I could see actors at the time to play these parts, like Alfred Molina as Carl Denham, maybe Brendan Fraser as Jack Driscoll , and either Kate Winslet or Charlize Theron as Ann Darrow. Idk those are my choices. Not the best but still fun ideas.

If I was a filmmaker, I would go to Universal and ask if I could make a king Kong remake and have Peter Jackson and his team come along as producer and crew. And of course have them do it the way they were gonna do it originally and on the ending, be very sad and emotional and have Naomi Watts do a cameo with the classic line: No, it wasn't the airplanes... It was Beauty killed the Beast kinda like how he wanted to do it with Fay Wray. Good idea, huh?

I find it strange why Jackson did not use his original script when he got offered again to make the movie. And re-used the animatronics and stuff they made in the pre-production. Because, i can't imagine that they destroyed all of them seeing all the work they put into it.

I LOVED the Kong/Ann relationship in the 1996 script. It was one of the best romances I've read, and I was so moved by the amount of love these two had for each other.

While I do not deny the 1996 King Kong could have been absolutely amazing, finding this out doesn't make me dislike the 2005 film. I still very much enjoy it, and I don't really see it as a "shot for shot" remake like the Psycho remake, its main problem being its length and some casting. I also wonder, if this film got made would we have gotten Lord of the Rings? I read the script, and conceptually it was remarkable, but the dialogue was pretty rough and the characters were not that likeable. With that said, if both projects could somehow coexist, this film would have probably been more beloved than the 2005 film. It's a shame Universal got gold feet (damn it, Zilla!), because it could have been a very popular and entertaining movie, worthy of King Kong.
@loganshocky922

I found Ann Darrow and Jack Driscoll likeable. Both were badass(Ann Darrow should be American instead of British though) and the 1996 script somehow makes Carl Denham and even bigger greedy a-hole than in the 1933 and 2005 films. Kind of wished the inscent pit scene would have been more graphic given how the scene was deleted from the 1933 original for being too graphic\horrific. All-in-all, the 1996 script has a Indiana Jones\The Mummy vibe to it which is interesting.

I agree with you. The 1996 version is great and one day (though highly unlikely) I would like to see it adapted into a true film, but it dosen't take away how much of a great film 2005 King Kong version is.

Well, it was the first draft. I’m sure Jackson and Walsh would be spending time with editors going over the script and give it proper polish
@oscarstainton
@oscarstainton 3 жыл бұрын
@@johncaulfield8935 Of that I have no doubt, every script goes through changes and revisions before filming begins. The final draft could have been truly incredible. On one hand, its a shame that they didn’t get their big break with this reimagined and wildly adventurous version of King Kong. On the other, the possibility that it might have prevented The Lord of the Rings trilogy from happening, or falling into much less capable hands, is not so great.

I wouldn't blame the 1998 Godzilla movie, they just couldn't know there was a Kong film in production, and also, the only one we should blame for the 1996 production don't have been released is Universal, they could just choose another release date, like 1999

This reminds me of the cancelled 1994 Godzilla remake we almost got until Roland Emmerich got picked as Director of the movie and this one is better then the one we got with a fateful Godzilla redesign and a better story witch the full script is online for the 1994 film Ps Stan Winston worked on the Godzilla redesign and concept art and sculptures of the monsters and they look awesome and the other monster looks really scary to.

I am planning to do a reconstruction of the 1996 draft for the movie using people that closely resemble the original casting choices, hand puppets, stop motion, free to use Green Screen footage from KZbin and Library music that fit the scenes. Edit: After such a long time saying this, I eventually forgot about the idea as it went nowhere to be honest. But with all that said and done, I honestly doubt this project would ever be completed. After thinking about it, the reconstruction would most likely be incredibly difficult for me to do. I have a very tight budget and some of these practical effects would be very hard to make them look good. If I have to do this, then I’d have to change many parts of the film so it can fit the budget, I’m sorry I had to disappoint you all, but it’s better to say this now than never. I hope you all understand. On the bright side however, I’m planning to make a Godzilla fan-film, and I promise to have the film not go too over budget and it will definitely be released somewhere next year...

While Kong 2005 is pretty faithful to the 1933 original, I wouldn’t call it a shot-for-shot remake. New characters, different dynamics, new scenes and monsters, a very different take on Kong as a monster, and generally expanded the world established in the original film in fun ways. Disappointing that the 1996 didn’t happen, but I still love the 2005 version.

