Hey there, friends & neighbours! I'm excited about this one. This might be the best way to learn the modes for 6-string bass. This method is different from anything you've seen before, and it's sure to help you get these modes under your fingers with a bit of work.
LET'S TAKE IT TO THE BASS!

Two words Rich, "En Fuego"🔥 You've done it again my man, what a great lesson. BTW I've been teaching a friend of mine to play bass and you're making me look brilliant.

Always appreciate having something 6 string bass related to open up the neck. I bought my 6 string to learn how to use some of the upper register to noodle and explore melody. I find i play a lot of my old 4 string favourite tunes on the 6 and that has forced an adaptation for my lh/rh technique (mostly effective muting) and i tend to use the low B to fill things out a bit. However I've been a little lost when practicing scales and the like in a way that uses all 6 strings practically. So this is great!

This is the best method for visualizing the modes of the six string that I've seen, inspired genius!

Beautiful tone! I just recently found a Carvin Bunny Brunel 6-string online, and bought it just to explore the possibilities. Day-1, I thought there is no way I'm going to be able to play this thing...but every passing day it's gotten easier to navigate and I'm getting more facile moving the full length of the fingerboard. Great video! Just subscribed and looking forward to learning more from you!

Just want to let you know that English is not my mother tongue but your explanations are so clear that I've learned more from you instead several phisical teachers in my mother tongue, you were very helpful to fix my timing issues with your rhythmic exercise, thanks a lot and greetings from Italy

Between what I've learnt from you and my SBL membership, I've got a lot closer to being the bassist I always wanted to be. But this is going to make a huge difference. Thanks again.

Man I love all of your lessons. I just got a 6 string a few days ago and this is going to help me a bunch. I basically do this with the 4 string, and guitar, but I hadn’t quite connected the dots the way you have. Pretty amazing how a slight difference in thinking about a thing can open some big doors. I love it. Thank you

As I said on your last video, this one, too, is amazingly helpful. I don't play a 6 strong, but I do play a 5, and this works equally well for a 5. You're the best!

Thanks so much for this one Rich!!! Watching from South Australia and I think that while this might not be a complete light bulb moment, I'm starting to see that light start to glow a bit. This is wonderful mate and I'm very grateful for you doing these videos, I picked up a six string earlier this year and I'm really enjoying the versatility it allows in terms of playing across the neck. I do find that this opens up my mind to becoming a bot more experimental which is very handy as I play with a guitarist and myself often times, that extra range and sonic exploration zone helps to fatten and fill out our sound. You absolutely rock my man, keep up the great work.

I had a six string bass for a while that I didn't connect with (uninspiring tone and narrow string spacing). Thinking of diving back into a six string and your compound mode approach sounds super useful!

This is gold Rich! I wish I thought about it this way a long time ago. What also helped me alot was thr way Anthony Wellington teaches modes. Seeing one big 7 string pattern. Are you using the fretwrap in this video? If so, is it right on the nut or slightly before or after? Cheers and keep the great content coming!

I'll probably never get a 6 because I already have more instruments than time but this still gives a different perspective for navigating 4 strings. 👍

Good 'hack'. A similar approach, but which doesn't rely on a 'B' string root is the rolling stack of 1--2--4 (each a tone apart) x 3 strings, up a fret (ascending)/down a fret (descending), 1-2--4 (semitone then a tone) x 2 strings & finally 1--3-4 (tone then a semitone) x 2. That rolling pattern can start on any string.

So the rule is : the mode/shape 2nd set of strings is a 10th (3rd) higher than the mode on the 1st set of strings. the first example is technically C# locrian on the lower set and E Dorian. The Low c# is in the position but not played :)))

I'm delaying my entry into 6 string territory, because the one I like has 35" scale... Other basses that have the same spacing (18-19mm) and 34" scale are quite expensive OR have useless B string...

Great lesson! Could you do a lesson about how to get from intermediate bass player (stuck in one place practicing 2 octave scales, arepeggios, warm-up exercises, improvising and playing a bass line created on a fly to a backing track) to the advanced bass player and what to do, what to learn, what to practice, some theory to become advanced, some scale and arpeggio exercises but for the advanced bass player? IT WOULD BE SO COOL! And many people would benefit from this lesson. A genre playing lessons would also be GREAT for example how to play rock on bass, how to play metal on bass, how to play soul on bass, how to play motown on bass, how to play country on bass, how to play fusion (jazz-rock) on bass, how to play funk on bass and of course how to play jazz on bass guitar and how to start easily with walking bass lines and slowly become more fluent in playing walking bass (everything for intermediate/early advanced bass players) ! Could you please do lessons like this? It would be awesome! You are a great teacher and thank you for everything! I hope you will do lessons like these ideas I gave you in this comment. WE WOULD LOVE THAT! Greetings from Poland, Mike :)
