Congratulations Brian! The emphasis in randori is brilliant! We did much randori in my judo training years. A simple set was each partner got to throw a partner a given number of times, then it was the partner's turn. Great workout. Well presented Che! Cheers, Terry.

We used to do something similar in Aikido! Similar to the 100 randori in karate, we would have 100 throws. One throw, 100 times. Exhausting, but after a while, there is a kind of moving meditation that takes over, a beautiful sense of flow. Thank you for always taking the time to watch and comment, Sensei Terry, and for sharing so much of your incredible martial arts knowledge 🙇

Yet another gem from GRKC! Congratulations Brian! No doubt well deserved and hard won. Love the use of gedan barai as an arm entanglement. So much is lost when sports karate jettisons sandangi, tuite, kakie and randori... equivalent to gelding the stallion. Kudos for keeping these alive and making them so accessible. If anyone is interested, my friend/senpai Cameron Quinn (long time uchi deshi to Sosai Mas Oyama and Oyama's translator on international trips ) has a pod cast on his Kyokushin KZbin channel which explores the depths of uke waza. Its titled "A block is a lock is a blow is a throw." Arigatou to the whole team.

Will definitely check out his podcast and channel, Sensei - thank you for the recommendation. Can't ask for higher credentials than surviving as Sensei Oyama's deshi! I think Brian will be able to relate 😆 I had to look up tuite as a term, but is definitely something we practice! It is scattered throughout our bunkai videos, but I do think it is time to do a video dedicated to the hidden locks in Goju Ryu - much fodder to think about! Sport karate is the McDonalds of karate - technically it's food, but you can't live on it. It makes a nice snack for those who are interested, but it is possible to go your whole life without it :)

These are great drills to bring the practicality of the kata to life. By extracting the fighting principles from the kata and practicing it as a flow-drill exercise, students are better able to understand how the kata can be applied. On this basis, these drills should be applied to all katas.

It is a challenging exercise to put all the kata through this drill, but it provides enough training material for a long, long time to get it right. There just aren't enough years to get through all of it, learn it, and master it. Thank you so much for commenting, Sensei John!
