Күн бұрын

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're tackling The Harry Potter films VS the Harry Potter books. Now- I was first exposed to the books, they were the first thing that I knew of Harry Potter- and I think that the general consensus among Harry Potter fans is that the books are superior- mainly because they have so much more detail- they’re the original story. The films, on the other hand, took some liberties- some characters looked and even acted differently, plot points were omitted, and overall- they were just much more condensed. But, what did you expect? 6 hour long movies? I LOVE the Harry Potter films- I think they’re great, and while the books did a lot of things better, and are-in my opinion-superior, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t things that the FILMS did better than the books. In today’s video, I’m going to be touching on 20 things that I FEEL the films did better than the books. For the die hard book fans, try to watch this one with an open mind. This is going to be a mix of longer and shorter points, ranging from single lines/moments that were included/excluded- all the way to major shifts in the way that the films turned out. Without further ado, let’s get started...

I feel like the moment in Prisoner of Azkaban where Severus stands in front of Harry and Hermione protecting them from Remus when he transforms into a werewolf really helps as a subtle indicator of his alliance and intentions. * Book Harry has a bit of an attitude problem and even comes off as being snarky. He’s definitely not afraid to speak his mind even when he shouldn’t which often lands him into trouble. Film Harry may lose his temper every now and then but at least he has the common sense to keep his mouth shut * Sirius giving Harry the photo for the original Order of the Phoenix rather than Moody. This is much more meaningful and cathartic to both Harry and Sirius whereas Moody kind of comes off as being forced. I mean I get why he gave Harry the photo but he also isn’t that comfortable around his considering he spent almost a year with an imposter

I unyieldingly hate the burning of The Burrow scene. It’s gratuitous and irrelevant to the plot, disregards the magical protections put on The Burrow, takes time away from exploring more important story elements from the book that get cut for the film, and is generally just a weirdly shot mess that feels totally out of place. It’s literally my least favorite scene in the entire franchise.

Right up there with Voldy Flakes. Voldy Flakes defeats one of the main points of the series. At the end of the day Voldemort was just a mortal man like everybody else. His death having a mundane finality was significant in itself. Him disintegrating with no one to see it but Harry makes no sense.

I thought the weird rooms and consequences of going into them was weird and goofy and didn’t fit in with the feel of the task at hand but in the movie they made it so much more powerful. I also really love Neville’s empowerment and confidence in the movie that the books made so much more sad and depressing for him. Pretty good video! A couple of years ago I decided it would be more fun to watch for things done well, as it got too depressing to complain all the time about errors and omissions. Fake Moody's lines about how to sort out liars claiming to have been under the Imperius Curse in GoF was great, but too bad they forgot about it when they fogged Krum's eyes later in the maze scene. Also loved how Snape diverted McGonagall's spells at the Carrows and picked up their wands before jumping out the window.

It is not much I think the movies did better than the books. One thing I do prefer the movie version of is Sirius Black. Although it's not the "nice one, James" scene, which you commented on, that's better (I prefer a Sirius that loves Harry for who he is, not wanting him to fill the whole after his father), but the overall change in his attitude. In OoP book he was often rude and immature. For example, where the movie had him comforting Harry by saying "you're not a bad person, you're a very good person that bad things has happened to", the book Sirius just tells him to go to sleep, and the part where book Sirius thinks Harry's being left alone on Privet Drive all summer is nothing compared to his own suffering, being forced to hide from the ministry, is in the movie replaced with a scene with hugs and smiles. The movie version made him much more likeable. And I agree that it was nice to see some scenes from the battle of Hogwarts where Harry wasn't present. That was a good edition imo. Some of the examples you made are far away from my own opinion though. Most of all the thing about Hermione using "Obliviate". That is an *irreversable* spell, meaning she would never be reunited with her parents again. Why on Earth would a smart girl as Hermione do something as foolish as that?! In the books, she simply replaces the parents memories of her with false memories, a spell she can reverse herself, so she plans from the start to go to Australia and lift the spell as soon as Voldemort is dead (she even explicitly says so herself). I do like that we get to see the scene, not only hear it mentioned later, but I see no reason for them to switch the spell to something this destructive without explaining why she apparently doesn't want to see her parents ever again ...

