We're not too proud to admit we get emotional when Mira talks about the importance of making room in her lessons for people at all levels of ability and ambition, because we know there are so many out there who are afraid, and just waiting for a kind soul to invite them to join in! I think the checkerboard really elevated that page from well placed, design happy doodles to picnic illustration. Both are lovely but you were absolutely right about the background tying it together. I think I'd go even further and make it plaid, cause I like plaid ^-^

You have inspired me to take up drawing again, I gave up after I had my first baby but it’s been 3 years and all my art stuff got shoved in a closet and watching your videos has inspired me to pull them all back out and enjoy the process. You are genuinely the sweetest person ever. For a fellow Stylehopper (or, in my case, Hobbyhopper 😂), it can often feel daunting to try new things or push yourself that little bit further because often the examples we see are of people who aren't hoppers. They have spent years or even most of their lives practising and improving that one style or skill and have become amazing at it. Comparing your own fledgling attempts to someone who has fallen in love with a particular aspect, eg, charcoal portraits, photorealism/hyperrealism - are they the same thing? ‐ screenprinting or oil painting, etc, (and that's just sticking under the general "art" umbrella!) can be devastating to your confidence, but your sketchbook ideas videos always find a balance between skill and confidence of all levels. It's one of the reasons I am enjoying Fluid Art/Acrylic Paint Pouring at the moment (despite its devastating effect on my bank account, lol!😂) No matter how long people have been doing it, there's no guarantees that it will end up looking good. I can't remember if you tried acrylic pouring before (you must have, right), but if not/if it's been a while, I would definitely recommend it. While I remember (sorry! This comment is super long already!) I meant to ask you a couple of questions. The first one is art related - would it be possible for you to do a fairly in‐depth tutorial on how you paint such realistic water with acrylics? I absolutely adore how you do it, and I would love to be able to do a really moody, atmospheric, stormy ocean water painting (not your usual style, I know, but I figure the basic principle can be applied to different colours etc to create different ocean waves). Every time I have tried, though, it always seems to come out stiff and unnatural, instead of having that movement and flow. The second one (and then I will stop waffling, I promise! 😂) was actually about your other hobby, board games. You mentioned being a big Wingspan fan - have you tried it with the app thing that plays all the different bird calls? I thought that was pretty cool. Have you and hubby played Journeys through Middle Earth at all? It's really awesome and mixes little mini-figures and a co-op campaign based on the world of Tolkien, and it's a bit like the 'choose your own adventure' books/games, but on an app for a laptop/tablet etc. If you guys are Lord of the Rings fans, as well as enjoying your D&D, I think you'd really love it!

I'm a portrait-ish people! I actually tagged you in my latest painting where I did a portrait of a fictional girl that is kind of similar with boarder breaking and hydrangea leaves and flowers popping out all around her in 3D! Hi, sherylann. We don't need talent to draw. We already do, from babyhood. It's only as we get older that we begin to think that we can't draw because at school we have to 'follow the rules', and we begin to compare our art with others' art. *Suggestions follow* We begin with random scribbles with random colour, and have fun. Then we begin to make shapes, and recognisable forms begin to appear - Mummy, Daddy, other people, appear as stick people, houses as rectangles and a triangle on top. It's brilliant stuff, and it's fun! And then we see what others do and the pressure is there. Oh, my word, how the pressure is there!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *So here's a game suggestion for you.* Go back to those early days. grab a piece of paper (printer paper is fine for this). Tape it to a piece of board (back of a chopping board perhaps?) so it doesn't move (just the four corners will be fine). Close your eyes and grab a few coloured pencils (children's crayons will do). With eyes still closed, put those random colours on the table beside you. Now, eyes still closed, take a pencil, and just make shapes on the paper. Scribble a few zigzags, circles, curves, whatever comes into your mind. It doesn't matter if you go off the edges of the page. Next, open your eyes and see what's there! It's a totally unique piece of abstract art! It's brilliant! Next, repeat the game from the beginning, but this time, when you open your eyes, place the random coloured pencils into a bag of some sort (no, you can't change the colours!!!) , where you can put your hand in and take one without seeing which it is. Use that colour to fill in some of the spaces. Then put it aside and take another colour (no, you are _not_ allowed to put it back for another one! ) and colour a few more shapes. Then put that one aside, and take out another colour to fill in the rest. Now you have yet another completely unique, colourful work of art. You didn't even need to think about it, You just did it. The thing is, we can all draw. We can all make colourful marks on a piece of paper, which is all drawing actually is. _It doesn't matter what it looks like to others so long as we enjoyed doing it!!!_ This may surprise you: When I'm out doing plein air, folk come by and some stop to chat. They look through my sketchbook (watercolour or pencil) and the things they stop to look at the longest and ask the most questions about are my 'play pieces' - just like the ones above, or paint dropped onto wet paper and allowed to travel across it to blend with other colours. Masking fluid randomly applied with a ruling pen across the page, and again, paint dropped in and allowed (encouraged!) to spread across the paper across the lines to blend. Dry before the amazing part - taking off the masking fluid and seeing just how beautiful it is. 'Failed' drawings which I've turned into comedy pieces by adding eyes, nose, mouth, maybe a hat, maybe a scarf, maybe legs.. Blobs of paint mix (as when testing out a mix for a painting, or scribbled coloured pencil to check a colour) which I've drawn around to produce faces, trees, cupcakes, houses, trucks... whatever the shape suggests to me. I turn the paper round if I can't see it one way up, so the 'drawings' are right way, upside down or sideways on the page. They like my 'skilled' art work, but it's these random, fun pages that they ask all the questions about, and which make them smile, and encourage them to have a go themselves. Ok, so I'm telling you all (well not quite all, it'd take too long!) of my 'secrets', but hey, why not? If it encourages you to have fun and experiment, and grow your excitement and confidence, why not? The first step in any artist's 'journey' is so rarely discussed. I've just covered it in a couple of fun games. _It's the absolute necessity for a beginner to learn to_ *PLAY* _with their tools,_ to get to know them, to get to know themselves - what makes them smile, feel at ease to use, which pencil felt most comfortable in the hand, which brush makes the best marks for each thing, which colours do they naturally reach for...how do they see this, or that, or something else.... We can only learn without being daunted by all the rules, regulations, expectations, by *PLAY* , experimenting, just having fun - pure and simple *FUN* and forgetting about what anyone else thinks. Who cares what they think? At one time, I thought the folk who stopped by would think those play times things childish. They don't!!!! Without fail they love them!!!! And they walk away with big, happy smiles, or very thoughtful faces, and then I know I've done my job - encouraging them to see things differently, and maybe even have a go themselves. And that's sooo rewarding for me! Ok, lesson over. Hope it helped in some way? If not you, then maybe someone else who was curious enough to read to the end.
