Bobby James It's definitely a beast of a round. I carry 9mm merely for the extra 2 round capacity. And I keep my 357 sig in the case since it is no longer made in the M&P line. I am very fond of the 357 sig, and it is the most accurate of my M&Ps with me behind the trigger. Thanks for watching.

i personally prefer the fact that the 357sig has a high capacity, is a very flat shooter. the penetrations a big plus. although the draw back would be over penetration and collateral damage. i have been carrying a 357sig for 10 yrs and don't ever see myself changing.

True. The 357 sig was designed for better barrier penetration performance, and I wanted to demonstrate that capability. Hence using fmj rounds. I personally would rather have a bit too much penetration than a bit too little. When using hollowpoints, the difference in penetration between these two calibers is minimal. Thank you for watching!
@CheifDegenerate
@CheifDegenerate 8 жыл бұрын
n300zx931 that's true and false at the same time. most manufacturers today have (for lack of better Terminology) "watered down" the 357 Sig. and have had to slightly redesign the bullet. early hollow points still over penetrated because they tried to make them just like 9mm. but they often clogged giving them minimal expansion and thus over penetration. though many brands these days have tamed them to still beat many barriers and still stop within desired FBI specs using gel. however, these calibers still grossly over penetrate (in comparison to 9mm or 380 auto) when fired into parts of the body with less resistance such as the stomach or into the thigh missing the bone. That has always been and will always be a danger of larger bore calibers and higher pressures. I'm not an advocate for any caliber being better than another. my actual theory is the more diversity out there the better. I am often left only being able to carry a 32 auto, and with Lehigh Defense creating the Xtreme Cavitator i feel more comfortable with it. if 357sig ammo was more affordable, and more plentiful in my area I'd probably find myself carrying my Sig P239 more often. Though I wish Kahr made a 357sig (especially in their K series) I'll settle for what I have. I may have to set out and see the difference of my 357 Sig ammo like he displayed here (my P239 having a shorter barrel may have different results) but I'm going to try between JHP, FMJ, and my Lehigh Defense Xtreme penetrator and Xtreme Defense ammo. time to line up somewhere to go shooting!

+The Penetration Channel i have both calibers and which one i carry on any given day/night depends on whichever one would likely fit specific self defense scenarios that i could possibly encounter while i'm in different enviornments. For example: the times i go to dept. stores, malls or any place where a mass shooting could take placei'll take the 357 SIG or a 10mm. Any other place where i'd likely have to defend against a more personal attack i'd likely have my 9mm, 40 or 45.

Sorry that the .357 Sig never took off in a wide sustained acceptance by military or police departments. It is one hard hitting fast round that can do the job expected from it. Just about every publicized test that I have seen puts it ahead of 9mm, and just behind 10mm + .357 mags. Ammo is hard to find and expensive but I would trust this cal. in defense of home and family.

Winchester white box is a very weak loading of the 357 sig. If the load does not achieve at least 1450 fps, then the test is not really testing a valid loading of the round. But this was interesting anyway and showed the anticipated results; the sig is a really good hard barrier penetrator.

the 40 180gr is heavy for caliber, a 155gr would be a more equal comparison. you are comparing a slow and weak 390 energy round with a good fast 500+ energy round. obviously in this scenario the 357 will perform much better. underwood ammo would provide a much better comparison, keeping the bullet weights comparable.

Being a person who shot a 40 and a 357mag (I know it's not 357sig) accidentally with no ear protection, I would take a heavier slower subsonic bullet any day of the week in case I have to actually use the gun for self defense. if my understanding of ballistics (with relation to bullet design) is correct, than in terms of penetration, the smaller, faster bullet retains its power over longer ranges and penetrates deeper. The slower, larger bullet has more penetration and power at closer ranges but loses its effectiveness at longer ranges. so the .357 sig would be better at penetrating cover due to its higher muzzle velocity, if a police officer is in a place where theres a lot of cover criminals can exploit. The .40 s&w would be better in tighter spaces inside alleys and buildings where its lower velocity and lower penetration are ideal for police officers raiding a building where collateral damage cant happen. so, irrespecitve of ammo cost, i can see a well reasoned case for both the .40 s&w and the .357 sig.

Great video. You could probably end the whole debate and and use the underwood extreme penetrator in 357 sig. 9 mm 40 caliber in 10 mm that was settled all arguments. And while you’re at it you could try the double tap 357 sig. in the 147 gr full metal jacket flat nose . I think that would be a task that everyone would want to see. Also to keep it uniform you can probably just do multiple sheets of plywood. Just a thought. Anyway great video you’re doing a great job. B

I love the .357 sig. But here's the thing. When you are comparing 125 gr to 180 gr of course there is going to be a difference and a huge one at that. For the .40 that is at the very top of the weight for bullets. Not sure what is at the top for the. 357 sig but the. 40 becomes ALOT closer to the .357 sig and a much better comparison when a lighter bullet is used.
@ThePenetrationChannel
@ThePenetrationChannel 6 жыл бұрын
James Francis the 147gr. Is pretty much as heavy as the 357 sig goes. But heres my issue, if I were to use a 140gr projectile in the 40, why should I use the heaviest bullet in 357? Should I not also decrease the weight for the 357? 125gr is middle of the road. There are heavier bullets for the 40 such as the 200 gr. So. I went with the 180. You can check out my underwood ammo comparison where I test a 140gr 40 s&w.

