Saskatoon or Halifax can't support an NHL team. THEY ARE TOO SMALL. Metro Halifax is just 430,000 and Saskatoon only has 330,000 and you can't rely too much on Regina (160 miles away) for 41 Saskatoon home games or other parts of Nova Scotia for Halifax either especially over a full 41 home games in Canadian winters to pay NHL ticket prices. PLUS you need to sell 1000s of corporate seats to make it work and sell 16,000+ tickets per game. You add the 1.5 billion US dollars needed to afford NHL expansion costs and building an NHL size Arena. PIPE DREAM Replace Saskatoon and Halifax with Austin, Texas (Pop: 2,25 million) and San Diego (Pop: 3.38 million). Both are fast-growing and affluent American cities with many large corporations, wealthy Americans and are 8-10 times larger in size than Saskatoon or Halifax. PS: Austin and San Diego have both been reported to be on the NHL watchlist.

I agree but Bettman hates Canada for some reason and Toronto and Buffalo complained they would lose revenue if Hamilton got a team from the blackberry owner who wanted it. Hamilton would do well and Toronto wouldn't be hurt by it. Buffalo would be alot of people from Niagara and Hamilton area go to Buffalo because it's cheaper then Toronto. Also Saskatchewan and Halifax are bad areas for a team. Quebec would be great to see again

Halifax has the entire Maritimes it can support not just Halifax itself. Market it as a Maritimes team and that adds the nearby cities like Moncton, Dartmouth, and Fredericton, not to mention the provinces of PEI and Newfoundland to their fanbase. Easily it's a large fanbase when you realize they are all so close to each other and the only sport these people really know extremely well is hockey.

Because Hartford has history in hockey, an established fanbase that has been clamoring for a long time and shows that it's a safer move with not too many insane risks. The only one I don't see happening is Hartford. I know that everyone wants to see a return of the Whale, but the Northeast is saturated and if you bring in an additional team in that tight space, you're only cannibalizing the existing fan base. Boston and the NY/NJ teams wouldn't have it. I know that some might argue, the same could be said for Toronto/Hamilton, but its a totally different situation. Not sure what the solution is, but Hartford ain't it. other than that, I sort of dig it.

So starting out, the only thing i don't like about this plan is jumping directly to 40 Teams. While the NHL could probably handle the jump better than the MLB if/when they even get to 32 teams, this isn't the NFL we're talking about. What i would do is split the expansion to 40 teams into 2 phases as follows (This example does not take into account folds, relocations, or division realignments) Phase 1: One new team per division Pacific: Portland Wolves Central: Houston Aeros Metro: Hartford Whalers Atlantic: Quebec Nordiques Phase 2: Same as phase 1, but with new teams (There will be more "_____ or _____" scenarios since i'm not an expert on where the NHL should go) Pacific: Utah Mormons (SLC), or Anchorage Blizzard Central: Kansas City Scouts Metro: Bridgeport, Providence, or (if the population increases fast enough between now and then) Manchester NH Atlantic: Atlanta Thrashers

@@mattm8108 You say that like it'll literally NEVER happen. If there's ever an expansion to 40 teams in the first place it's not gonna happen till sometime in the 2040's unless Hockey popularity in the US explodes out of nowhere, so there's time for the sport to grown nationwide, even if it's at a slow rate. If Hockey in the US starts to get anywhere even remotely close to being as popular as it is in Canada, The South won't be as bad a place for hockey as it is now. Plus, the Thrashers failed because their owner was a piece of shit. If they get real ownership like the Packers, Mavericks, and Bruins, they will succeed.

Where in Saskatchewan? Based on the dot it looks like you are thinking Regina. Boo! Really bad choice there. It should be Saskatoon. It is a larger city, already has a well supported WHL team in the Blades and it’s easier to get to travel-wise. There is also the SaskTel Centre already there for the arena, granted it’s pretty small but it could work temporarily while a new arena is built close to the U of S and the picturesque Saskatchewan River. It has to be Saskatoon here.

