all of the points made about Ron. I like Rupert Grint as an actor, but the butchering of Ron’s character makes me angry. There is only one point in this video I disagree with: Harry is not portrayed as smarter than he is, in the films. On the contrary, he often is made to appear more clueless than he actually is. In terms of academics, he and Ron have around a B average, I’d say. They don’t do poorly in most subjects, except for Potions and History of Magic. And that is because they have bad professors and/or don’t care about the subjects.

I agree! Movie Ron is a poor choice for Griffendor with his cowardice, ignorance and idiocy. In the films, it’s a mystery why Ron would be a real friend to Harry, let alone a mate for Hermione. The funny sidekick meme went way too far in the movie, so far it undermined the entire story. For the movie version, it seemed to me that Harry was drawn to Ron’s family rather than to Ron himself. And the handling of the supposed romance between Ron and Hermione was one of the worst-written plot arcs of all.
