On July 31st 1970, in the small town of Price Utah, 4 year old Heidi wakes up to eerie silence, and after peeking through the keyhole of her bedroom door, she sees a terrifying scene that will stick with her forever: the tragic murder of her mother. However, no one is convicted, and before the case file is officially marked as unsolved, Heidi’s grandmother takes one last photo of her, standing in front of the outline: nobody could imagine that this photo would actually hide the key to solve the murder, which will only be done 46 years later.

@@lillianhoigard6702 , grief makes people behave in the strangest of ways. When my oldest daughter was 4, her father committed suicide. We had been together for seven years almost to the day, but he had not married me. His family was wealthy, and that made everything more complicated. I wasn't after their money, but I was in love with their son. I was 31at the time, and had let him know that if he didn't have any plans of keeping me, I was ready to move on with my life. I was. I loved him, but I'm no doormat. His family blamed me for his death, even though he was 6 miles away and 8 or 9 police officers witnessed him shoot himself. I called the police that morning, hoping to save somebody. He was angry with his father and had spoken of killing him, but was in therapy for his mental health. I knew something bad was about to happen, but I didn't know what. Up until the moment they told me he had taken his last breath, I did not expect it to end with him dead. His family was so angry with me that they sent me to the wrong church for his funeral. The one time I let our daughter stay with them, still only 4 years old, they tried to turn her against me. We had to move back to my home state of Indiana from California. After that I told them they could come see her where we live, but I would not be sending her to them alone after the damage they did the last time I gave them the benefit of the doubt. It wasn't about me at all, it was about my daughter. When she was 14, my dad took her to see them once. Again, they filled her head full of trash about me. These people had never checked to see if we were alright, they never did anything for her, and I never once asked them for a dime, even when we were struggling. My daughter has never been the same since that trip. She started showing symptoms of bipolar 1, just like her dad. She'll be 25 this month, is pregnant with her second child, and thank God for her husband. His mother lives with them and she has a phD in psychology. She has been in an out of inpatient psychiatric wards ever since, and she struggles with it daily. I don't blame them for her condition, despite that they may have triggered it. Her daddy was the second of three sons to die by their own hand, out of seven total children fathered by his dad, and they can't blame them all on me. I guess it's true what they say about grieving: you either get better or you get bitter. I chose better, they chose bitter. I wish them the best, sincerely. This case really touched my heart, bc Heidi was the same age as my daughter was when she lost her dad. It is so confusing to a child and it can cause a lifetime of emotional problems. It makes me happy to see her do well and find peace. I hope someday my daughter can find the same. Cheers!

Just because the grandma told Heidi to let go doesn't mean she did. She probably wanted her granddaughter to be happy and lead a normal life. Plus they dealt with things differently back then. Luckily things have gotten better at knowing how to handle trauma

I lost my mom 3 months after this happened. The grief never ends, and there is no such thing as closure. There are longer time periods where you don't think about your loss as time goes on. But it never leaves you. Not ever. Her mom died on my 7th birthday. 😢

There's no reason to believe that the grandmother didn't tell the police, since he was arrested at the time'. He was released because of a lack of evidence. The vague testimony of a 4 yo was probably deemed insufficient to go to trial. And I'm not sure what the police missed back then, either. At least one person remembered about the name written in blood, so it must have been known at the time, for instance.And the 10 yo recognized him, but there was no evidence that the man who tried to abduct her was the same who committed the murder three blocks away.

My Mom died when I was eleven and like Heidi's family none of the adults wanted to talk about her. It was like she just disappeared one day. Kids need someone to talk about the death of a close family member to. They need to be comforted and encouraged to remember good things about the deceased. Happy memories they had together, otherwise it takes a very long time to get over the death. I could not talk about my mother without crying until I was grown.

The pain of being forced to forget is something I hate Heidi felt. Mourning and grief are slippery, neverending slopes. Talking about your deceased loved one hurts, especially if they died unnaturally. But, coming from someone who was forced to forget; Don't stop talking about them. Even if it hurts, and you do more crying than talking. Even if you get angry, and if you can't remember much. Don't stop talking. Because while you still remember, young kids like Heidi genuinely forget. Young kids like I was genuinely forget, and we can't get those memories back.

What a 4 yo had seen was presumably not considered reliable enough to go to trial (assuming even that she was still remembering it and could testify, as the grandmother saying "my granddaughter said after the murder that it was Tom" would have been an hearsay). I guess that you think that she "didn't want justice" because she tried to discourage her granddaughter to focus too much on the crime? I assume that she thought that her granddaughter needed to move on, which doesn't strike me as necessarily bad advice. Doesn't mean that she didn't want justice for her daughter.

I think it would be harsh to say that; we don't know how the original case proceedings went. If she wrote down everything Heidi said-- who's to say she didn't bring it up as a secondhand witness? She must have, given that it was her daughter, and that she was so scrupulous in making sure that everything was documented. There simply wasn't enough to circumstantial evidence to go on in 1970, and that's why the murderer went unsentenced. It might have been rather difficult for the judge to try someone on the word of a four-year-old alone, looking through a keyhole no less. Afterall, it has to be 'beyond a reasonable doubt'.

A person's response to pain can differ: the grandmother tried to avoid it but clearly never moved on from it as it was too painful to mention both the loss and the failure to exact justice for her daughter, while Heidi sought to overcome it, no matter how long it took. There could be other considerations too, such as financial reasons for not pursuing the case, societal standards for women back when, old age, etc.

Her grandma probably scared when Tom attacked the wrong kid and feared for her granddaughter's safety. Hence why she kept telling her granddaughter to let go but still kept everything written down and collect every piece of news. Thankfully she kept the box and didn't throw it away. I guess she herself cannot let it go even though she adviced her granddaughter to do so.

