If anyone that lives in the US and enjoys cooking a lot of Korean, Japanese or Chinese foods, then you should really invest in a simple but practical and cheap staples to keep on hand and are easy to obtain here. That way you are prepared for any recipes Aaron might teach and then some 😉 1. Sesame oil- This really is a must as it has a distinct flavor and should not be substituted unless you don't like the flavor. 2. Soy sauce 3. Sesame seeds (I get untoasted and toast them myself) 4. Nori sheets (you can store in the freezer in a Ziplock bag to keep fresh) 5. Wakame seaweed - for making broth and stocks (you can also store in the freezer- I put mine in with my nori sheets because it's convenient and saves space) 6. Kimchi - I am not brave enough to make my own yet, but I am working up the confidence to do it 😆 7. Gochujang - it's not as spicy as it looks 8. Miso paste 9. Mirin 10. Shaoxing wine - If you cook any Chinese foods 11. Oyster sauce 12. Fish Sauce 13. Shrimp paste The last two are for when I am making Thai food a lot of the time, but my love for cooking Asian cuisine can't keep up with my pantry space , don't get me started on what I keep on hand when I want to make Indian food. 😂 This is just a basic staple of things there are so many more things I keep but those are the things I tend to use the most of, and I thought a simple list would help people who are starting out or are new to Korean cooking. Just be warned if you are like me your addiction will not stop at pantry ingredients as I have also acquired over the years a nice Cuckoo rice cooker (the investment in a good one is worth it- I've used this one for years with no issues) various Korean stone cookware, electric hot pot and an indoor grill to make Korean BBQ 😂 I know I have a serious cooking addiction but I can't help it, I love great food.

I have a lot of this stuff because my dad loves Japanese food, so we ALWAYS have soy sauce and seaweed. My mom gets kimchi at the store when they have it because she knows I like it lol
@90Beater2 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you posted. Luckily near Los Angeles we have large Filipino and Korean supermarkets so it makes it cheap and easy to get most things you need. If not there is always Amazon. We just bought a coal fired Korean BBQ and it has been a hit with friends and family. I would add a few more things that you can't go wrong to have. 1. ssamjang (like gochujang but thicker) We have both on hand. 2. Korean Pancake mix 3. Korean chicken batter mix (Korean Fried Chicken is so much better than the US version) Aaron and Claire have videos on this. 4. Korean tongs (They are small and skinny but very useful when cooking) 5. Korean pepper flakes (They are mild but add lots of flavor to food) One thing I learned online is if your American pallet is not use to Kimchi try cooking it. I never liked it much cold but love it heated up. Thank you Aaron and Claire to introducing the world to new and great foods.

Love this! I do the bibimbap for breakfast every morning. I slice two pieces of bacon, add to pan, chop green onion and add the white part in with the bacon. I add 3 spoon full of already cooked brown rice, then add Gochujang sauce, sesame oil, and chili oil. Set aside when cooked. Cook Sunnyside up egg, put on top when finished cooking, add the green part of green onion, and some grated sharp cheddar cheese. It is my go to breakfast each morning. I love it!! Was inspired by one of your previous videos for this.

That sounds amazing! Thanks for the idea! (I might be stealing it.) 😀
@TheRiehlThing423 жыл бұрын
@@ScoutSarge It really is good. I have found recently that if I use Gochujang paste, add sesame oil and chili oil works. If I have Gochujang sauce, I just add a good amount, and don't need the sesame oil and chili oil. Experiment with different types, and veggies, like Aaron would say, "don't worry about it." Improvising on it works really well. Another variation was breakfast sausage, I used Gochujang paste, sesame oil, after the breakfast sausage was browned. Then just store in the fridge, take out what you want to use, and have another variation.
