For the Top 12 one-shot quali, they go out in order of their championship position for example: 1st goes out 1st since they are the leader(and most likely to have the quickest car) and the lowest ranked driver that got into the top12 goes out last. Basicly the faster cars get "nerfed" by having the least amount of track evolution and the slower cars get "buffed" with having the most track evolution. Then during the race the faster cars will have to either overtake via strategy or actually going for a bold move which is a risk/reward-factor if they want more points.

And btw. cars need to start getting smaller again, not only for the sake of Monaco but for the sake of many other tracks as well
@blueredlover10602 жыл бұрын
At bare minimum they need to get thinner. The current F1 cars are closing in something like 1.5 meters (5ish ft). Maybe you can force them down to 1.2 meters or so. Thin out the width to allow for passing. Because I get the feeling the current aero rules will eventually have the teams getting even wider to compensate for the lack of effects off the cars. Idk of you could shorten the cars, but you should be able to thin them down. Maybe you would if you took the NASCAR fueling approach and mandated a limit on fuel cell size giving a stop to refuel, but that's honestly dumb.
@shadowmancy91832 жыл бұрын
@@blueredlover1060 I've heard that they're targeting a smaller and lighter car for 2026, and allowing refueling would help with that goal. Adding another layer of strategy is always nice as well- there's no predicting how much fuel someone put in their car at the start, so they might be loaded to go the full race with tires only, or they might've taken 1/4 tank to start on softs, planning for a two-stop with fuel each time. I don't want to force refueling, but it should be an option, and with it allowed, the whole debate about finishing under SC/VSC/Red Flag can be solved very quickly- neutralize the field, allow everyone to pit for fuel only, then a GWC as needed to the end. If there's one thing F1 could/should take from NASCAR, it's the overtime racing rules.

@garchompy_15612 жыл бұрын
on layout changes, there are definately places where the track can be widened. the pavements that are there could also easily be sunk in to the ground flush with the road surface in a lot of places allowing the track to extend further (such as the ENTIRE uphill section, downhill hairpin, and a few other places) . it may result in some lower traction parts around the edges where the asphalt becomes smooth brick, but if drivers can drop a wheel on the grass in a quick move they can do it there too. in terms of the rest of the track, id honestly like to see a return to the original layout (or closer to it at least) in some places. if you want a longer straight, go back to pre-addition of the pool section. out of the chicane after the tunnel, then a massive sweeping corner all the way to a hairpin on to the start-finish straight, alternatively you move the start-finish on to that long sweeping corner and then you give an incentive for ridiculous moves on that chicane, which would also let you change the layout on the old start-finish straight to bring back some more corners and remove the akwardness of T1.

@duranvt38562 жыл бұрын
There are some problems with one shot qualifying. track evolution and weather. Your argument is that the conditions is already different in the normal qualifying format, but I think that’s different. If people go out too late or too early because weather changes, it’s something the team could’ve prevented and there is strategy needed to counter for example rain after a dry start. If you do one-shot qualifying, it’s all luck when you start a session and when you go out on track in good conditions. If it has rained before the qualifying session, it would mean that Latifi would go even further in the back and the gaps between the first place and second place will get bigger aswell. This would make qualifying not fun too watch and it will cause a lot of controversy. The best solution for fixing that is to make drivers go on track and drive their only lap very close behind the other cars, but in Monaco there is no room for that. You know, both versions of qualifying aren’t perfect, but if I had to choose which one I would go for, I would choose the normal system. Even though it will be dangerously busy on track, the session is more about strategy and skill, instead of skill and luck

If you look at the bigger picture of the entire City there is much more room to expand the track outside of the current track limits. The harbour section can be expanded, the upper section around the casino square can also be extended. They need to tweak the track layout to make the track longer.
I've thought about the roundabout many times. What I would do on the track is remove the sidewalk on the left of the first turn's braking zone, so drivers don't have to turn the wheel when braking. (There would be enough space to walk there anyway) Between turn 1 and Portier, there is nothing to do. I would also put the roundabout in the circuit. Longer track by 20 meters and better accelerating into the tunnel. And the key to have drs in the tunnel is to cut a little bit the turn in the tunnel, so it would not be that dangerous with drs. It is expensive, but neccessary. So now we have a longer track by 20 meters, better accelerating and drs. That makes the chicane a good overtaking zone and there would be no need to move the chicane back. The next thing what I would do is steal some space from the sea and make turn 13, 14 almost completely straight. Turn 15, 16 would not be on the place where it is now. The track would keep going on the part where there is grandstand now, and there would be a left-right chicane before turn 18. Some space from the sea would be needed for that, but it is possible. The last change on the track would be the removing of turn 19 and make it a flat out, so there would be more speed on the main straight and it makes turn 1 a better overtaking zone. And as I said turn 1 is even changed a little bit for overtaking. I would hold two practices on Thursday, Friday would be free. On Saturday morning there would be the first qualifying. 10 drivers first, 10 drivers after. In the afternoon there would be the fast-12 just like Tommo said. I would not make the Monaco GP a 2 times pit stop race. What I would do is make the Monaco GP also 305 kilometers long, just like every single race in the calendar. It would be a long race, but come on... It's Monaco. In the past it was 100 laps long with slower cars. That 305 km distance would make the teams change tires two times anyway. It is 260 kms now and 78 laps. That 305 kms would be 92 laps, so then why shouldn't we complete 100 laps?! Of cource the 2 hour race limit and the 3 hour event limit would be off in Monaco. Let's make Monaco as great as Le Mans and Indy 500. Monaco deserves to be a great race in the triple crown. (Sorry if I wasn't clear somewhere. English is not my mother tongue.)

