I’ve had the sponge in my gutter for several years with no clogs, not problems. I do have to knock a layer of dry leaves off the top each year or so, but that’s much easier than digging out the whole gutter.

Best gutter guard review I've seen yet. I just checked gutters for a customer. She had a woven black flexible mesh installed by some scoundrel a few years ago. All of the big stuff like the Sweetgum spikey balls and leaves and sticks were just sitting on top. Very little water was actually getting through. Her gutters were totally clogged with some of the finest mulch I've ever seen! In addition to that, the mesh actually served as a lovely hanging garden of Babylon inside of the gutter. I was literally scooping out handfuls of the stuff along with sheets of moss. Thanks for the great info.

I've used the white plastic with holes, not the most durable, but they worked really well. The way you tested it had it angled down 45 degrees, so of course the water is going to pour right off. If you keep it closer to the 5ish degrees it would actually sit on a gutter, it would perform a lot different than shown.

Great video. I hit the 3rd ones. Had for years. The main thing with allll the thin plastics is they will turn concave after awhile, as your shingles shed that piles up in that curve area now sinking it more. Plus the cracks always get clogged with helicopter seeds and leaves. Horrible....

Leaves and debris being in gutters matters less if you keep your downspouts from clogging at the top. Use large downspouts and even wider downspout openings in a funnel shape where it attaches to the gutter which is where most clogs happen. Keep that water flowing right there and heavy downpours will flush a lot of leaves and debris right down. A lot of leaves will remain but water will usually keep flowing enough and avoid overflows.

I installed gutter stuff 3 years ago and it works for my needs. All it needs to do is allow leaves and stuff to blow away instead of settling into the gutter and to let water flow through, all of which it does well. I removed it once in the Summer, let it dry, shook out the sand and other particle debris that gets into the foam and put it right back in. I recently pulled it out with the intent to replace it with new stuff, but guess what? It looks fine! I'm going to put it right back. Cheap and DIY.

At Mr. Gutters where I work in Mass I climb up and down ladders all day long doing either repairs or install and cleanings. Worst part is they fall apart after only 2 years. The pipe cleaner protectors are even worse....

All gutters should be installed at a very slight downslope toward the downspout. If you are in heavy snow and ice country, the outer edge of the gutter should be in line with the slope of the roof, especially if the roof has slick metal roofing. If a slab of frozen iced snow slides it may tear the gutter off of the fascia.

I was called to a job where they had the brush type system installed. The brush was so built up with moss that the water was jumping over the gutter and running down the outside wall!. It caused damage to internal decorating and carpet. My advice is don't bother with any of these products just clear your gutters after the leaves fall. The brushes also greatly reduce the capacity of the gutters causing them to overflow in heavy downpours.

I own a gutter maintenance business in northern California, and the most common gutter guards I see up here are the (relatively) cheap Amerimax vinyl guards you can buy at Home Depot or Lowe's; and they are absolutely terrible. They work for about a year, maybe two, because they have larger holes than the plastic ones shown here, with a mesh that goes over the top. The mesh only lasts one season though and it's gone. After that, the gutters fill right up with debris almost like they weren't even there; then you have to take them off to clean them.

I installed the sponge types and they appeared to be working great. They've been up for about 4 years and I always see the water draining out the drain pipe during heavy rains. After watching this I thought I would do a test. So I got up to the lower level gutters and poured a large quantity of water into it very quickly. The water went right through even though there was quite a few pine needles on top. No water back up whatsoever and the water drained right out the bottom spout. I'll check them every year but for now it appears to be working. I would suggest doing such a test before ripping them all out.

Plants may have not had time to grow yet or maybe you have plants that do not produce seeds that would ever grow in the sponge, but I am sure you have trapped moisture. This is bad for any gutter and will lead to the gutters leaking and possibly rusting much sooner than they should. The purpose of a gutter is to channel water when it is raining, but stay dry with it is not. Be sure you check them! - Brent Simmons

I plan on using the Gutterstuff for the intended purpose of "filtering". It's not advertised as a gutter guard. I am going to use it on my woodshed to perform an initial filtration of the debris that might exist. The gutter will be approximately 7-feet from the ground, which means no ladder is required for my application. The gutter will be used to collect water for my rain harvesting IBC container. I will still have a secondary filtration before going into the IBC, but this is an easy way of reducing the sediment that might make it to the secondary filtration. I will be removing media during the winter season.

There is something to be said for the cheap plastic ones with triangular holes and a mesh cover. I have a 1 story house in the south - with next to no ice. However, there are 3 types of trees that over hang my house. 1) Live oak trees, that have a small leaf and shed in the spring. 2) Elm trees with a small leaf that shed in the fall, and 3) "cedar" or juniper trees that shed fine debris year round. Just about ALL systems fail in this situation within several years. I have to get up on my roof 6 times a year to clean out gutters without a gutter guard. The cheap plastic ones with triangular holes have these advantages: 1) They actually work to some degree. Instead of getting up on my roof 6 times a year, I only have to get up on my roof 1 time a years to blow off debris - there is no gutter clear out I need to do. 2) They are cheap - $100 bucks covers the house, 3) they are easy to put in and take out - no screws so when they do fail - replacement is easy - which they all fail on this house. After 3 years 80 percent of mine are still good. That has saved me 15 trips up on the roof. Why would I spend big money on something that IS going to fail?

Also any recommendations on installing gutters yourself when you don’t have enough room to place ladder to the house as I only have 5’ space to a 21’ gutters location. Should I be able to install gutters from the roof top or it isn’t recommended?

