Here's an idea for a Saab debate... I personally feel that Saab missed a prime opportunity to basically market themselves like Subaru did with their rally sport competition. Saab had many years, decades even, of competitive rally sport. Yet by the mid to late 80's they stopped ( I'm not sure why ). Yet Subaru built their brand on the back of Rallying and became known as a cool, tough, rugged performance machine. Saab should have went down this route under GM ownership, and boosted their appeal. They could have done this AND promoted their eco friendly technology at the same time. Sales would have been much higher and Saab may even still be around today. They didn't and a wasted opportunity.

I must be an absolute madman. I've sunk so much into both my '02 9-5 Linear 2.3t Sportcombi, and '06 9-3 Aero 2.8t sedan. But it's worth it. It's worth coming outside, seeing my two black beauties parked nose to nose, and hearing that familier "bong bong bong" when I put the key in. It's worth the engine noise, the turbo woosh (open air intake!), And the feeling of rowing through the gears, watching that needle poke into the red. I've gotten compliments on both cars, and I beam with pride. I've walked on a V8, and a few imports, and it's fun to see them look a little shocked over a black sedan from Sweden pulling in them. I love looking at my wheel, and seeing that blue badge. The green glow of the gauges is relaxing, and those seats. Best. Seats. Ever! Don't even get me started in the stereos.

The immense sadness that comes with a new Saab never seeing the light of day is number 1 on my list. Saab is a part of my existential and emotional infrastructure. I was always an outsider as a kid just as Saab was the ultimate outsider in the automotive world so we bonded and I was completely soaked up by the Saab feeling when I was around 8 years old. My head turns for every Saab I get to see on the roads. Really like the 9-3 estates. One issue that bugs me, The terrible stereo if you get a commonly buggy stereo in a 2003-2006 Saab 9-3. I'm considering putting a head unit in the CD spot. My head unit seems to be a bigger problem than the common amp1 issues.

Just get some new speakers, if that's the least of your worries then try driving a 2006 5$eries and have fluid leaking everywhere and tubes made out of rubber hoses that you wouldn't even trust on gardening hose.
@kyleb20444 жыл бұрын
The common issue is the car has multiple amplifiers connected by fiber optic. One amp in particular is underneath the driver seat unsealed where water and grime can get in. When the connection is bad (common) or an amp dies, all Audio cuts out. In my car, I'm pretty sure it was actually the head unit that went bad. It would get stuck blasting noise, couldn't turn off the stereo and it would even stay on after you turned the car off. Have to pull a fuse or battery. Engine blew up on my car last year, the Saab has been sitting in my garage for a year now :(

Came from Mazda too, switched about 15 years ago. From all rear wheel driven Mazda s, even modified and rally cars and last the frontwheeldrive 626. Fought rust but reliability was king, models were getting more and more boring and grey. Then my girlfriend bought Saab 90, a car with a odd identity. Then I changed my daily driver from the 626 to a 900cc, even bought a astonishing campertop to it. But with offspring coming in 2008 we both bought a more roomy, usefull and reliable good-looking safe and comfy 9000 for a bargain and redone it to next to new state, we now still have them with lots of miles added, mine instead to my wife's car is a simple non turbo 2 liter bi fuel, at about 350k miles now. Of course they are in need of proper maintenance now and then which is become difficult as is got disabled in a working accident 8 years ago. Vacation to Sweden and loooong hobby trips , big hauling carriers all had to make place for short distances to health services carrying a wheelchair in the trunk or standing on the backseat. Still think there is no better Saab ever made, reliability is almost as good as Japanese cars if those days but still offering safety, comfort and looks after 24 years on a well protected next to rust free high quality built a spec car. Still drives like new, hope I can drive it for lots of years in future, need nothing more!

Having had a 99 9-5 Aero in the EU I can say: 1-Maintenance is cheap, body parts and mechanical parts are insanely expensive. 2-The eletrics on mine were realiable but not the turbo, the throttlebody or engine mounts. 3-It handles like a suv, doesn't like to corner fast, but on the worst weather still driving like any sunny day. 4-The obd-2 doesn't like to talk to any device 5-The seats in the '99 model doesn't hold you but are the most confortable ones ever.