I feel like some sort of quali format akin to the MotoGP qualifying could work in Monaco. Split the quali groups using aggregate time of the FP sessions, then the top 2 in Q1 could progress into Q2. It limits cars on track whilst also encouraging the drivers in Q1 to push for Q2. That could work no?

I think Monaco could take some inspiration with our (Aussies) Bathurst 1000 The whole grid has a 1 long qualifying session (30-45mins I reckon) and then the top 10 go for broke in a shoot out for pole, with the other drivers 11 downwards retaining their order from the large qualifying session. The way the Bathurst 1000 have their top 10 shoot out setup is nothing short of exhilarating. 1 car getting full coverage completing their lap, but! Whilst their on the 2nd half of the track coming to an end of the lap, the next car is already on track warming their tires and preping so that when the 1st car finished the coverage pans straight to the next car seconds before they start their lap. No ads or unnecessary breaks in the broadcast, just straight action the whole way through the shoot out (unless there's a crash of course)

I like your top 12 shootout idea. I'm from Australia and this shootout idea is what we use for our biggest race in Australia called the Bathurst 1000. the top 10 shootout is crazy to watch and I think the shootout idea would be brilliant for f1.

Cool video with some interesting ideas although I think chain bear also made a video and also suggested some changes that I'd prefer tbh

I like the idea of a split for initial qualifying. A Bathurst-style top 10 shootout would also do very well as you implied. Yes, #10 to #1 depending on previous times. Each driver would be on the track about 6 minutes but you can overlap out and in laps. If all runs smoothly you get about 35 minutes of shootout. As for track layout changes, seems fine to me. Just sell a confiscated Russian mega-yacht and you have the funds to relocate the chicane. ;->

Spa and Monza are so great because they have historical value AND are an amazing racing track. Monaco literally just has historic value.

Great ideas tommo. Quaily format would be cool. Move the chicane also would be great. Id like to see them open up floor designs and make the cars smaller. Like 85% of the current size. The point of ground effect is to create the downforce from the floor so we have less aero wash, so let the teams develop better floors!

Honestly just building more harbour would help a lot. Could easily make the track wider, the chicane would work much better if it was a little bit wider. Tabac and the swimming pool section could be made quicker and end up with heavier breaking for the final few corners

Quali definitely needs some sort of change for Monaco. I am happy with a one-shot job, but I think that the FE quali could spice it up a little, with the "duel" format. But they're still essentially alone, at least during their runs. I am not in favour of DRS appearing in the tunnel. It's a safety issue, especially with the modern cars which can run even closer. But a few track changes would be a good thing. Chainbear did an interesting video on just that subject (iirc it was only that, but it complements this video really well). Tbh, despite Graham Hill's last ever race at Monaco being the first one I have any memory of (and that in "snapshots"), I wouldn't miss it.

I like the idea of 2 mandated stop through all races then we can have tyres that they can push on
@OVmoney5 ай бұрын
Slight adjustment: have an A and B group for Q1 but let the teams decide which car is in which group that way you add a bit of tire strategy, intrigue, and F1 commentary to those that believe in track evolution.

One thing I feel that would bring back some hype to Monaco is a mandatory throwback livery doesn’t matter if the team has been around for ages like Ferrari or are newer like Haas all they have to do is work with the sponsors and choose an era of cars other than cars post 2010 and make a cool livery for the race as a one off

Personally, Monaco needs a new street circuit track layout. The roundabout is a good idea, but I think it needs a complete new track layout on different streets of Monaco but hey I think your suggestions are better than mine Tommo

They should add a joker lap(s), that adds in more strategy and intrigue.

