In this episode, I'm excited to share 4 things I stopped doing as a minimalist. These minimalist changes have not only simplified my space but also brought a profound sense of peace and clarity to my life. Minimalism or minimalist aesthetics may not be for everyone, but decluttering can benefit anyone. If you're looking for tips and ways to spend less time cleaning or simplify your life, definitely watch this!
First, let's talk about under-bed storage. I used to cram all sorts of things under the bed, but after a leak in our home forced us to clear it out, I reclaimed our bedroom as a sanctuary for sleep.
Next, I discuss the pitfalls of bulk buying and how it led to excess clutter. Shifting away from bulk buying allowed me to regain control over my consumption and save money in the long run.
Then, I share how I decluttered our kitchen counter, sticking only to essentials and reducing visual clutter.
Lastly, I said good bye to our rug, simplifying our cleaning routine and finding a balance between comfort and convenience.
Join me on my minimalist journey as I continue to discover the benefits of living with less. Don't forget to like, subscribe, and stay tuned for future updates. Thanks for watching - your support means the world to me!
-----------
[DISCLAIMER] While I recognize that everyone is in different life stages with unique needs, I'm here to share my personal journey and the insights I've gained from embracing minimalism and decluttering. It's ultimately up to each individual to decide what possessions to keep and what to let go of. For me, simplifying and having fewer possessions has had a profoundly positive impact, bringing me a sense of peace and clarity in life.

At 70, you can imagine how many years of shopping and cleaning I have behind me! I'm so very tired of it all. I started decluttering a few years ago...and what a relief!! And it's true, I miss nothing and feel good about helping others by dropping off "stuff" at charity bins. 👍😎🇨🇦

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's inspiring to hear how decluttering has brought you relief and a sense of lightness. It's incredible how letting go of excess possessions can free up not just physical space but also mental and emotional energy. Your decision to donate to charity bins is not just benefiting you but also making a positive impact on others in need. Keep up the amazing work. Thank you again for sharing your comment! 🌟😃🌿

That's amazing! Did you mean you got rid of 90% of your possessions overall? I've made strides in decluttering too - I've removed about 80% or more of my belongings and I'm working towards reaching that 90% mark. Your journey is truly inspiring, and thank you for sharing your experience! It's always motivating to hear about others simplifying their lives. ✨

Thank you for clarifying! Starting with decorations and working your way through the rest of your house sounds like a smart approach. I can definitely relate-I had accumulated a lot of home decor items over time, and many were just collecting dust. Now, I'm focused on keeping only the pieces that truly matter to me. Decluttering is indeed a process and journey, but it's also about uncovering what brings me joy and surrounding myself with things I love. It's inspiring to hear about your journey, and thank you for sharing your experience!

i finally found another person who doesn't want the rug! I did the same thing- removed the rug (I feel that while the room is less cozy and, perhaps, seems "unfinished", I LOVE the negative space and the ease of vacuuming/washing the floors. There is something delightful about walking barefoot on the non-carpeted floors!

That's fantastic to hear! It's amazing how liberating it can be to remove the rug. I totally agree-the room might feel less cozy at first, but the simplicity and ease of cleaning are such a win. Plus, there's something truly satisfying about walking barefoot on those clean, open floors. Thanks for sharing your experience-it's always great to connect with someone who appreciates the beauty of negative space 😃✨

I'm in the process of decluttering and I'm finding that just seeing more floor space makes me feel so happy and refreshed. I've found a charity place in my hometown that have the most lovely ladies. The last time I went there I spent some time speaking to one of the ladies, as I was concerned that my items might not be suitable for them and I found the gratitude and kindness made me feel so incredibly happy. It's lovely to know that some of your items can have a second life and you're helping that to happen.
@SimplicityPlus

I can completely relate to that feeling! It's amazing how simply seeing more floor space can bring so much joy and refreshment. I've also found myself wondering why I cluttered up so much to cover the floor in the past. Interestingly, experiencing leaks in our apartment multiple times, resulting in floor replacements, has given me a newfound appreciation for seeing the floor. That's partly why I've chosen not to put a rug down at the moment-I want to fully enjoy the beauty of the bare floor. Also, it's truly satisfying to know that our items can have a second life and contribute to someone else's happiness. Thank you for sharing your recent experience at the local charity place!

The big thing I disagree on: not buying in bulk. Remember covid? Toilet paper and cleaning supplies were not to be found on any shelves! You can use white vinegar to clean almost anything but when you don't have toilet paper well........😉😉😉 Also if you live in an area where winter is often 5-6 months long and you may be snowed in for days, you do buy in bulk/stock up on essentials like food...and yes that proverbial toilet paper! 🤣🤣 There is a balance even for being a minimalist.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. I agree with you that finding a balance between having enough and avoiding overconsumption is key. Everyone's needs are unique, and it's important to adapt accordingly. Living in a metropolitan area definitely provides easier access to stores and online delivery services, which can simplify the process of purchasing essentials. Personally, I've found that buying in moderation helps me manage my possessions better and prevents feeling overwhelmed. For items like toilet paper, I've established a routine of buying a pack of 6 and replenishing once I reach my last or second-to-last roll. This approach works well for me in maintaining a clutter-free space. Also, I appreciate your patience as I work on a follow-up video focusing on my minimalist habits and tips for maintaining the home under control. I hope you'll tune in when it's ready! Thanks again for sharing your thoughts 😃🙏

I agree that there's a happy balance that that can be achieved. I do buy certain things in bulk like canned goods but only if I can commit to using them within the recommended date and organizing them properly. However, I no longer buy excessive backstock of liquid toiletries such as shampoo, body wash, and hand soap. The preservatives in them will break down over time so the ingredients can separate and go off after a while. Usually, the best deal on toilet paper is when you buy the biggest pack so that's a no brainer to me because it always gets used up.
@SimplicityPlus
@SimplicityPlus 22 күн бұрын
It sounds like you've found a great balance! Buying in bulk for items you know you'll use within a reasonable time frame is a smart approach. And you make a good point about the longevity of certain products, especially liquid toiletries. Nowadays, I buy a replacement after I use up the shampoo, etc. I found this approach the easiest for me to manage. Plus I won't need to have extra storage space for the extras that I may forget about or may not get to. For toilet papers, I buy a pack of 6. When I'm down to the last one, I buy a new pack of 6. Thank you for sharing your approach and insights!

