Carolyn, My husband passed away from a massive Heart Attack almost a year ago. No second income to help pay for all those past life things. I have been watching your channel for years. I had been boon docking periodically in my $6000 camper / our pickup. I being almost 70 had lived a frugal life style ( I thought) all of our 46 years of married. But now I can tell you I fully understand and appreciate your video today. It really stated the real world views to our life style. This video was excellent and to the point, most importantly, the most honest down to earth video I think I have ever seen on any channel. Truthfully sometimes it is not a choice, but a solid life decision. That’s me. Thank you again.

I live in a tiny shed home of 120 sq feet off grid with a loft. I use solar for energy, I bring in water in jugs, my heat is a Mr Buddy propane heater and my showers are at the YMCA. I am on 2 acres in the woods. I still do travel in my van with my dog, but I am one of those people who need a home base. My rule is, if I bring something in, something has to go out. Since living this minimalistic lifestyle, my stress level has gone down quite a bit. Oh and I watch tv or whatever on a laptop. I don't have a TV.

My wife and I have a mobile home. She lives in it comfortably, while I live in a 100sf shed next to it. Why? I recently lost both legs in a hit and run, and am unable to get up the 5 stairs to the house. But we are happy. I made my shed to be a man-cave, with insulation, heat, A/C, power, Internet and TV. We spend time together everyday. I’m converting the shed to be ‘off-grid’ slowly, with solar power, and a Jackery, a DC fridge, and a camping toilet. Our bills? About $750/month, and if I get a van soon, I could easily install all of this, into the van, and hit the road :) That’s my plan eventually! I ❤ your videos!

Can't wait until I can get to that point. I could do it today if it wasn't for my "Super Consumer" of a husband. Weekly purchases from Amazon for things he doesn't need. His justification: "I work hard so I'm going to buy what I want." It's disheartening when you're a minimalist, married to a spend thrift.

Respectfully, I feel like it's very out of touch to think that any average person could have an emergency fund of $10,000 when most people can't even make a living wage. I think it's also good to keep in mind that some people get into this lifestyle because things have already gone very wrong and traditional living is not working for them.

Can't do a lot of things but to breathe fresh air, listen to the wind and birds in the trees, think, be by myself, etc., makes my life worth living. I'm joyful. And yes, SSI isn't much but I do it. No RV but my van is just fine. Not worried about appearance other than clean (in a different sense than at least a shower a day before). Thank you for helping others take a true look at their lives. Keep being you, Carolyn! There are many of us out here who appreciate what you're doing and your brutal honesty about it. Thanks for sharing the photos of how you and your life used to be, it really emphasizes the contrast and how you took control of your own life in the pursuit of real happiness and well-being. My big "want weakness" that I keep struggling with is everything related to my creative endeavors. I turned 90% of my house into a craft room over a decade ago and the thought of not having all those tools and supplies readily available just hurts my brain. Seriously, I have a drill press, a bench grinder, and a chop saw in my spare bedroom. LOL! I keep thinking I need to just pick ONE lightweight craft to bring on the road with me, like maybe watercolor painting or jewelry making, but I'm "random spirit" for a reason...my creative urges are very random. I would quickly get bored if I only had one creative outlet. (Especially as someone with physical limitations who can't fill the void with long hikes and exploring...). The obvious solution would be to just have a rig big enough to bring it all along...but I don't want that big-rig payment. I want a little cargo trailer or camper I can tow behind my paid off mid-sized truck. It's a quandary. LOL

Well, I'm in a sticks and stucco home but one thing I do is to start with real food. Luckily, with a good freezer, I can make soups and freeze them for quick meals. All those veggies that are getting soft but still good, a protein - I like quinoa, seasonings and usually water. Saves me $$ on lunches, cuz a pot of soup is probably less than an entire loaf of bread and so much more flavorful. We also use water very sparingly and rarely shop for much - sheets get holy, get a new set or just the bottom one. need a new shirt - check thrift stores first and take 2 in for each one you're going to buy. I cut my own hair, don't buy wine anymore (that $ a month now goes to ACLU) stuff like that. There are lots of things one can give up - is it need or greed is my first question. Great video Carolyn.

