Dr. Mackie really makes the scriptures come alive and never fails to teach truths I have never seen or thought of before...he always puts the scripture into perspective with the back stories. He is one of the best bible teachers I've ever encountered..."are you with me"

I am just about to turn 73 times around the sun. That's a lot of miles!! I wrote you once and told you I'm glad I found the Bible Project and that It would help me catch up.... My pipe dream is seeing Moses come out of Midian at about eighty years old...the types and symbols are flying off me and have a Savior in my sights!

This story of redemption is so beautiful. I never noticed how it was repeated throughout the Bible, but I see now. Out of Gods love and mercy, we turn towards His judgement. Let Him recalibrate the rights and wrongs in our hearts, and then we fall into His grace Thank you pastor Tim 😌

The more i here you teach about the Bible, the more it Presents itself as a fractal. different stories ultimately pointing to Jesus's love and judgment and how broken we are. We are really broken.

I remember reading that Nineveh worshipped Dagon,, half mam half fish god, and his female counterpart. Wonder if the Ninevites ever were told about Jonah being in the great fish? Interesting as well, is that the city was a three day walk to cross. Sort of the three days Jonah was in the great fish. So much symbolism in this book.It is also interesting that when Jeremiah warned Jerusalem and Judah of coming doom, they wanted to kill Jeremiah, refused to listen,refused to repent. Makes me wonder how the church in the western nations will take being warned of our sins and that we need to repent? The Israelites in Jerusalem and Judaea mingled their worship. They went to the temple, but also bowed down to pagan gods. I think we are guilty if doing what they did.

Does shoove mean any kind of turn when you found you were going in the wrong direction, or is it specifically a 180 degree turn? If it is specifically 180 degrees, some people might find it helpful to translate it as the modern phrase "do a 180"

Christendom is a mighty hunter of souls that sold its birthright for a bite of the Truth and whose blessing was usurped by People of the Promise...

The motivation needed for the ninevites to the repent came from jonah actually being in the fish. They worshiped a god that was a part fish! Word must have gotten out about how the god of jonah saved him from the great fish. Not unlike egypt.

The motivation for the Ninevites to repent came from God's judgment call on them. Even though this message of judgement was poorly conveyed by Jonah, they understood what was necessary to do. Their response? They "shuv"ed (the Hebrew word for repenting/turning away from sin). See the king's instruction to them in v 8: "Let them give up their evil ways and their violence". Verse 10 shows God's response of grace and love - "He had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction He had threatened."

Maybe they heard about this weird guy that was barfed up by a great fish...maybe he told others and the word spread so that when he said that, they were primed... they believed...scary that this would happen...some great God, his God!

Look I get that it's not a children's story, none of the Bible is but you still need to introduce them to these tales somehow and three year olds don't need to learn ancient Hebrew. I've been a youth worker for over twenty years - I love your teaching but seriously could you stop making youth workers feel like we're sinning
@AverageAmerican3 жыл бұрын
I love his teaching too and I wonder if he could stop making the average American feel like sinners too . . . /ponder
@jellyfish03113 жыл бұрын
That's not the point. Teaching Jonah's story to children is good. God commanded his people to teach the youth. The problem is when adults stay in that surface reading of the book because they remember it from childhood.
@bigburton24 Жыл бұрын
Yes, the problem is we refuse to teach children about the struggles of being a follower of Jesus. We tell a happy store and neglect chapter 4, and therefore the children feel isolated and alone. Even some adults feel isolated in their faith. The story of Jonah is far more impactful and beautiful than a children’s book.