Actually 40 teams sound like a good idea even though it will lower the odds of my favourite hockey teams winning the playoffs. Atlanta CAN support an NHL team, i don't care about what happened to the Flames in the 70's that was 50 years ago and not relevant. They put the Thrashers stadium in the wrong part of town(the Braves were in downtown ATL and they left for a reason) and the team was TERRIBLE yet the attendance was not that bad at all. If they put the team in either Gwinnett or Cobb County out in the burbs and the team was atleast decent then they could draw. Atlanta CAN support an NHL team and i will die on this hill

A province with an arena, petitions for a team, and a middle class population that in the 60s when the Blues almost moved there, had thousands of contracts signed to buy season tickets? Are you joking? A province of over a million people that can easily be driven entirely through in 2-3 hours where hockey is a beloved sport can easilly survive. High population is worthless if there is no interest. Arizona has taught everyone that.

Besides having a very cheap owner, the Senators' biggest problem is their arena location. The other 6 Canadian teams' home arenas are right downtown, but Ottawa basically plays in Sudbury. After 30 years they may finally have a fanbase and not just a city of half Hab and half Leaf fans, but with an arena in the boonies, even worse than Phoenix' situation, it's not helping. Fort Lauderdale is going to build a new downtown arena. There is not one city in Saskatchewan with the population size and corporate presence to support an NHL team. Same with Halifax. Hartford is too small . Hamilton isn't happening. All the Coyotes need is a downtown arena. So does Ottawa. The four cities that should get a team: Houston Kansas City Atlanta (yeah, you didn't count on Turner Sports to pay big bucks for the NHL, did you) One other Eastern time zone city.....Jeremy Jacobs owns the Bruins, has massive clout with other NHL owners and does not want Quebec.
@timtwoface
@timtwoface 3 жыл бұрын
Well that's one man's opinion. I agree with you on Houston and Kansas City but if you really think Atlanta is getting a third chance at a team any time soon, you're dreaming. Portland very much can support a team. In fact, the NHL was looking at them at the same time as Seattle, as a back-up plan in the Pacific Northwest. At a population of 2.5 million, that's similar to Vancouver and Pittsburgh, and Oregon has deep hockey history. And they already have the arena, too. So I would consider Portland, especially, very possible in the future. You're likely right about Hartford, Halifax, and Saskatchewan, though if the right owner comes in for those two Canadian locations, it's still possible...of course, Winnipeg and Quebec City would be the smallest NHL markets and they're twice as big as Halifax and 3x as big as Regina or Saskatoon, but...Canada? Also I'm not suggesting Hamilton specifically would get a team but a second team in the Toronto area definitely would be possible. Corporate money and population in a hockey-mad market, it would work. If New York City can have 3 and Los Angeles can have 2, Toronto definitely could have 2. Heck, Montreal could even support a second one, probably.

Portland, Oregon has 3.4 million people in the greater Metropolitan area ... has decades of minor league hockey for example Portland Winterhawks. The average household income is very high at $71,500 .. would have immediate rivals with San Jose, Seattle and Vancouver and has an NHL size arena (MODA arena - capacity 18,200) already and an owner that has made multiple inquires on acquiring an NHL team. Bigger than Kansas, richer than Kansas, has a deeper hockey fandom than Kansas and an Billionaire owner already kicking the tires. Kansas has ZERO billionaire interested at this moment.

NHL expansion fee is presently $900,000,000 Cdn and the only guy that wanted and can afford a team in Quebec City is former Separatist Politician Pierre Karl Peladeau. Former leader of the Parti Quebecois is a STRONG Quebec Nationalist ... which means he wants the Province of Quebec to break away from Canada and become a separate Country. The other 5 (Montreal will be neutral) Canadian owners would become the biggest blockers of giving him an NHL a team and was the BIGGEST reason next to small market that Quebec City got rejected years ago and only gave a team to Vegas and then again ignored Quebec City when giving another team to Seattle.