I like the foam,as the gutter guys used sheet metal screws, and a knife to score a x where the down spout goes ...leaves hang up on the screws, and clog,so the foam keeps this from happening, yes they still need some maintenance ,but they do allow water to flow thru, and under better than some of the expensive systems out there,I have enlarged some of the down spout holes, which also helps ,the sharp sheet metal screws, cut my hands so I prefer rivets

I've found a use for the sponge, need to fill in a hole in the center of 2 studs with patch compound, stuff the wall with this sponge material, add a paper top layer and fill your hole, this will take sevral layers and a patch kit to work. Or just cut out a chunk or drywall, or make a paint stir bridg to screw a chunk of drywall to. The sponge will be inside the wall and you'll never have to see it agine. My dad taught me a trick take cardbord larger then hole, put a string in the center fold it to fit into the wall put glue on it stuff into the wall and let it unfold, draw it up to the wall, so it sticks, after its dry stuff the string in the void, and fill with mud. Over the hold apply drywall tape and feather out.you can make the patch disappear if you dent in the drywall some around the hole.

There are many "levels" of filtration product out there, from no-warranty product at most of the big box stores and Costco, then 2 yr, 5 yr, 10 yr, 25 yr and lifetime warranty. Just depends on the quality of what you buy. If you buy the higher end product it works well. Not sure what was tested here but if it was a box store product probably zero warranty and a very cheap product. No gutter guard products are perfect, regardless of what they say; Mother Nature is very good at what she does and has many tricks up her sleeves.

I see a great deal of people supporting the less expensive products below. The bottom line is Aluminum or Stainless Leaf-Relief or other mesh style gutter screen will out perform the less expensive options in several ways. If you avoid ONE roof repair or service call of any kind, the more expensive system will have paid itself off. If you incur ONE service call because you chose a cheap product, you lost more money than if you would have just bought the more expensive stuff anyway. Anyhow, not saying the cheap stuff never works...but I would not put it on my house.

I have a spot where rain for a higher part of my roof falls to the lower part, and it causes a large amount of water to come down at one spot. That spot has an overflow splash guard but the amount of water is too much and what ends up happening is the water fills the gutter and goes behind the gutter to the facia board/roof line. The gutter is completely clear of debris. It is just too much water going to one spot. Is there a solution to this? My only tought is to place a downspout there eventhough it's not a good spot for one as it is near our porch. Would be nice if there was a product that you put on the roof to divert some of the water so it spreads more along the roof line, or something.

With you on this one. We get a lot of moss on our roof which rolled off into the gutter and blocked our drains before. Now it just bounces off the hedgehog onto the ground. Anything left will stick to the hedgehog and dry off in hot weather, so yeah it might be worth pulling out, shaking off and putting back once every year or 2 years but that's a hell of a lot quicker and easier than trying to scoop compacted stuff out of a gutter.

I need guards and I called LeafFilter. They came out and gave me a price of $8993 for 270' of guards. I looked at your video on line and also talked to a friend of mine who used them a year ago. I called them back and got them down to $4500. I asked him why would he give me a price of $9000 themn come back three hours later and give it to me at half the price. He said he has to keep his crews working and sometimes they can offer that price to keep them going. He said he wont make a profit and I told him that I was in business for 40 years and and his statement is not true. I am talking to a local company that sells Arrow systems and I will see what the price is.

They all say the same thing, the company tells you that they want to keep the installer working. But they try to make you feel guilty about the installer keeping their jobs. They did this when we got an estimate for windows.

They did the same thing to me, $8,500 first quote, $4,500 second quote after I asked them if they are gold plated. He called me back 3 hours later (after a call to his manager) and offered me his final offer of $2,500.. I told him to go pound sand!!

the gutter brush does seem slightly easier than just clearing out open gutters, the leaves don't get soggy and compact, in theory they should dry out on the end of the brush spikes then you can just pull the whole thing out at once. I get it, but why would you buy that when there's even better options?

I used the gutter brush's that I removed from clients gutters as a boot cleaner I had to fold several of them and screw them down to a board and they worked pretty good for a couple years (as boot cleaners) but eventually the bristles crack and break off. You can also bend and fold them to look like a Hedgehog if you want to make a cute garden ornament. Other than those helpful tips theyre not worth anything!

I should’ve bought mine from Costco. I had Leaf Filter installation a few years ago and got ripped off as they’re way overpriced. I had shoddy installers and had to have them corrected not once but THREE times and I still have sections of raised shingles and improperly pitched gutters (done by Leaf Filter). Even had a regional manager come out to review my concerns who stated “I don’t see any problems here”, so with that I told them to get off my property. Thanks for the roof edge damage that will be corrected when I eventually have the new roof installed.

The GutterStuff in your video is installed incorrectly. The side of the foam that should be on the front inside of the gutter was facing up. GutterStuff has a UV coating which is on the top side of the foam. The coating prevents it from breaking down as you mentioned. If the foam is installed correctly, it will not break down. Occasionally, debris will not get blown off by the wind and it will occur with any gutter guard. For GutterStuff, simply brush or spray it off and it will help it keep performing year after year. GutterStuff and GutterFill as shown in the video are two separate products. GutterStuff is the original foam filter, and will perform year after year when installed properly.

@@RoofingInsights3.0 You should address whether you installed them upside down or not. The UV is only on the exposed side. Ours have been in for 10 years and have held up. I bought them because at the time another "expert" had done an in deapth evaluation and they were by far the best bang for the buck. You are right about the ones from Costco working well if installed correctly.
