Man, I wish that teachers in language classes taught in a way where you're "forced" to become conversational in a short period of time. Usually I find that in most language classes that's not the norm at all, which causes people to go a very long period of time before being able to communicate. With these guys, I felt like the tutors' focus was almost entirely on getting them to be able to speak, even if it was just a little bit. This causes them to be able to communicate within such a short time frame. It'd be awesome if there were more teachers out there who took a leaf from this video :/

I think the problem is that some teachers (or their handlers) are obsessed with following books rather than focusing on output.

class focuses not on being understood, but on being correct. the way these guys were talking at the end was very good for any Romanian to understand what they were saying, but it was unacceptable for a language class. I have learned English as a foreign language in school and have learned good grammar and spelling and vocabulary. All this was very useful while conducting my business exclusively in English for many years, I was writing better English than native speakers. Yet when I moved to the US I had a hard time speaking to people and understanding what they were saying. conversational English is a completely different beast and I believe being fluent in a language can only be learned by living among native speakers.

I agree with you, but as a French teacher, I give class in one-on-one, I sometimes meet students like them, who ask questions, and have a special ability to understand the structure of the language, and manage to make quickly sentences by themselves. But it's not that common. If you look at the video, you'll notice that the learners are leading the conversation, not the tutors. That is what makes the difference for me. I'm learning Macedonian by myself and I apply the same method as them, only with the basic questions, talking with locals. You need to have a huge appetite for learning to learn fast. They look like they do have a huge appetite for learning Romanian, and that works!

Every single thing that they've said about our language and its influences and how it looks and sounds so similar to .. kind of all the languages they know, is just completely true. I always say that... If you know Latin, basic words in Turkish, basic words in Russian and Slavonic and the Slavic language used in the Church, some Italian, some Portuguese, some French and some German or some Hungarian, you can basically understand anything because the form of the word is not that different. I've always been really passionate and even though I've never got enough knowledge as a true polyglot, I can sincerely say that I've studied most of the grammar structures and I always look for the Romanian words and see what their origin is and it's really impressive. Amazing job, amazing team and I really wanna see at least one of those amazing people that just "absorb" languages speak mine, the Romanian language. Mult succes și sper ca in viitor să faceți mai multe videoclipuri legate de România și limba română pentru că avem nevoie de oameni ca voi să arate și celorlalte popoare cât de impresionantă este țara noastră.

Cidijsjdkkd Kskdjdjkd there are differences even in Brazil! Rio de Janeiro, Maranhão and Santa Catarina speak more like a mix of Portugal Portuguese with french accent but Brazilian vocabulary. São Paulo and others states from the South speak more like Spanish and American accent but Brazilian vocabulary (always Brazilian vocabulary) Northern have their own accent I think. Centre-east and North speak like natives and some Spanish. Hey, people in Portuguese community understand more Portuguese from Brazil than the Portugal! Portugal is the oldest one, the culturally preserved, but Brazilian one is easier because we speak not with the mouth closed and no consonant pronunciation. It's like the British and the American, in this situation Brazilians are Americans.

The Romanian pronounciation is quite easy to do and even more for a Polyglot. Anyhow, what I wanted to add is that at least for me, Romanian language it's very similar to some Portuguese words and I'd say even more with Catalan ones. Obviously it has same similar words cause all of them comes from Latin (the most part); but for a Portuguese and Catalan speaker, we will find this language(Romanian) very easy to study.

I'm Italian and our mannerism of saying 'eeeeehhh' while thinking about what to say is what drives me crazy everytime. Easy way to spot an Italian speaking another language. Even Luca, a polyglot and language coach, does that xD Romanian is very pleasant to hear, imo. Maybe because for me it familiar, but it actually seems like a weird Italian dialect/Portuguese with some Slavic things. It's very fascinating!

I never could grasp english from school... So i created may own environment by watching movies in different languages translated into english. Being exposed to conversations is the best way to understand and learn other languages. The next part was by reading books and newspaper articles. I only used the dictionary when for grammar and new words.

Oprescu Florin I remember understanding English/American movies and sitcoms without subtitles when i was about 9-10 years old. And when i hit high school is when i understood how to speak... even though i could read in primary school. The more i got into American movies the more i learnt. And now when on a lot of social media platform is spoken i noticed my vocabulary started to expand. So it is al about being exposed to the language and being 'forced' to understand. In my case my interest in things where i was only able to get information in the English language is what forced me to 'learn' and get a better grip with the language.

Very well done video and a beautifully executed challenge! Extremely fun to watch and inspiring as well. :)

I love studying language- I am currently learning my second language and hope to learn many more- if you are also interested in not just learning languages but also the study of language I really would recommend the Langfocus channel. Paul always gives such an in depth description of languages and this can also help you decide which languages you'd like to learn first. It's great and I bring it up because I love the channel just so much. I definitely recommend this to anyone interested in language especially if you are an English speaker.

"Will be easy to learn Romanian if you know Italian,France and Portugese!" Yes and no. Some latin origin words are really similar, some others evolved differently, as Romanian was isolated from the rest of the romance speaking word for a centuries. Moreover, there is a steady slavic influence in vocabulary and grammar. Plus, to the lesser extent and more in the vocabulary, from turkish, hungarian and greek. That's why this language is so beautiful, beceause it connects west and east.

You guys speak around, what about 10 languages well, & yet you are still learning more. I absolutely love it! Keep doin what yall are doin!! to the Babbel media team: please make sure that Mike, Alex, Luca, & Mike hear or read this. I want them to know what a difference they are making. I speak English & Spanish. I love languages!!!! Next year, a friend & I will start to learn french through a tutor on italki & through self-study. My aspirations are to learn as best I can French, German, Portuguese, & Japanese in the next 10 years. Language lovers are hard to find. I live in the United States. In the city that I live in it is difficult to find people who are truly passionate about languages like these guys. what do I have to do take trip to Berlin & meet one of them? could I set up an appointment or something?

Awesome!! Îmi place foarte mult! (I like it very much). They are right, Romanian is like a salad of the other languages they had learnt before. Although Romanian language is mostly latin it has so many influences that make it difficult to learn. That's because throughout the centuries everyone wanted a piece of Romania to claim as theirs, so today we have a latin language with Hungarian, Russian, Turkish, Serbian, German, French and lately English sounds and words. So like a language salad :) These guys are great at learning new languages so it's not something that comes too difficult to them. And If you already speak Italian or Spanish or any other romance language you can learn basic Romanian too. I've learnt Spanish just by watching TV because it sounded so familiar. Pero no se escribir muy bien en espanol. :) Trebuie să bem bere acum! Bere românească...Timișoreana. :)))

My mind is so blown. These people are impeccably talented. I would so very much like to have the same progress with Mandarin. I also study Spanish in school but at school the teacher never has us talk in class except for speaking benchmarks, 1 per quarter. It’s really a shame that she doesn’t have us converse more often, and my class is the second highest the school offers.

I've been learning Romanian on and off for two years. Glad to see I still remember a lot of this stuff. I still mess up on writing sentences because I know in Romanian they write words in sentences backwards. That sometimes messes me up. I'll write something the way you would write in English and then discover it doesn't make that much sense in Romanian and I have to switch words around.

Babbel is only good to start, after A1 level it's not going to work anymore. Try finding someone whose mother tongue is the language you want to learn and just talk. Start watching videos on KZbin ( they do many language videos on how to count, verbs, adjectives etc) and reading simple books. It's the only way really if you are on a budget. Forget about babbel, you are never going to get there with that app, use it just to learn basic sentences and things.