Supercars do that qualifying for Bathurst . The top ten shoot out is a highlight of the weekend . Its a little different as the main qualifying is done on Friday then the top ten shoot out is Saturday so it gives the teams time to alter the car . But still ,, it’s exciting
@walterclements79682 жыл бұрын
with qualifying i'd say do it 50/50 based on the standings in the WDC. Builds up the tension as the fastest drivers are later. There will have to be a long enough break so that the track is not warmer for the better drivers to make it easier for them
@pablohabibefigueiredo71425 ай бұрын
Your idea (add the roundabout + moving the nouvelle chicane) is great. I believe the chicane could be moved way more ahead. There is a lot of space behind it for safety...
@jagadishtsgowda2 жыл бұрын
I would say qualifying in general can be improved by making slight modification to your idea. 2 groups of 10 cars race around in 2 different slots and separate the top 5 and bottom 5 from each group. The bottom 10 now fight in a session to find the order in P11-P20, and top 10 will fight for order in P1-P10. Total 4 sessions may be 10mins each. It will be exciting and even teams ending up in P11-P20 will make some effort to stay as higher as possible And track evolution is also somewhat taken care of

Alternative to your "extend the straight to the chicane", perhaps remove the fairmont hairpin. I feel like it puts cars in single-file which doesn't help with the run down to the chicane. The unfortunate downside is that looking on google maps, there's no easy way to do this. Ideally though, you'd have the right hander of mirabeau that would be less of a right-hander as it goes straight for the right-hander before the tunnel. Could also be interesting with the elevation change being somewhat substantial. Additionally, since mirabeau would become a kink rather than a hard turn, that straight effectively becomes longer and could become another overtaking spot...

There is ONE THING in the Monaco transmission that is great, since there is little space the camera's are put higher and you have a better angle to see the track, normally the camera is almost parallel to the track and you can't see what's going on

Firstly I recommend watching Chain Bears video on this topic, he also had some good ideas. I think that Monaco, to remain 'special', needs to be a special one off annual event in the middle of the season, rather than a standard race, given the trouble with overtaking. Maybe something like a time trial challenge. Another place which I think the track could be changed is between the swimming pool section and rasscasse. If you remove the second chicane at the swimming pool, because its slow and clunky and the run up to rasscasse is just 1 car wide, then swap the grandstand over to what is currently the track and have the cars run where the grandstand is now, then you get a quick run out of the first part of swimmimg pool with a straight down to rasscasse where someone following may be able to make a move in the braking. I would also like to see more of an interactive element in F1 generally with the cameras. You should be able to splitscreen so you get the broadcast cameras on one part and maybe also have up to 3 other cameras on the go too, so you can pick and choose what action you want to watch at any point

I added my comment before the ending of the video, I do love the changes you’ve made, Perhaps the roundabout change and my suggested restructure of the harbour so we can have a proper overtaking opportunity with plenty of space to make a move and less collision risk

As for the track changes themselves, I like the sound of those as well but I imagine safety becomes a factor with all of them. It's tricky carrying so much speed through such tight, narrow streets, a potential accident waiting to happen with the lack run off available on the circuit.
@MalloryMinerva2 жыл бұрын
Here's an idea: go with the roundabout idea from the video, but also abolish the nouvelle chicane, that way you have a properly lengthy straight, with a DRS zone. That way, you get DRS overtakes.
@_Razpberrie2 жыл бұрын
For qualifying they should do like a shoot out where every driver goes out alone and has one chance to set a lap. Base the order on championship position. Its good for sponsorship as well because every car has full lap coverage and adds some unpredictability and higher stakes by only having one chance.
@crazycoasterboi81762 жыл бұрын
I think a one shot quali could work here and at sprint race weekends. I think if they gave each driver two shots at a lap (reduce mixed up grid from mistakes). Then once one driver crosses the line, the next one is sent on their warmup lap to reduce time between laps Ex: Lap one: Tsunoda warm up Lap two: Tsunoda flying lap Lap three: Tsunoda cooldown and Stroll Warmup Lap four: Stroll flying lap Etc
@D_4_N_2 жыл бұрын
in 1 shot qualy, could send them out in reverse championship table order, with the leader going out last. makes being ahead in points pay dividends by giving a slight track evolution advantage.
@ENW082 жыл бұрын
two-group split qualifying isnt just the indy 500, its all of indycar. on road courses they run two groups, then the fastest 6 of of each group move on to round 2, then the remaining top 6 shoot out for pole in round 3. its a great format and real fun to watch honestly the groups are decided by the drivers’ final times in practice 3. even positions one group, odds the other, and the fastest practice 3 driver decides which group goes first
@derosiflo65242 жыл бұрын
more artificial land is being built above the ocean before the tunnel. maybe it'd be possible to extend the track to there (basically instead of your roundabout-extension idea). ofc depending on what buildings there are, if the safety measures can be applied, if it'll be big enough etc. A classic hairpin would work to make another hard braking point maybe
@bpinsf2 жыл бұрын
Ditch the Nouvelle Chicane entirely and continue the straight all the way to Tabac. Start without DRS, but if there isn't passing, add a zone starting at the exit of the tunnel with the detection point at the beginning of the tunnel.
