My husband was reading at 4. By the time he went to first grade( they didn’t have kindergarten) he was reading fluently. The teacher asked every day what words they had read that week. Most kids were staying stop sign or the name of their street, my husband was talking about the front page of the newspaper. The teacher thought, I need to get this kid out of here before he gets teased, so they put him in second grade reading. The next year they let him spend his reading class in the library and he got to pick any book he wanted. Then in fourth or fifth grade they taught him how to speed read. I on the other hand get so relaxed when I read my mind wanders and I have to go back and reread. As a kid it was painful, but if I was reading the books I wanted to it didn’t feel like such a burden to have to reread. Reading the best gift we were ever given.