crowmagg1 agreed. Converting a 40 to 357sig, or versa visa, is in *most cases* just a matter of a barrel swap, seeing 135gr 40 s&w vs 125gr 357sig, and 155gr 40 vs 147gr 357 would really help determine if i need a barrel swap or just a lighter box of ammo! ... and also other guy who will probably be notified in this thread; kinetic energy is literally a product of mass and velocity, sooo......

that is clearly pressure treated pine, not that it really matters although I would like to say that wood is an inconsistent target because wood has variance in grain structure and becomes much denser near knots. For more a better comparison try using an engineered board like particle ply or mdf for a more even density

very nice video .I like your videos very much 7.62 ×25 tokerav is also very good and high velocity ammo you should also try it .i think tokerav is more powerful then 9mm ,40 s&w and 357 SIG thanks

4x4=3.5 inches. 1x6=.75 inches. So, that is a full 6.5 inches of wood. If you had used five 2x4s, that would have been 6.5 inches into 7.5 inches of wood. My guess is the tip of the .357 sig would just be peeking from the fifth 2x4. Keep in mind this is a 10mm necked down to a 9 mm.

The 357 sig imo superior to the 9/40/45. My handgun caliber of choice is the 357 mag 125gr out of a 4in barrel. With semi autos obv being the preference for LE etc the 357 sig should be utilized by more departments esp highway men and any that will likely encounter barriers.
@swaghauler8334

The .357 SIG was far better in its original loadings. Remember that until the turn of the 21st Century, the standard loading of the .357 SIG was a 125-grain bullet traveling at 1450 to 1500 fps out of a 4" barrel. I guess the polymer framed guns (and shooters) couldn't stand the power of the original loading. I also remember when 1400 fps was a TYPICAL speed for 10mm Auto and virtually EVERY 230 grain .45 ACP round would ROUTINELY RUN 950 fps (not 820 to 880 fps) from a 5" barrel. The "wussification" of ammo in the 21st Century continues unabated.

@troy3456789 7 жыл бұрын
+swaghauler It is just how cheap and downgraded factory loads have gotten. They're not "wussified", they're "cheapified" and over millions of rounds, the manufacturer saves a lot of powder, thus money, thus maximizing profit. DoubleTap, Underwood and Buffalo Bore offer quality controlled standardized factory loads that are considered "premium" by today's standards, but were considered standard ammo performance/ballistics at the time the firearms were designed.

+Steve Johnson 357 magnum and 357 sig are not similar on paper. 357 magnum outperforms it by 27% more energy. 357 magnum 158gr JHP Buffalo Bore= 1,475 ft/s & 763 ft·lbf energy. 357 Sig 125 gr Underwood TMJ = 1,450 ft/s & 583 ft·lbf energy.

I can tell you this there was a crack in the first board and the 40 sw went right under it the Sig hit directly into the crack. All I'm saying is it didn't have much resistance on the first Board.

How far away from the target were you? I have never heard of a projectile breaking up before impact. If you were extremely close, maybe it was some unburned powder stippling the paper.

thank you I have a S&W in 40 SW an have been thinking of setting it up to run 357 sig often the bad guys will start crap then drive away I put first though the motor the crap stops here my question is will the 45 colt 250 gr. fmj. at 950 fps' do that job an can the 357 sig stop a running car motor in a pinch ???

The 40 had a 180 Grain slug. The 357 had a 125 grain slug. The difference in weight would vary the velocity. Thus, penetration is different. I laugh when these 357 Sig fanboys tout their Sig as if it was all more powerful than the 40, when they are using a dud load for the 40 and a hot load for the Sig. It's like comparing two crossbows. One is shooting arrows made of Balsa wood, while the other using using lightweight graphite arrows.

so... through the bad guy then through a car door then through the kid setting in the car then through the other kid setting next to him... dont get me wrong, i am a huge fan of the 357 sig and i personally carry it often. but more than anything i hope that this video reminds people that as gun owners, we are responsible for every round that comes out of our guns. NO EXCEPTIONS!
@ThePenetrationChannel
@ThePenetrationChannel 7 жыл бұрын
philip mullins this video was to showcase the "penetration" capabilities of these two calibers. hence the use of fmj ammo. Hopefully if ANYONE carries a firearm for self defense, they will be carrying self defense ammo. Hollowpoint ammunition performs very similar to each other between carry calibers due to being designed to perform at a specific standard. If anyone carries fmj ammo for self defense, they greatly increase the chance of overpenetration. If one is responsible enough to carry a firearm, then hopefully they understand this risk.

i appreciate the reply. and i also appreciate the video. yall did a very good job of a real world, easy to understand comparison of the impressive penetration capabilities of both rounds. and i dont bother to reply to crappy videos. i was just offering my perspective on what these results could reveal. some people dont always think that sort of thing through. ammo prices, availability, extra mags, etc... not a complaint or passing any judgement on your vid. just adding food for thought for someone who might be watching this vid trying to decide on a caliber of weapon to buy for self defense. maybe their first handgun?