Hi there, I found the information you were looking for. The flooding I chose is called "Reward Sereno Delfini". It's made of white oak and I believe it is engineered wood. The plank is 7 1/2” wide, which is wider than our previous 5” hardwood (maple) plank, and I'm much happier with this width. Despite initially worrying that the Sereno collection's fewer knots in the wood might mean less character, I actually love it in person. The color may appear darker on the website, but it's lighter in person. Here is a link to the collection for you rewardflooring.com/collections/sereno Let me know if you have any other questions!

I forgot to mention, before making your final selection, be sure to request samples of the flooring you're considering. Suppliers typically provide hand-sized samples, or even larger ones, for you to take home. This way, you can see how they look in different lighting conditions, both during the day and at night in your home. It's essential to ensure you're happy with your choice, as it's a significant commitment both in terms of time and finances. Perhaps you already knew this, but I wanted to share from my own experience just in case.

@@SimplicityPlus Thank you! Yes, totally agree. I have replaced flooring in 4 houses. I used 3 different brands with similar style and color. I have been looking for something like your selection. I’ve been to many stores but I have yet to find it. Also, one of my top considerations is the ease of mopping with damp cloth or mop. 3 out of 4 that I purchased were great. The last one I didn’t notice, when I bought it that it’s a bit more matted texture and it’s not as easy as the previous three. If you can, do you mind sharing the brand and style of your flooring please? I live in the SF Bay Area also and I hope to visit the store or request a sample (if Online purchase). Thank you!!! I find your video presentations and contents most relevant, well thought of and with deep internal meaning: transformation within yourself which in turn affects how you view and use things around you. Thanks again!

You mentioned you still buy table napkins. Why not just use cloth napkins and throw them in the washer with your other laundry. Better for savings and less trash in the landfill.
@SimplicityPlus
@SimplicityPlus 15 күн бұрын
Yes, I do still buy paper napkins. I find them to be versatile as they double as kitchen paper towels. For me, it's all about striking a balance. While I do use reusable napkins or towels (those made of compostable materials like cellulose) whenever possible, there are times when the food I'm dealing with is greasy or prone to staining the napkins. In such cases, cleaning them requires more water and soap, not to mention the additional electricity if I'm using a washing machine. So, I feel it's important to find a balance between convenience and being mindful of our resources. I'd be happy to hear more about your solutions to this if you have any additional tips. I'm grateful that you caught that small part in the video about my paper napkins ✨🙏
@Carole616
@Carole616 14 күн бұрын
@@SimplicityPlus OK, I don't use paper towels either. I use rags instead of paper towels and they also go in the washer. I don't feel that I am using more electricity because I just put them in a wash load I am already doing.
@SimplicityPlus
@SimplicityPlus 14 күн бұрын
@@Carole616 That's a great approach! Using rags instead of paper towels is definitely a sustainable choice, and it's wonderful that you've found a system that works well for you and minimizes waste. For me, using cloth napkins and rugs to wipe off excess oil and food that can stain leads to increased water, detergent, and electricity usage. Especially after a leak in our kitchen sink, our plumber recommended avoiding draining greasy food (or anything at all), as it can damage the garbage disposal and pipes. Since we cook often at home, I'm striving to strike a balance between conserving water and maintaining the integrity of our garbage disposal and pipes. Additionally, managing cloth napkins and rugs and washing them regularly adds an extra layer of managing belongings. While it might be a bit controversial, I'm committed to owning fewer things while prioritizing sustainable choices. As part of this effort, I'm actively working on reducing my paper napkin consumption. If I discover a better balance or solution as I continue to assess, I'll be sure to let you know. Thank you again for sharing your method - it's always inspiring to hear about different ways to reduce our environmental impact!

Minimalism differs from one person to another person. How much you need depends on your lifestyle. But simply keeping decluttered and simple is the key. You are trying to shift your focus to more important things in the life. But when it comes to " minimalistic aesthetics". l think this has nothing to do with minimalism. You can be minimalist and have bright colour decoration as soon as it doesn't overwhelm you.
@SimplicityPlus
@SimplicityPlus 19 күн бұрын
Absolutely, I couldn't agree more. Minimalism is indeed a highly personal journey, shaped by our individual lifestyles and priorities. What matters most is finding the balance that resonates with us personally, allowing us to focus on what truly holds value in our lives. As you mentioned, minimalistic aesthetics can take many forms, and what's important is that it aligns with our own sense of simplicity and doesn't overwhelm us. Thank you for sharing your insights!

My family will always be bulk buyers. First thing you save money on this, second thing you don’t need run to a shop every second day, for daily items or say toilet tissue for example. I buy coke in bulk, so I know when I want a can a coke is there for me. That helps prevent flash buyings because you visit shops less frequent.

Having essentials readily available at home definitely helps streamline shopping and prevents impulse purchases.
