Hey Charles, Tim hear. I'm from south Mississippi. Just subscribed and I have to say your videos are some of the most informative I have watched and I have several I enjoy. Lots of details and really enjoy how organized you present the info. I grew up gardening around 6 years old with my grand father. Now years later, after he passed, I found a new love for it again. Have learned so much in the last three years. Keep up the good work.

You are right about using products that doesn't brake down. I learned it the hard way of rooting cuttings with regular potting mix. you are the first person I've seen to explain this situation. This video has a lot of information. Thanks

Hello The One, I've thought about this video for years... and trying to explain using a natural potting mix that does not include living things in an understandable way. The feedback has been positive, thankfully! :-) Thank you for the compliment!!! Charles :-)

regarding your homemade potting mix; 1 part peat, 1 part perlite, 1 part vermiculite, do you feel a coarse sand could replace the perlite? I find that perlite is very dusty, and floats to the surface of the pot when watering. great video

Thanks for yet another great video! Would you please do a video on how to grow young plants from Citrus cuttings? I am trying to do Mandarin & Blood Orange cuttings, following on-line tutorials but so far none survived. I have pretty much run out of ideas.
@IVOrganic6 жыл бұрын
Hello Kudala_Mangalooru, I will try to do a lesson more on point to your specific request, however, these videos published last year are related to your question: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJXYdWSfmdZ8f9U And consider starting the plants by way of air layering. Check this video out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIDNl2qCoc6Do68 Charles :-)

IV Organic Hi Charles, I tried starting cutting of the Acerola Cherry but 3 out of 6 rotted out. I want to try your method of Air Layering. With the cirtrus cuttings, is that how we got infescted with the HLB virus? We need a USDA cettified root stock, if I remeber right. Thanks for all the knowlegde you have blessed us with! Lets keep growing cool plants:)
@IVOrganic6 жыл бұрын
Hello Brandon Hubbard, The HLB citrus disease is caused by an Asian pest. Planes, cargo ships, etc, have virtually made all pests international. You need to practice good gardening practices to keep the pest (Asian Citrus Psyllid) populations low/ close to zero to minimize the risk of citrus infection. Products such as neem oil and spinosad-based products (alternating) can help as well. Grafting is not necessary, unless you want to control the size of the tree (dwarf, semi dwarf, standard) or offer disease resistance that the rootstock can benefit the scion... drought tolerance, etc, etc.... I hope this helps! Charles :-)

Hi Charles, thanks for responding. Yes, I have watched every one of your videos, plus many more, including the one you linked above which was very helpful in giving me the overall idea what to do. But I wish you could make a video where you can take about critical things to do; things NOT to do. For example people keep talking about making 45 degree angle cut right where the node is, in order for a Citrus cutting to develop roots. And then there are other who say the opposite. You could talk about the best time to get cuttings. I have gone through 4 different batches of cuttings I started back in December 2017. Perhaps that was the wrong time to get them? How to avoid/control mold on cuttings. Is it a must to have at least 2 trimmed leaves on the top of the cuttings? I live not too far from where you are - San Fernando Valley - so how frequently do we need to water the cuttings? Some say, you do it once in the beginning, cover them with bags & you're done. There are very many such issues you could explain and expound on in a video. Thanks.

Another awesome informative fig video. I love watching your videos because I learn so much. I will be potting my Figs this week. The only thing is my perlite in the cups has a greenish to the top. What do I do with that not to harm my Figs that may need to stay in the cups a bit longer to grow better root system. It is beginning to smell a bit. I have the spray and the can for the plant guard. Can I use the spray to protect the bark? Maybe spray a couple times on the stem and the leaves or do I need to put on a brush on? My stems are small. My older fig trees are doing great because of your help. I can’t wait to get some fruit. How long should a green fig take that is 3 year old and one is 2 years old to fruit? Is there anything I should be doing besides reporting them to bigger pots to get them to fruit not just grow leaves? Thanks again for all your help and I am a loyal IV Organic’s User!! I will send you some pictures soon!

Charles, Is it too late to take cuttings from a existing tree and root it out to plant in a small pot for next year or should I wait until winter to do this.

@gregbrooks95466 жыл бұрын
Charles, Can I start a fig cutting now with the double clear cup like you do by sticking it in rooting compound and sitting it in the window sill with 50/50 pearlite and vermiculite. Seems like everybody says to wait until fall or winter to do this

I love fresh figs from the trees. What kind of fig is recommended for S.California (I’m in LA between Culver City/Mar Vista area. Three miles from Venice Beach). I’ve heard of Turkey fig being very sweet but forgot exactly is been a while I think I tried a sample at someone’s yard many years ago but didn’t have a house yet to grow one.

I have one fig plant recently brought from nursery.That is very small but i could see fruits are coming out. This is still in the small pot. Should i remove these fruits or can i allow it to be in plant itself? Please suggest.

1st fruits can be removed to give better health to the growth of the plant.

I keep seeing videos explaining those roots above the soil line as being feeder roots... They say not to cover them with soil because it helps the roots get oxygen - and to instead cover them with mulch (allowing for protection as well as aeration) I'm not sure how true that is but it would explain why the roots keep coming up. Also, older more established trees have roots showing above ground. Any thoughts?
@IVOrganic6 жыл бұрын
Hello Jennifer McGolrick, GREAT points!!! You are correct with everything you wrote above... I briefly discussed the surface roots and to not cover / smother the underlying air-roots. However, in this situation, the products being used are breaking down around the plant... and with each watering exposing more and more of the roots. Garys Best soil products is based on the principle that soil (both in ground and potting) should consist of mostly mineral parts, and 5% or less living parts (including compost). I've touched upon this lesson here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWWym3WknLR5pc0 There will be many more lessons on this point this year! Stay tuned!!! Wishing you a GREAT week! Charles :-)

IV Organic Ooooohhhhhh I see. I'm planning to ammend the food forest with lots of coconut coir, charged biochar, and compost. Is the charcoal considered part of that 5% or just the compost and coir?
@IVOrganic6 жыл бұрын
Hello Jennifer, Charcoal, being derived from tree, would be considered part of the 5% (or less) of the organic matter found in a healthy garden. I'll go into much more detail by May/ June. Charles :-)

I just up-potted both Black Mission cuttings, they grew great but for some reason the Kadota cuttings leafed out and refused to root and eventually died. 😢 Thanks again for the cuttings and the videos.
@IVOrganic6 жыл бұрын
Hello Albert Einsteinian, Even if you did everything right, there is always a chance that some will fail. And see the loss as an opportunity to make a Kadota fig cutting root next year.... Or, if you can find a local tree, consider doing the air layering method taught in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIDNl2qCoc6Do68 Otherwise, be sure to write us at Info@IVOrganics.com that last week of January with "fig" in the subject line, your address in the body of the e-mail, and feel free to request the variety of fig(s) you would like for us to send to you. Keep me posted on your Black Mission Fig growing successes!!! Charles :-)