Heidi seems like such a sweet woman. My heart breaks for her. Justice came very late in this case, but it's a relief that it has finally been solved. Things don’t add up I agree. They had him and then two little girls testimony wasn’t enough evidence that’s just fishy. The police/detective work looks really poor from them. And not sure what’s up with grandma, but by today’s standards and even then she was an accomplice in my eyes, even if she did fear for her granddaughters life, but they don’t give us all the information it was a limited video. She presumably informed the police, and presumably the police arrested the culprit on part on this basis. I assume that the testimony of a 4 yo wasn't considered enough to go to trial. During the second inquiry, they seem to have just rediscovered the evidences known at the time (what the daughter had seen from the grandmother's notes, the letters in blood from someone who remembered it...) and could have done nothing more than the first time if the culprit hadn't confessed.

The video seems to have confused people into believing that Heidi's testimony, or the letters in blood, weren't known by the police back then. It's not that. It's that since the files were missing, these evidences had to be rediscovered during the second inquiry. If some random person remembered the letters in blood, the police most certainly knew about them as well. If the grandmothers had noted down what Heidi said, she most certainly had informed the police as well.

I think it’s important for adults to encourage children to talk about the person they lost. Whether they have lost a family member through trauma, violence or just natural circumstances, staying quiet it the worse thing you can do. Talking about it helps the mind heal & keeps their loved ones memory alive & active their minds. Watching videos is another good way for kids to remember a parent, grandparent or sibling. It helps them remember how they looked or what they sounded like. When they are older as an adult, they will have vivid memories of their time together & will remember detail of things they did together.

Since someone who remembered it told the police, the letters in blood thing was known at the time, so the cops were aware of it back then. But two letters in blood aren't an evidence that a specific person committed the murder.

The neighbor that was asked to watch the dogs was absolutely brilliant/awesome!!! She became a detective asap and asked the questions & in the right way and got the confession to solve the murder that they would’ve never had enough evidence for PERIOD! Mom wasn’t hiding evidence that they would’ve been able to use back then. She saved evidence to bring future forensics & detectives to solve this case & bring that horrendous POS to justice!!

She didn't. Or rather there's no reason to believe that she did. It's probably one of the reasons why the guy was arrested. It's only that since the original police files were missing, this information had to be discovered again in the grandma's notes.

This made me cry sad and happy tears. What an amazing lady Loretta must have been to not only stifle the screams of fear and pain to save her daughters life, but to think of writing the name in blood. Let me tell you as a mother I'd like to think I'd do the same thing, but primal instinct takes over and when that urge to survive kicks in, it's really hard to curb it. So hats off to her, she done what she needed to do and it's only fitting that the child she fought so hard to protect would be the one to fight so hard for justice! I'm so glad Heidi had that little spark she inherited from her mother to keep going and make sure that horrible old perverted scumbag got what he deserved.

There's zero reason to believe that she kept it a secret, especially since she even wrote it down. Presumably her detailed notes about what her granddaughter had said were precisely intended to inform the police. The files were lost, so we don't know what the police was told at the time, but the guy was arrested, so presumably they knew.

I know that different people react differently to crimes like this but her mother not wanting to pursue justice blows me away. Her sister said she has mixed feelings and that her Mom just wanted her sister to rest in peace. I don't believe that would be possible for a murder victim to rest in peace if their murderer is never caught. Also, this very young child found her mother murdered, covered in blood! Why wouldn't anyone in the family realize that this would be devastating for her and get her help?

I don't think that they missed anything, in fact. They arrested him, they just didn't have enough evidences to go to trial. Presumably the testimony of a 4 yo was considered too unreliable (assuming even that she hadn't already forgotten about it and could testify), and even though he was recognized by the 10 yo he assaulted, there was no evidence that it was the same guy who did the assault and the murder. And since someone remembered about the name written in blood, it means that this too was known back then. It seems to me that the new enquirers just rediscovered the same evidences already know at the time and wouldn't have been able to do anything this time around, either, if he hadn't spilled the beans himself.

Just sold a car to Heidi and her husband recently. Its amazing to meet these people in person, knowing their story, and having somewhat of an idea of what they've gone through, and seeing them still stay positive and happy. A lot of respect goes out to this woman

I suspect there was a cover up that happened. There was a ton of evidence that it was Tom (including the other girl identifying him) and yet he walked and all the evidence which was supposed to have been preserved just disappeared. Something crooked was going on behind the scenes and it wasn't until there was a completely different staff running the department that they finally made progress on the case - even without all the physical evidence that had been collected from the scene.

When you lose a loved one to violence/murder, there's no such thing as closure. Like she said, only justice. My niece was murdered. My friend's daughter was murdered when she was only 11. In both cases, there was no closure. Justice came in the 2nd case 5 years after the murder. There wasn't any justice or closure in the case of my niece. Her killer (estranged husband) committed suicide just hours after killing my beautiful niece, who was only 28, & a mom to 2 boys.

I think that you misunderstood the case. The police back then knew about what Heidi had reported, about the letters written in blood, about the attempted abduction. But none of this was sufficient evidence (Heidi's statement was a hearsay and/or unreliable, the abduction is irrelevant since the two crimes couldn't be connected). After a judge had decided about it, there was nothing Loretta's mother could have done to "push for justice" unless new evidences could be found. And the guy couldn't have been tried the second time around, either, if he hadn't confessed, as despite the cop's efforts, he hadn't discovered anything new.

The fact that he had attempted to abduct a girl was irrelevant for the murder case, since there was no connection between the two crimes. It was just people "feeling" that they were related because they happened at about the same time more or less in the same area.