I hardly see Saab's anymore especially where I live (NYC) however, I visit my best friend out in Portland Maine often and you see a ton of well cared for Saab 9-3's out there. I did a count and average about 13-15 different Saabs everytime I go there. I hear that they love the Saab's out there so some of your viewers may want to check out the classifieds for any Saab's being sold. May also be a good place to check out parts from the junk yard too since some parts are getting harder to find.

I hear ya. Driven SAAB for 28 yrs of my 36 years driving experience. Love the cars, love the brand but had to set emotions aside when I bought a new PHEV. I did have a bit of a tear jerker moment when I was leaving the dealership with my new car. Mechanic came running up to telling me my 08 93SC wouldn't start. Went over to my car and sure enough he couldn't start it. I reached over turned the key and it started for me like it always did. We both looked at each other like WTF? was that all about. I just saw my old 08 is up for sale and am sooooo tempted to buy it back.

Only downside to Saab that I’ve figured out so far is that it’s no longer an active business producing more amazing Saabs. When you started crying I really felt that - cried a few times thinking about this car and the brand and it’s history and only just now got my hands on one. Gotta just do our best to at least take great care of the Saabs that we can take care of.

Love your channel I've loved saab for most of my life (think mid eighties) If your poor and just barely have enough money for a car don't buy a saab. unless your a amateur mechanic and you live near a big city. Also you have to calculate how long you'll own the car. I agree that if like you, someone will invest many years of ownership, then the costs pretty much even things out. But I think there's a huge number of people who are complete car novices who are sold used Saabs (or any used luxury car), that don't really understand maintenance will be Costlier, harder to come by (in more ruralareas), the resale value is also pretty low with all luxury cars with a lot of complex issues. So my only sort of critique is that many people who end up purchasing a used saab for 2,3,4,5 thousand dollar Saabs and think to themselves I'll have a luxury car for 2 or 3 years and then ill upgrade, don''t understand that the maintenance will be probably be double or triple than that of say a ford in that 2-3 year span. So if a cash strapped person asks are Saabs reliable? It's probably best to steer them towards a toyota Thanks for the cool content

I agree,ive had 6 Saabs and have driven over a million miles in them combined, I always sold to upgrade and put 320k on one and 279k on another before I sold them, working on Porsche 911s and 944s made it easy to work on the 3 engine platforms, the Classic and OG 2.0t and the NG 2004 up 2.0t. I think I've spent maybe 2 grand on all 6 tops on parts. I live out east on Long Island in the Hamptons, and there are over 1,000 Saabs here, some going back to 86 with low miles, they only get driven "IF" the family comes out for the summer, and if they do its 2-3 months, or they get garaged, So you find all these amazing Saabs, that have been maintained flawlessly, and almost so cheap its a gift, I would say Its the most driven car in Easthampton besides the 911. because we have so many, there's one junkyard that only has Euro cars, and around 40 900-9-3s, The problems happen when you let youre local mechanic work on them or yourself without a knowledge-base, I've never worked on an engine that is so accessible, and that one mistake can lead you down a road of throwing cash at a car you didn't have to in the 1st place. My 1st car as a kid in 1986 was an 82 BMW 323i E21, my dad got a 86 560 SEL, and I did all the work on that car and it got me through college and was running like gold in still in 94. then also in 86, my mom got a 1986 SAAB 900 Turbo Convertible, and I was hooked...

Parts are still easy to find, also if you want new parts, for nearly all models. And there is still adequate aftermarket supply as well for reasonable prices. Have had a saab 9-5 04 2,3t and a 9-3 01 2,0t. i would say the biggest downside is that the headlights gets foggy, thats a common fail on the yearly check in sweden, but pretty easy to fix! Also that turbo breaks down after 24 000-30 000 km, (dont know what that translates too in your miles) and that is pretty expensive when the car has gone that far. But as you say, it aint easy to find downsides, my old 9-5 has now gone 39 000 km and it was a rental when it was new, my 9-3 has gone 29 000 km. If you change the oil and filter every 1000 km and the turbo when it breaks down they last for ever. Thank you for your movies!!! :D
