The 10 kg ceramic wool ingot is my favorite ( personally) for overall look. I was sold with the title of the video (because you never let us down) but then to see it was the ingot olympics..... Oh HELL YEAH!! This was yet another awesome video. Little Ingot seemed happy that you were melting more. 😅 I loved everything about this video, bro... Smooth pours ( even though there were bubbles, the fluidity with which you pour is key and always a good sign when you get it consistent like that ... The bubbles are from something else.. Point being that you are good at getting the smooth and steady pour) , multiple melts and ingots with ALL the forges getting fired up 😱😍 , Ingot the unofficial (or official, thats up to you really [😆]), you ran the numbers on the gas and all that (though I think i may have missed which one was the ultimate winner... Doesn't really matter much anyways... We all win from it) , and you made those ingots some nice little pieces for the wall. All in all... 20 stars. . . 5 stars on each of them bad babies that melted the $#¡t outta that copper. Much love to you and yours, as always, from here in the california Bay.

Wow that 2kg furnace is tiny....Bet it ain't easy getting the crucible out of that... I don't know about you but I find the cast iron ingot moulds to be really hit and miss with copper. I've made some horrible ingots with mine. I've never had a bad one with the graphite moulds though, always seem to get a much better finish. Really interesting to see the difference in gas usage, I didn't think the difference would be so great. Super video... and only you would do a 4 furnace melt haha - love it mate. Cheers Andy 🍺🍺🍺👍👍👍😎

Is it just me or did both the refractory bars come out better? I wouldn't think the furnace would matter on the quality of the pour, just the melt time. We are going to need another test using cable/wire to verify!
@relyonno1921
@relyonno1921 5 жыл бұрын
@@thegreatestdane8978 The refractory took longer didn't it? Maybe the longer time helped burn out the impurities or allow gases to escape. I'm wondering if the same results could be had by turning down the gas flow on the wool lined furnace so it would take a little longer. If so, the wool lined would be the way to go. Faster melt time when you want it and good quality to
@bigstackD
@bigstackD 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah there is a few factors at play here but I’m sure I’ll get to the bottom of it 👍🏻. Another thing is the molds May have been different temps and they may have had a tiny bit of paint still on them that hadn’t quite burned out creating the bubbles 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️.

Thanks for the multi furnace breakdown. Really appreciated that. Would love if you made a video exploring porosity and coming to a how to prevent copper porosity procedure. Sometimes it's there's sometimes it's not. Gotta be caused by something. Moisture/Pour Temp/Mold Contamination I'm not sure. Thanks BigD

Well thank you my friend I appreciate your comment and I love your support, when it comes to Porosity there is I think a lot to learn and a lot to explore so before I will release a video on it I would do a lot of experimentation because I don’t want to come across as a melting Muppet which clearly half my video show that I am. 😉👍🏻

Completely understandable I just know for sure that if you did that experimentation behind the scenes and came up with a great procedure, which we all know you're quite capable of doing well, the video would get a ton of views. Watching test results is super addicting to the learny crowd your followers are. Don't forget to keep teaching new things between your melts! That's what brought us to your channel and what will keep us around! Much respect my friend. Keep up the great content and documentary. Cheers!

I realize I'm responding to a question from two years ago, but I also realize that TODAY, someone might be reading this for the first time. I did some digging and here's a key paragraph about pure copper casting: "Pure Copper and Chromium Copper. Commercially pure copper and high copper alloys are very difficult to melt and are very susceptible to gassing. In the case of chromium copper, oxidation loss of chromium during melting is a problem. Copper and chromium copper should be melted under a floating flux cover to prevent both oxidation and the pickup of hydrogen from moisture in the atmosphere. In the case of copper, crushed graphite should cover the melt. With chromium copper, the cover should be a proprietary flux made for this alloy. When the molten metal reaches 1260oC, either calcium boride or lithium should be plunged into the molten bath to deoxidize the melt. The metal should then be poured without removing the floating cover."

Great vid as always! But I'm wondering why it took so much more gas on the FB2M 10kg over the FB1S 2kg. There's only a two minute run time difference but to jump from .82 to 2.68 seems like a lot. Is the burner that much bigger on the 10kg? If so I would think that would make the melt time shorter correct???
@mikea6272
@mikea6272 5 жыл бұрын
Although the ceramic uses less gas and melts quicker, the refractory seems to have been a smoother ingot after the pour. Could be a fluke with the moulds, but I think you should try the 10kg of refractory vs the 10kg in ceramic (not at the same time like a race) but use the same mould. Heat time's should equal the same in this video as well as gas usage, but id like to see if one pours a better ingot than the other...

Any theory on why the ceramic furnace ingots had a worse surface finish than the refractory ones? Do you think that maybe because they got up to temp faster, it had some effect on the copper?

The master of the Devil Forge! I actually like the one with the most "bubbles" It's like a AERO and for some strange reason made me think of mars? The planet. Was at a mate's workshop today. @bigstackD
@bigstackD 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Gert how are ya? When it comes to the golf clubs I would highly doubt they are pure aluminium , or even aluminium but if they are aluminium they would be an aluminium alloy of some sort to make them super strong otherwise every time you hit the ball it would leave small indentations in the club 👍🏻. And yes my friend I believe the two bars that were completely ugly and full of bubbles are definitely my favourites and I would never melt them down for anything they are one of a kind and I absolutely love them😁👍🏻

Anything with zinc (ex. Brass) 100% needs one. It is a good idea to wear one no matter what metal you are melting though. Zinc gives acute exposure but a lot of the others can give chronic exposure (short term vs long term effects).