Good video. I agree on most of the points. Here is what I disagree: 1.The burning of the burrow was not a positive edition, it was disposal and had no meaning. Instead this bullshit, I would be happy if they gave us the "Battle Of The Astronomy Tower" who was one of the most important battles in the books. 2.Hermiony using the Obliviate is bad. Because Obliviate meant to erase bad memories. What about the happy ones? Also you can't reverse this spell, and I think she would choose something reversal. 3.Three of the four directors did a good job. Mike Newell didn't do a good job according to Morgan Ross (Movie Flame) he explains why, and why he didn't like the GOF movie in general and his reasons make sense, you are welcome to check it out. I love the GOF movie, but after I was reading the book I understood just how terrible it was adapted to screen. 4.Battle Of Hogwarts looked great on screen but it was too little. Three battles I would have loved to see on screen: Remus John Lupin vs. Antonin Dolohov Nymphadora Tonks vs. Bellatrix Lestrange and Filius Flitwick vs. Antonin Dolohov all of these were essential to kept in. And about Severus vs. Minerva it was cool in the movie, but made Snape look like he is nothing compared to Minerva which was not the case in the book. In the book the fight was longer and harder, Snape was a fighting beast.
@Swearengen1980
@Swearengen1980 2 жыл бұрын
IMO, without seeing Ross' points on GOF, I'll just say that it's hands down the worst of the movies. Not that it's bad, I still love it, but it's definitely not on par with the rest. Definitely agree with the fights you pointed out. I watched the movies many times long before I ever touched the books, so it was frustrating to just see Lupin and (I'm adding in) Fred die with zero screen time. Tonks was fairly insignificant in the movies, so I didn't care, but we were invested with Lupin and Fred.

Possibly a misleading title considering that not all 20 are direct comparisons between the books and movies where the "books bombed" (casting for example - as stated in the video, there's no casting for books). It's hard to disagree with any of these except the Quidditch omission (although I'm sure the actors/actresses would totally agree with its omission - Dan and Rupert have said filming the broom scenes was uncomfortable and Emma said that the contraption they had to sit on with uncomfortable even for the girls). I found it disappointing that we had Quidditch in 1 & 2, it disappeared in 3 (when Harry won the Quidditch Cup), 5, and only returned in 6 when Harry was Quidditch Captain. I'd make one point on S.P.E.W: I agree that the omission in the movie was probably a good thing. But it was an important part of the book. Others interpret the message of house-elves and S.P.E.W differently to me, but I interpret it as you can't take YOUR cultural values and impose them on individuals with differing cultural values without consulting them and trying to see their point of view (which is what Hermione essentially did - she took her "human" cultural values and imposed them on house-elves and when the elves got offended, she took to knitting hats and covering them up to deceive them). So I think it had an important message in the books, but it was indeed a good omission from the films. Final point on Hermione's obliviate, I get chills down my spine every time I watch that scene and she says "Obliviate". The only thing that could have improved that scene is if Hermione reached up with her hand and wiped a tear away as she was watching herself disappear from the photos. The part of the scene just before it where Hermione's mother calls her for dinner and she says "coming mum!" and her voice breaks is excellently done as well. Being an only child myself, I can only imagine how hard that would be for Hermione to effectively make herself an orphan by removing herself from her parents' lives to keep them safe.

I thought the casting was excellent but was a little sorry that Daniel Radcliffe aged so quickly (not that it could be helped). Playing an eleven-year-old, Harry's voice was changing by the end of the first film, and by the second film Harry appeared more 14 than 12. By the third film it didn't seem to matter as much.

I’ve always wanted to know about “obliviate” why Gilderoy Lockhart was emphasized to be gifted in it. Is it a particularly difficult spell? Is that why Hermione only did that spell too?
@stormmaster108
@stormmaster108 2 жыл бұрын
Well, first of all, Hermione used a different memory spell that only alters memory and can be reverted. She actually mentions later in the book that she had never used Obliviate, when they are discussing what to do with death eaters. Though there is no scene with Hermione's parents in the book (instead she only mentions it). In the film the scene is shown and very well done, but the spell aspect was simplified, for easier understanding I suppose. Obliviate is, if I recall correctly, a very difficult and dangerous spell. Lockhart being gifted with memory curses is emphasized, because he is very incompetent with magic in general and can rarely (if ever) use it properly, achieving the result that he is trying to achieve. His memory curses on the other hand are quite successful and efficient.

I have to somewhat disagree about Dobby simply because he was cut from so many of the films. In the books he appears in every one except one and three, so we as readers and of course Harry and company have the chance to see him and develop a relationship with him, so that when he's finally killed in Deathly Hallows you've actually come to feel something for his character and you'd understand why he was even there. I will agree that the words he spoke were indeed more impactful in the movie, but again, because he'd been eliminated from all the prior films after his initial appearance, his later death almost seems less moving.

There is not much to think about in terms of spells after hearing "Avada...". Even if Harry didnt know which spell Lucius wanted to use, just going to dumbledore and saying "Hey, so that malfoy guy wanted to use a spell on me but the house-elf i just freed from him safed me" "Oh really Harry? To be fair. Considering the limitations in terms of time we could not really have asked for much better. Its impossible for movies to do justice to the books if you have group you are aiming it at, in this case kids and teenagers especially. I read hundreds up to thousands of fantasy books in my life, aswell as i watched alot of their movie adaptaions. Harry Potter till this day stands as one of the best movie adaptaions. If you wanna make it better than that you basically have to go the way Riot games did with Arcane and make it a series (preferably animated as its gonna be very hard to make someone look 12 years old who was 10-11 when you shot the first season (year). He is gonna be 15 by that point and you need a new actor basically until the last 2-3 books where you can deage someone with makeup etc enough to make him look like that age.)

