So you've been hacked...you're not alone. Most of us will eventually experience some kind of account breach or identity theft this year. Time is critical, though, and these are the steps you need to take to make sure that you're prepared and know how to recover.

Yes, set up text alerts on all your important accounts so you get notified right away if someone is trying to use them. And most credit cards and some debit cards, let you freeze or lock them when you are not going to be using them. That blocks anyone from trying to use them for a purchase, for the ATM, or for a balance transfer. It does NOT block recurring payments. One other option to consider is using virtual credit cards. Some credit card companies will give you a one time use credit card number for your account.

Preventative methods: setup multiple email accounts, I have 10 email accounts and they are all used for different reasons. Specifically create a BS account for registrations online or subscriptions. an email you will never check unless you have to verify an account . this means 90% of spam will end up there and not in email accounts you use everyday. I almost never have spam in my inbox and this helps with being "hacked" or data breaches

I'd like to add a substep: after recovering your e-mail or social media accounts, check your recent messages and activities (including outgoing ones). If you find that the scammers have used your account to message your contacts, you should warn the affected people and tell them to change their passwords if they already replied with the info "you" requested. Telling people is a lot easier when the hacker leaves a trail of who you need to warn.

Great advice. I especially like the concept of a credit freeze, so I looked up if I can get a credit freeze here in Canada, and nope. They aren't available and there are no plans for the government to require credit bureaus up here to offer them....sigh...

AV will often not find malware running in memory. The only way to remove any malware and be somewhat sure about it is to factory reset (wipe) the computer. Even then, hope that the boot sector has not been compromised. The latter is not super likely, but still possible.

The worst attack I experienced was when Equifax was breached and all my data with it. But I got $2.75 settlement check. Pretty sweet. And what I did about it is hope that the hundred million other people similarly impacted will be more attractive targets than me.

We’ve been hacked - network/printer/all devices incl tv’s/knows every keystroke so changing passwords doesn’t work/has accessed all accounts (financial/social/email/medical/utilities, etc). He/she knows everything about us! I’ve taken all necessary precautions but we need help figuring out how to get rid of him. I tried an IT Consultant & I knew more than him. Any suggestions on where I can go for help! We’re desperate & this has taken a toll on my health. Thanks for listening. PS I really enjoy your videos as they’re extremely informative.

With all the hacks that go on these days, I feel like these companies are getting hacked on purpose. I do have a question. When I have asked a company to delete my account repeatedly and they still haven’t, what can I do?

@@specialk9999 Depends on the company and the country you are out of. Surprisingly in the US, unless the personal information falls under very specific categories (Healthcare/medical, financial, credit, etc) there are no real federal laws when it comes to having companies remove your personal information... I am curious to which company, and what records they refuse to delete. Only reason being is my background in information security, and I LOVE contemplating making other ITs *who dont do their job* a living hell.

@@SARbud1387 appreciate your information and reply back. That’s messed up that are no federal laws about that. I’m in the U.S. The company I’m trying to get my account deleted is Rockstar Games. I haven’t used it in years cause I don’t really play video game that much anymore. I’ve emailed them 3 times asking them to delete my account. The first time, for some reason even though it’s not what I asked them, all they did was reset my password. I told them that is not what I asked them to do. Then heard nothing back so then started over with a new support request which was 1/5/23 and haven’t heard anything back.

I don’t trust the credit agencies with my data or the telephone companies. So what. Credit agencies collect it anyway and a cell phone is arguably essential.

Back in the day when there was no Facebook yet and you talked to your friends and family on MSN my hotmail account was once hacked. Lucky me the hacker wasn't a good one because after hacking my account he or she didn't change anything so I could just click on forgot password and get back in. At the time that email was only used for MSN, internet forums and other random stuff. Not for any personal stuff which I still did offline most of the time. Maybe it was someone I knew who just wanted to have some fun and try to hack... just like students now attacking their own school with ddoss or something.
