Junk Films: What do you do with a bunch of half-baked film ideas that never made it past a rough edit? Bang em together to make four short bad films into one middle length one.
Some films don’t make it past a rough edit. What seemed like a golden idea at the time ends up taking up way too much time in the aftermath, only to never see the light of day online, and take up half the memory of a hard drive. As a lover of junk, I don’t have the heart to delete the files and thought ‘why don’t I make four crap films into one ok film?’ I’ll cut out the worst bits, watch the films live, and tell the people of KZbin what’s good and bad about good ideas gone bad.
For all the latest on tours, Patreon, books and other Beauisms - linktr.ee/beau...
Part of a series of Junk Projects:
Ep 1 - Junk Paddle: • Reusing discarded wood...
Ep 2 - Junk Office: • Saving $10k by buildin...
Ep 3 - Junk Wine: • Drinking wine found on...
Ep 4 - Junk Films: • Four bad films make on...

I think that's the point of the video Beau was trying to get across (and what I perceive to be his core philosophy). Just because individually, something may not have much value to others, when put together in an amalgam of videos, it can turn into something great for just about anyone. The adventure is finding value in what is often thrown aside as "junk" and creating new value in it, whether it be junk wood, junk film, or even junk commute time.

There were several things that were interesting about this video - the quality of the junk films, the honesty of showing how many bad ideas it takes to make a good one, the sheer slog sometimes required to film things - but the biggest takeaway was the realisation that while, yes, the storytelling ability of Beau is fantastic, it's the landscape of Aus that is so crucial to many of his films. The sun, trees, rolling hills. Contrast that all with the footage from the hebredies which just looked as damp, grey and underwhelming as it is. Despite all the storytelling and filming chops, some places are hard to make look inspiring and joyful. At least my excuse living in the Midlands of England. :D

Beau, these are works in progress but the non-negotiables of quality story telling and humanity are already here in abundance. We love these things because of how we connect with them and you have got that absolutely nailed.

We do appreciate it! Thank you Beau. You're touching on the aspect of "creative loss" which a lot of people don't even think about. As a musician, I have tens of pieces of music, half written, half forgotten, all in various states of incompleteness, and it strikes me as the sort of junk you talk about here. There's little lessons in each of my junk pieces... So maybe I ought to stitch them all together and create something out of them. Oh, and, if you ever see this comment, I tried to buy your book but it never got delivered. They said it was out of stock. Can you send me your book, about the backyard adventurer? I'll gladly pay. You'll probably not see this comment, but here goes nothing. Your style of telling a story, the way you find such deep philosophy in what others would describe as mundane or weird, the way you look and think about life has inspired me (and most probably countless others) to reconnect with the world. Before the first lockdown I felt like I was shutting down, letting friendships slip away. I totally lost my connection with nature ( I lived on the move for a number of years just a caravan and my cat. With no amenities other than a solar panel and battery bank for lights etc and a wood burner for heat and cooking) and I turned into a unconnected towny rather than the contented traveller I once was. Long story short Beau I'm selling up, buying a caravan and doing what makes me happy and content. Thanks for the inspiration Beau. Eat with your mouth open Beau, tell your story!

@@dgill441 so many great memories. Camping on a tiny island covered in wild flowers; sitting by the beach and talking, not realising that it was around 11:00pm because the light levels felt like 5:00pm; Beau thinking Banoffee was some interesting Scottish cuisine; spotting seals everywhere and paddling past a fish farm and discussing the conditions the “wild salmon” are kept in and the lice they can develop… Amazing times

The last trip with those students would be cool to watch maybe a way to show it off is asking the students questions what they think about thing changing in life as they start to grow

Thanks Beau for not uploading a VLOG! This was great, learned a lot. Learning from someone's learnings is good. Then again I like stories where all the things are not explained. Or where people won't talk all the time (I'm Finnish, we are quiet). Telling a story and telling (speaking) a story I guess there are not the same. Little bit of both is good. You didn't open everything when paddling in Africa. How could you have when there was so much going on. Damn I liked the pumpkin case! Always hated packing food on my trips, so complicated. I like how your brain works!

Back again. It's beautiful to see how you can take stories that deserved to be told and give them their little spotlight, even though they weren't quite right. It kind of shows that everything has purpose, even if it doesn't fulfill its intended purpose.

There are videos online that are as dull and simple as “Gas station, 2AM. 1993” That are now loved and valuable documentation of the everyday life of a person in 93.

I've only just found your channel and been sorta binge watching. Been wanting to do this KZbin thing, not for money or clicks, but just coz It looks like fun. Problem is can't figure out what to film. But now I understand completely. It was never about the filming of something new or different or fashionable. I see now that is about the story, the yarn, the passing of knowledge and life. Cheers mate, thanks for the inspiration.