@zokora3656
@zokora3656 2 жыл бұрын
@@ashleyalexander2847 yeah. now lets think about the amount of money all of that wouldve cost. Not even talking about the time they wouldve need in addition filming the scenes. 2-part movies = double the cost. Especially when you made the first and second movie you dont know how good it will resonate with the audience. They also have a set budget for the movies anyways. Obviously they have to water down some of the relationships etc. Especially Malfoy. He was very vital to the books, but bringing his feud with Harry into every movie, fleshing it out etc is to much to ask especially looking at how meaningless his role is in the first 5 movies concerning the MAIN plot, which is what movies normally focus on. Over all if id have to give HP movies a score based on how close they are to the books compared to other adaptations i watched its a real solid 8/10. As a standalone movie production over the course of 8 movies its a 9/10. Stop setting your expectations for movie adaptations so high. It will spoil nearly any movie for you. Think about the difficulties they would have to face following a book to a tee.

It's a great video and I can certtainly agree to (almost) all points you made. But I would like to mention one thing: I don't think the video title is fitting. Half of the points you made are what the movies did GOOD, not what the movies did BETTER than the books. For a few points you mentioned that, but also in many points where you did not mention it, I felt that way. For example the battle of Hogwarts or Hermione obvliviating her parents: the books are (except the scenes at the start of some books) completely out of Harry's perspective. So the books COULDN'T include Hermione obvliviating her parents or more scenes from the battle of Hogwarts, because then it would have been from another perspective than Harry's. Another thing is the duel between Dumbledore and Voldemort. Of course it can be done better on screen, but then I don't understand why the book would have done a bad job at that. Additionally, I think that #9 (Re-watchability) is a bit unnecessary as it is not something that the movies did especially good. It's just because of the medium. I personally like that I can read (or hear) a part of the books each day, but that is my personal opinion. I can certainly empathize your point of being able to watch the whole thing in one evening, but that is not something that the movies did great. It's just because they ARE movies. That point is also something far more personal than the other points and in my opinion unnecessary for the video. That said, I don't disagree with your points and the movies certainly did many things good but that does not mean that the books did these things bad. In a few points this video is about things the movies did BETTER than the books and I also agree on those, but I think a title like "20 Times the Movies did Things Great" would have been fitting better as for many points the book also did good or could not have done better because of the medium.

Sorry. I have to disagree with several suggestions. Burning of the Burrow - This is a completely silly addition and makes no sense. The Burrow is totally protected from magic because of the huge # of safeguards on it. IF Harry was that easily accessed, then Voldemort would have shown up...and we'd have a sad ending. While I must admit, Harry speech in the Great Hall to Snape was nice, and the fact that Snape deflected two spells into the Carrows, effectively defeating them (which is pretty cool), it's at the expense of Harry's chivarly, his actions, and McGonagall as well, actually. Not sure if 3 seconds of cool is a great trade off. Hermione certainly would NOT obliviate her parents. Unless she thinks everyone is doomed, she's going to die, and Harry will certainly fail. She altered memories, which she plans on undoing later. Book showdown was better. It was a GOOD showdown on screen, but way more happens in the book. Battle of Hogwarts. - nice scope, but where are the Centaurs, the House Elves at the end? Why reveal Harry being alive so soon? The IMPACT of George dying in tne middle of the core group was lost in the movies. The fact that Harry sneaks off from everyone, and only talks to Neville, to go die...is also lost to a large degree. And finally, the fight of Harry vs Voldemort...completely ridiculous. Once the robes had Harry in their grasp, Voldemort would have killed Harry. Game over. And the fact that spells bounce off shield spells from Harry.. or just missed because he sacrifices himself for everyone...not present. Two things the Film did better not mentioned were; Sirius' talk with Harry about being a good person that bad things had happened to, as well as not being so sulky/distant Luna yelling down Harry on the stairs to direct him to talk to a dead person (yes, Harry figures this out himself, but it is hard to show internal monolog.. and it reminds us Luna is quirky, but a strong person.

Our own creative brain cannot beat CGI effects? Yes CGI is great but expensive and can diminish scenes. Not to mention it can create plot holes not present in the source material. Taking Voldy vs Dumbley in the ministry: Where are the statues blocking the Avada Kedavra? Its supposed to be unblockable but Dumbley can just lock spells and do a tug of war like it is in the Dragonball universe? After that it was established in Goblet that the connection Harry and Voldy's wand made was unique and very rare. See what i mean? If they had just one statue it would be fine too. Voldy fires one Avada>> statue blocks >> Voldy does not use Avada anymore for the duel problem solved and no unintentional plot hole. Another example: The army of the dead from LOTR. My imagined army was better then the one we got in the theatrical release, the extended edition does improve that sequence alot but thats not the version most people have seen so it does not count.