Also in 1996, nobody knew who had the rights to KING KONG. The movie had been made in 1933 by RKO Radio Pictures, but that studio shut down in 1958. Janus Films had the distribution rights in 1971, Nostalgia Merchant put it out on VHS home video during the 1980s, and MGM Video put it out during the 1990s and that included a colorized version (ewwwwwww).

I almost wished this film was made. But I'm glad it wasn't. The reason is that if this film was made in the 1990s like intended then the 2005 film wouldn't have existed which means that there would never be a toy line off it which means I wouldn't have gotten an action figure of King Kong which means I wouldn't have gotten years of fun for me reanacting scenes from the film in my room. It's like Universal knew that my needs were more important then everyone else. Also the Lord of the Rings trilogy probably wouldn't have been made, and LOTR is my 4th favorite film

Perhaps also The Mummy or The Mummy Returns wouldn't have also been made,since the director of those film's clearly drew inspiration from the cancelled 1996 Kong script;personally I prefer the 1996 draft than the bloated,over-indulgent,lethargic 2005 Kong,which started out promising with the opening montage of 30's Depression era New York with Al Jolson's iconic & befitting tune "I'm Sittin' on Top Of The world";but gradually fell apart soon afterwards.Anyone who says the 1996 script isn't as good as the final filmed version in 2005 is just a Peter Jackson fanboy asskisser,LOTR trilogy is a classic,King Kong 2005 ISN'T,nor will it ever be considered one

I hindsight the 1996 script with some changes would've made the remake more of it's own thing, where as the 2005 remake is much more beholden to the original, with some character changes. I do like the 2005 remake overall but the length, and plot is a bloated rehash of the original, instead of being it's own story which I think the 1996 was going for. Many elements were re-purposed like the Brontosaurus stampede, insect pit sequence, and Kong battling the 3 T-rex's still present, but would've been like Indiana Jones in tone, which would've fit the action adventure genre Kong is attributed with, instead of the romanticized fantasy epic the original was.

Peter Jackson and the entire production team should've used their own project that they started in 1996 to create what could've been the best King Kong movie. They should've left the original 1933 version alone, to be creative and make their own unique version in 1996. I also want many sequels to this particular 1996 version to be released which unfortunately is very unlikely to happen. This is just my opinion.

It would be amazing if in a few decades, King Kong is remade again for a new generation of people (only if it's necessary). I think it would be the perfect opportunity to use the 1996 script, and give Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh writer's credit. It would retell the original story once again, and I'm sure would give Jackson some satisfaction. Since he said he's always been disappointed that the original film that was planned didn't survive pre production. Just to show there's a cycle of inspired future filmmakers that want to keep the classic tale alive, I'm sure it would make him proud to know he started this chain of future generations of filmmakers keeping Kong and the classic story prominent in American Cinema as technology evolves just as Merian Cooper inspired him.

You do bring up an interesting point too. Why did they ditch the 1996 draft? I'm certain Peter Jackson and team had their reasons, such as DeNiro and Clooney being unavailable or lost interest. Maybe, they just wanted to move on.

I definitely still enjoy the (2005) remake of King Kong, and it still is one of my favorite movies of all time growing up as a kid. But man the 96’ version sounded awesome. It definitely also would’ve been something new and fresh for the King King IP while still paying homage to the original 33’ film.

I myself read the 96 script about 2 years ago and remember being thoroughly entertained but a bit disappointed at the end. It was a lot more different and "imaginative" (I put that in quotes as that premise only works if you've seen and compare it to the 33 original, which most people will not), but I felt as if it really lacked the depth that the '05 Kong had. The mature and nuanced storytelling from the 05 is missing, and although I do love The Mummy for what it is, I still hold the 05 Kong as high above it, in all fronts. Peter Jackson I feel learned and grew so much by making LOTR, that he was able to apply that knowledge and skill to the 05 Kong, and gave us what I still hold as the best Kong film we've ever gotten, and likely will ever get, at least with that story. I think you did a great job with this video but I feel as if all your sentiments for the 96 version and against the 05 version come from the fact that you know the 33 version very well and wanted something different. However I feel as if you were to look at both the 96 and 05 separately, within their own context (which is fair as the original was a long ass time ago and is not well known to the general public), one can see how superior the 05 version really is.

