Neck pain is a common problem that can be caused by a variety of factors. The four most common causes of neck pain are:
Stress on neck muscles by continuous bend position during work. This can happen if you work at a desk and you have to look down at a computer screen for long periods of time.
Spasms in muscles by sleeping in awkward position. This can happen if you sleep with your head turned to one side or if you sleep with your neck in a flexed or extended position.
Cervical spine joint arthritis. This is a condition that causes inflammation and pain in the joints of the neck.
Cervical Disc protrusion. This is a condition that occurs when the soft disc between two vertebrae in the neck bulges out.
If you are experiencing neck pain, there are a few things you can do to relieve the pain. These include:
Resting your neck. Avoid activities that aggravate the pain, such as looking down at a computer screen or sleeping in an awkward position.
Applying heat or cold to the affected area. Heat can help relax the muscles and cold can help reduce inflammation.
Taking over-the-counter pain medication. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) can help relieve pain and inflammation.
Stretching your neck muscles. There are a number of stretches that you can do to help relieve neck pain.
Seeing a doctor. If your neck pain is severe or does not improve with home treatment, you should see a doctor.