Great video! I have simplified life after stepping away from corporate management. I was making a third of what I had been and was so much happier. At age 58 I had an opportunity to semiretire and took it. I worked when I wanted to may e 40 hours a month because I loved what I did. I have paid for my own health insurance for the last 7 years from an account I marked just for that purpose so all 7 years were basically prepaid. I did that instead of getting a new car. Sooooo worth it! Every time I think about a new car (I drive a 2005) I ask myself if I want to go back to work fulltime to pay for it…well that is a hell no. Living with less should be a mandatory highschool class. 😊

Thank you for this video. You and Bob Wells inspired me 5 or 6 years ago. It took a year to part with the many pairs of shoes, expensive clothes, and my other “ stuff”. I bought a new Sprinter van paid it off in two years. I urban boon docked for the most part as I worked remotely part time. The only modifications I made to a plain cargo van were a bed, insulation ( no finished walls) a diesel heater, and a venting fan. I used Walmart plastic drawers and a long folding table as a counter top. Living in my van proved to be a real eye opener: I came to understand needs vs wants, started setting my own standards, I discovered what really matters, and what self actualization means. I’ve never been more liberated and truly content in my entire life. In addition I saved over $40k and increasing my savings monthly. I’m finally enjoying inner peace. I’m grateful to you and Bob Wells influencing me. Love both your channels. As I See It is a must watch for me. I think that the recent political hoopla has impacted its growth. Congratulations! I have a travel trailer but didn't take it out this year but will next summer. Many people head south during the winter months but I like our cold and snowy winters. I still volunteer (40 years later) butchering meat for those who can't ford to purchase it. That too brings a lot of joy and we have such a good group doing this. I also help my rancher friends when it is time to work cows. Glad I can still do these things at 75 but watch out, next year I have places I want to go and things I want to see!

As an RVer who has Boondocked most of her 20 years on the road, I think your information is very factual and helpful. But I would like to mention a couple of things. You said that if you want to use RV parks it’s going to cost a little more. I think it’s going to cost much more. For instance, even staying at an Elks Lodge averages at $25/night plus the annual membership. Forest service campgrounds prices have increased, and BLM and Corps of Engineer prices have also gone up in many cases. Plus, they are starting to require reservations. I also think you should address medical costs and being prepared for when you retire from the road. At some point, you will need medical and possibly want or need to hang up your keys. How do you address these issues?

I travel on trips that take 10-18 days at a time. I don't stay at any one place for more than a day so most of my costs are gas. On average I spend about $100 a day to cover all my costs. I put away a very nice nest egg to cover my travel costs so it does not impact our regular budget. If something were to happen to my wife, I think I would leave the sticks and bricks and hit the road. When I am on the road, it's such a different life. So relaxing and so enjoyable.

It's not just Americans who seem to come into the world "wanting" everything. Trust me, we come up "wanting" or thinking we are entitled to everything over here in the UK as well.

I couldn’t find it.

I've traveled a lot during my life. When I retired it was time to settle down. Living in a solar equipped 40' 5th wheel RV that I paid cash for on my own few acres a mile up the side of a mountain that I paid cash for next to my creek that pumping water from, growing most of my own food. My only expenses are $100 a year road fee for snow removal & pot hole filling & $177 a year property taxes. Own my car outright, cheap car insurance twice a year, maintenance & gas totally within my control since I only leave my land maybe once a month to pick up odd groceries. Yes emergency funds are a must bc things break down. My only issue is that I can't have a mailing address assigned to my property bc I don't have a county approved dwelling. There are ways around that tho. No biggie. I wouldn't trade it for anything!

I’m curious what to do for an address other than using a friend or family members address specifically for a drivers license. Any ideas? Oregon won’t let you use a paid box or anything like that.

How does someone get started?? Apartment life is almost out of reach these days. I don’t want homeless situations to come up as never had that. But i live in colder areas!

It's not just making yourself attracted to men, it's also competing with other women, because in my experience I had a bad enough time with men but women can be much worse, anyway when I finally decided that I was done trying to put on an image and spending thousands of dollars trying to put on an image, life became much simpler, but in some ways it became a lot harder because you are treated much differently buy people, and that is hard to get used to

What about retirement? Are you saving toward that time, paying into Social Security, etc. Health issues that can happen as you age? Plans for what you would do if you have to come off the road?

For a Plan B there's no shame in dying in your RV.

Here in northern New Jersey we 160.00 a month for a 1999 Toyota car it's ridiculous. And we pay 3650 a month for rent.

I love you just the way you are. I agree with you about being just who you are and if people don’t like the way you or you motorhome looks then they don’t have to watch you. I find you interesting and love listening to you. My husband and I are going to sell our house and go in our Motorhome around and see what we can see. We have been planning this for several years. We are learning what we need and what we don’t need. We are excited to go explore. What do you do for health insurance?

Wow, glad you woke up and ditched the patriarchal rule book. I was working for a logging company, "bucking" logs and driving the log truck to the mill and one guy made the comment "she'd look good if she cleaned up". Hahaha! As if he was dressed for an office job.

You've pretty much said all I would do. Plus some things I haven't thought about. I will say that money doesn't buy happiness, but it does buy freedom. The people who just work and spend, never find happiness or freedom.

Probably the biggest thing for me was that once again my entertainment became almost exclusively reading books. Often you can get discarded books from libraries for free or at a fraction of the list price and sometimes thrift shops sell used books, too.