I do like the 2005 film don't get me wrong. But I just hate when good ideas are just thrown away for safer and average decisions. If anything I would love to see Universal find a way to take the unused scripts and find a way to adapt them in some sort of material. Would love to see a graphic novel of the 96 draft at least.
@animaxindustries
@animaxindustries 7 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you about turning them into a graphic novel or an animated film or something! I'd love and would pay to see that! I feel as if those decisions weren't made because they were "safe" though. Jackson had just evolved as a filmmaker and wanted to make something a lot closer to the original, a homage as opposed to a reimagining. Maybe it was because he was a bit older as opposed to in his younger years when just about anyone wants to take on the world and leave their stamp on it, I'm sure it applies to most creatives as well. And Jackson did take a lot of risks, hell making it so close to the original is essentially a huge risk as there's a large opportunity that what clicked with audiences 70 years ago won't click with them now. I recall that one of the top execs was really adamant in Jackson cutting it down to about 2 to 2 1/2 hours, but Jackson stuck to his guns, and showed the 3 hour long cut (maybe the 3:21 hour long "extended" edition? Idk), and she changed her mind and gave him the ok. So I don't think it was about safe or average decisions, just a specific route that Jackson took, because he wanted to take it, not because he felt he had to or feared not to.

Better would be at some point in the future Universal actually give the scrapped 96 script the greenlight and make it into a film;but that will never happen because it would be a second Kong remake from Peter Jackson;it's too bad Universal didn't do to Jackson's Kong project what Warner Bros did for the Exorcist prequel,Paul Schrader made an intelligently written film,but when the producers saw it they scrapped Schrader's flick and hired another director,Renny Harlin to make a more "mainstream popcorn film",I grant you were Universal able to film the 1996 Kong,it would be a FAR better,and Far more loved Kong film
@animaxindustries
@animaxindustries 7 жыл бұрын
So you wish that Universal had taken the project away from Jackson who wanted to make a great, nuanced film and give it to someone who just wanted to make a mainstream Popcorn flick? That might be the first time I've ever heard that... I highly disagree with you about a modern 96 Kong film being a better and more loved Kong film. Sure the script was different from what we got but again, I felt the script was missing depth and had no real catharsis. It was a tiny bit better than Kong Skull Island which I personally did not like. It looked great, had good acting and great fights, but that was about it. It really had no story and I can't remember any of the character's names or personalities other than "tough tracker guy" or "tough military Samuel L Jackson," etc. Jackson's film is a great one that I will defend strongly. I see its flaws (a bit too long and a few storylines are dropped kind of haphazardly, which I blame the overall Outline for as they probably couldn't find a way to make any of the sailors' stories transfer to when they get back to NYC, other than the main characters.) But what is there, is amazing. So much depth is given to all the characters and the audience grows to like and know these people. Even Carl Denham, who is villified, is still a sympathetic character which I feel conflicted about. All the performances are great, as is the aesthetic of the whole movie, the fx work deserved that vfx Oscar, the music is amazing, and overall, a great film. Sure its a bit long but I don't mind it at all.
@lindabowen103

I suppose the primary reason Jackson didn't film his 1996 screenplay had more to do with the fact that both The Mummy &The Mummy Returns had already graced theater screens,so Jackson didn't want to emulate those films when in fact it's vice versa,both Mummy flick's were inspired by,drew elements from Jackson's scrapped 96 script.What I meant by "mainstream popcorn flick" is that the 1996 Kong script is a tongue in cheek Indiana Jones-style rollercoaster ride,having Jack Driscoll as a World WAR 1 fighter pilot was an ingenious touch;at the script's climax he helps Kong in battling the Biplanes at the Empire State Building climax,the 2005's Adrien Brody playwright just didn't measure up,he and Ann had ZERO chemistry,the JImmy & Hayes subplot should have been excised from the film completely,it just added to the already overloaded runtime and was an overindulgent superfluous gratuity on Jackson's part,all in all,I wish he had filmed the 96 script,it was more satisfying and wasn't the huge the 05 film disappointment turned out to be

I find it funny that Universal were pushing Jackson to cast Bruce Campbell over George Clooney! As if that was once a thing! That aside, I love Brucey, and another great thing of his to check out is Jack Of All Trades, where he plays a typically Campbell anti-hero in a period adventure setting. Also, the swashbuckling character he plays in the film-with-a-film in The Majestic. It's a pity Campbell never got to do an Indiana Jones type thing, and along with Kurt Russell in Big Trouble In Little China, both are great at playing lovable ass-holes, a bit like Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones.

I think the way I think about it. I would love this movie except for one of the worst, Godzilla 1998. It sucks, but I was okay with 2005 King Kong until I figured out the plans. If this, for example, well, if we imagine it it's that movie came out in 1998, it would be the best. There would they will never there would be a 2005 King Kong. This would have been a hit movie. They will make better than Godzilla, but it's just the Zilla. But yeah, also, the KZbinr that is reading this, which you just talked about, I agree with you about why you didn't film it; if it did exist and found it, I would love It if he had to make a King Kong 2