If your putting a team in Atlantic Canada why Halifax. Yes it's the bigger city, but then you can't draw fans as easily from the other 2 provinces in that area. Moncton is a more central location, which could drawn fans, from Charlottetown, Saint John, Fredericton, Halifax with a commute for most places being less then 3 hours. Halifax is the biggest city in Atlantic Canada but any nhl team in Atlantic Canada would require support from the surrounding areas to be successful and that's more likely if it's placed in a more central location.

4th to 6th top candidates with Quebec City as a relocation team. (Milwaukee, Kansas City, Atlanta and San Francisco are 7-10 in no order) 4) Toronto 2nd Team: 6.62 million - Toronto is a vibrant economic city that is hockey crazy and can easily support a second NHL team, but there is no 2nd arena or billionaire owner in sight yet. Scotiabank Arena can be shared with the Maple Leaf’s to start and many rumors of a second arena have been in works for years without any approved plans. Maybe just a matter of time. 5) San Diego: 3.47 million. No NBA team and now no NFL Team and the AHL hockey team leading their league in attendance. The Rich economy, high household income and stable growth rate of 9.4% over the last 7 years - makes San Diego a prime for expansion city but unfortunately no NHL size arena in place but talks have started but no owner is in place. Medium Household Income (2019): $79,673 6) Salt Lake City: 1.29 million (2.76 million within 50 miles) - SLC is a fast-growing city of 12.7% growth, solid, prosperous economy with even faster-growing affluential suburbs of Provo-Orem and Ogden-Clearfield that add 1.33 million more potential fans under 40miles/70km away. Winter city and former host of the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics looks the part. NHL size arena exists in Vivint Smart Home Arena the home of Utah Jazz and minor league hockey. Can SLC support NBA and NHL at the same time? Medium Household Income (2019): $74,865

Everyone in the comments is hating but I am loving this lol. Maybe make the team in Halifax a Maritimes team and it could work easily. Saskatchewan proved as a province they could support an NHL team because season tickets literally sold out when they thought the blues were moving there in the 60s. The people there have shown they can support a CFL team, what's stopping them from supporting a Hockey team. It's a province of >1 Million. I'm from Toronto so a Hamilton team is more iffy in my eyes considering numbers of Hockey fans have become slowly less with each generation in the GTA. Still Hamilton's metro population is large and even Toronto suburbs closer to TO like Brampton and Mississauga would probably view Hamilton as a team for the Toronto suburbs and support them, which is a huge fanbase.

This is clearly a stupid video bud. The Florida Panthers ownership said they want the Panthers to be specifically in the state of Florida (Sunshine State). And why are you disrespecting the Arizona Coyotes exactly?, yeah that's what I thought. The Arizona Coyotes shown that they can keep their team in Glendale, AZ, and so did the Florida Panthers. Also there's some dumb locations in here such as Salt Lake City, Halifax, Anchorage and Hamilton. HAM: Hamilton already failed an NHL team (Hamilton Tigres) and they're not that big of a sports city. They only have one professional sports team (Hamilton Tiger Cats) of the CFL (Canadian Football League). If you put a team there they'd be instantly relocated in 3 to 5 years. ANC: Anchorage isn't a hockey city nor a huge sports town. They love their University Anchorage Seawolves teams (Hockey, Football and Basketball). Another thing is that they'd only have one or two season's in the NHL. HFX: Halifax has CFL, CPL (Canadian Premiere League) and QMJHL hockey (Halifax Mosseheads). They love hockey but it's not going to be a great market. I know people there and they tell me "We don't want an NHL team and we don't need it. SLC: Salt Lake City isn't even a sports town that much. They can barely keep Real Salt Lake (MLS) alive there. And University sports is all they need. I spoke to people who live there, I'm not even lying. And one last thing. I think you should re-do this video because it makes barely any sense at all. Thank you, bye.

It is delusional to think that Arizona and Florida are stable franchises, there is almost a universal consensus that these franchises will be first on the chopping block. It’s a shame because I would like to see both markets retain their franchises, but one of them is going to Quebec City in the next five years. Just because the ownership wants to stay, doesn’t mean they will. The Coyotes have bounced around multiple venues in Phoenix and the city is getting tired of them, they are the likely first team that will move.
