To understand the first tip, look at where the CTRL+R loopcut would be created - the flow of quads by default makes it so there is a crease between a horizontal and a vertical loop. By collapsing the edge loops as on the video, you now have a bend, making a single face-loop going around the edge, just like on the concave side. It's not objectively better, but after Catmull-Clark subdivision it represents the usual detail of such corners. Still, it is possible that you actually want that crease.

Omg i was looking for this, i always mess up corners, thanks!!!

Wow. First time I've heard about not using 0.5 or 1 for bevel shape. I sometimes use 0.75 to get "holding loops" where I plan to not use subdiv, with the added benefit that "curvature combs" are better; there is a gradual change between radius and flat rather than a sudden change even if tangency is maintained.

Thanks! It's a really fun subject, but will still take me at least a month. I'm doing a lot of experimentation. Modeling the same complex thing several times. With concept art by a real concept artist this time. Stay tuned 🙂

I tend to UV my 3d model before applying modifiers specially the bevel modifier. Is that a good practice?😅

Greetings from Nebraska first. I asked you, I bought the Blender Secret book, and now I want to buy the course called Hard Surface with a discount code, but it tells me that it is not valid? I am adding the discount code, but it does not accept it, how do I solve it? Thanks
@BlenderSecretsАй бұрын
Hey, thanks for letting me know. The coupon was inactive, but it's fixed now. You can try again. Sorry for the trouble.
@joseoliver6314Ай бұрын
@BlenderSecrets Sorry for the inconvenience Mr. Blender Secret, the EARLYNBIRD discount coupon is still inactive, and I am truly interested in this new course since I have learned a lot with the other course and with this one, which is the style I have become comfortable with, I know it would take off to infinity and beyond, so I will keep trying, and if I have to buy it without the discount, I will do so because it is well worth it. God bless you and greetings from Nebraska. I am happy with your courses!!!

@@joseoliver6314 Hi, I think the problem may be that you type it incorrectly: The correct coupon is "EARLYBIRD" not "EARLYNBIRD". Here is a link that includes the coupon: blender-secrets-school.teachable.com/p/hard-surface-subdivision-modeling?coupon_code=EARLYBIRD

I don't get the first one, why does that cause shading artifacts?
@richardconway64255 ай бұрын
Had to rewatch to check, but it's in the context of wanting to apply a bevel to that geometry. If you try to bevel any of that geometry, you'll get a right mess immediately with overlapping geometry with that pole right at the corner. To apply bevels to any edges, especially corners or curves, the geometry has to flow away from the edge perpendicular to it. That way you can get a really nice clean bevel. The geometry itself, as your question implies, is perfectly fine on its own, if you're not doing anything else with it.
@gottagowork5 ай бұрын
@@richardconway6425 You also get a loop/ring that is contextualized to the geometry forming the bevel. Not necessarily related to "shading" as such, but considered good modelling practice in most cases.
