November 25, 2017 - On the eve of the 105th Grey Cup, there is some scuttlebutt about the CFL expanding to a tenth team, which would finally include the Maritime Provinces.
But why stop there? What does the future hold?

I think a 12 teamed "all Canadian" CFL could be possible within 20 years. (With Halifax, London and Quebec City added.) West: BC, EDM, CAL, SASK Central: WINN , LON, HAM, TOR East: OTT, MON, QUE, HAL You could go to what I call a "3-4-5" playoff system. (3 division winners, 4 playoff wild cards, 5 out of playoffs.) Seed division winners 1,2,3 In order of records against each other. (Tie breaker devised to break any ties.) Then seed the other 9 teams in order of records against each other. (Tie breaker devised to break any ties.) This 7 team approach to the playoffs could also be used for the current 9 team CFL. ("2-5-2" playoff plan.) It can also be used for a 10 teamed CFL. ("2-5-3" playoff plan.) Playoffs would see #1 seed get a Grey Cup preliminary round bye. Preliminary round: 2vs7, 3vs6, 4vs5. Winners advance to Grey Cup Semi Finals. Semi Finals: #1 vs lowest remaining seed. 2nd highest remaining seed vs 3rd highest remaining seed. Winners advance to the Grey Cup Game. Highest seed always gains home field advantage in Preliminary Round and Semi Finals. The CFL could also consider implementing a two week break between the Semi Finals weekend and the Grey Cup game. Then designate a home field advantage approach to the Grey Cup Game. The higher seeded team gaining the home field advantage and becoming the Grey Cup host. The financial overhead would be reduced substantially compared to the costs of a predetermined Grey Cup Game location and ticket sales would be brisk because the home team is hosting the Grey Cup Game every season. The concerns of a "West vs West" matchup or an "East vs East" Grey Cup game matchup would be substantially reduced with loyal Canadians still willing to tune in to the televised Grey Cup game each year. Two weeks could still be enough time to add a solid level of pageantry to the Grey Cup game with the location of the game not known until the Grey Cup teams are determined. The CFL could start the preseason games in mid April. Begin the 21 week regular season in early May and play the Grey Cup game on the first SATURDAY in November. The playoffs could start on a Thanksgiving Weekend Friday night followed by the other two games played on the SATURDAY. Better weather conditions, for the playoffs, would improve the attendance of playoff games and better legitimize the wins and losses in the biggest games of the season. For eventual US expansion the CFL should consider reducing the size of the playing field to better fit into stadiums, that currently exist in the U.S, by reducing the end zones to be 10 yards deep and the uprights placed behind the end zones too. Single points could still be conceded, in the end zone, on punts and field goals that fall short with the ball remaining inside the field of play. Missed field goals, that go wide right or left, see no single point awarded. Ball placed on the 35 yard line. (No single point for any punt or field goal attempt that bounces in and/or rolls through the end zone, untouched, by the situational receiving team.) Any tipped field goal or punt, by a defender, becomes a live ball until the loose ball is retrieved and the ball recoverer is downed by contact. If such a ball goes out of bounds then the last team to touch the ball is deemed the possessor of the ball. The kicking team needs the ball to go out of bounds beyond the first down market, if kicking team is last to touch the ball before it goes out of bounds, when the kick occurs on third down. If not then the ball gets turned over on downs. If any such tipped or batted ball goes directly through and out of the end zone then no point(s) awarded. Ball placed on the 35 yard line. Ball is also placed on the 35 yard line whenever the field goal goes wide right or left, or the receiving team decides to concede the single point, inside the end zone on a failed and tipped punt or failed field goal. (A single point sacrifice for solid field position.) The width of the field could also be reduced, by 10 yards, and the teams could play "10 players versus 10 players " to compliment the smaller field maintaining the 3 down, one yard off the line of scrimmage, one foot in bounds to complete a pass, place the ball on the one approach to the rules. 110 yards between the goal lines to be maintained. "10 vs 10" would see a big reduction in player payroll and raise the bar re: players making the grade every training camp. The proposed US expansion CFL playing field dimensions: 130 yards in length (Including end zones) and 55 yards in width. "10 vs 10" could see 5: offensive linemen/tight end, 1: QB, and any combo of 4: receivers/running backs on offense. (Also a Canadian player quota should be required of all future U.S teams. The same Canadian quota # on both sides of the border.) The league could also adopt a new name for the league. "The Continental Football League." (CFL). U.S. Expansion cities off the top of my head: Brooklyn Hartford, Portland San Diego San Jose ST Louis Sacramento San Antonio Billings Boise Birmingham Albequerque Salt Lake City

Give me the Okanagan Vines, Lethbridge Thumpers, Red Deer Corridors, Thunder Bay Sleeping Giants, Sudbury Nickelbacks, Niagara Peaches, Mississauga Meadows, Trifluviens de Trois-Rivières, Rapides de Laval and Aluminiumeurs de Saguenay before all those teams in the U.S. and pre-existing markets (although, if there must be a 2nd team in the Montreal area, the West Island Maroons would be a better bet than a team in the downtrodden East End -- shout-out to the old home town).

I'd keep it at 10 teams. You cannot just simply slap teams where ever you want. You need owner(s) with money, a stadium, and a fanbase. If the CFL expands to 10 teams, I'd like to see one of 2 things with scheduling. Remove divisions. Every team plays all other teams twice. Playoffs will be just the 6 best teams. or Keep divisions. Every team plays divisional opponents 3 times, and plays teams in the other division once, except for the team that finished the same place in the divisional standings in the previous year, in which they face them twice. A west division team that finishes first will face the first place east division team twice, 2nd place west team will face off against 2nd place east team twice etc. Playoffs will be as they are right now.

@secondguess3128

An 11-team league with Quebec and Atlantic (either Halifax or Moncton) is not an unrealistic possibility. Unless the CFL is prepared to go to a 20-game season, it would have to maintain 2 divisions -- since teams couldn't play everyone twice. But in a fantasy world of 13 teams -- including Windsor and London -- 3 divisions work really well. The West would stay as is; Ottawa, Atlantic and the Quebec teams would be in the East; and the remaining Ontario teams would form the Central. Top 2 teams in each division make the playoffs, with 2 wildcards -- the latter of which would be 3rd and 4th seeds in the 1st wildcard's division. I'm sorry the CFL didn't go this route in 1995, instead of the unwieldy alignment of 5 teams in one division and 8 in the other. It could have split Canadian teams into East and West divisions, while adding the all-U.S. South -- but Larry Smith and the board of governors were obsessed with a Canada-vs.-U.S. Grey Cup.

I like the creativity. I'd personally love to see the CFL expand with a sustainable model this time. Biggest issues of course are 1. Stadiums, 2. TV deals to allow more money to raise salary caps and compete with XFL, USFL for talent. If the CFL went to such small markets as the Okanagan, Victoria, PEI, Newfoundland, etc, without decent stadiums and no additional TV money, it would either fail bitterly OR they would have to become a semi professional league, which would be all the artillery needed for Toronto to get an NFL team, the CFL to lose a major TV deal and in essence be no better than U-sports. In fact if that happened the Grey Cup would probably be ceded back to Canadian University Football. That Said, I think what WOULD WORK is a team in Quebec City, even before Atlantic Canada. Bigger population centre, longer football culture and perfect rivalry for Montreal. Then bring on two more franchises within the next few years (always in twos to for a balanced schedule). The next two would be an Atlantic Team and perhaps a US city. It would have to be a city that loves football but could NEVER get an NFL franchise. Portland would be a great option (there was a CFL exhibition game there in the 90s Calgary played Toronto if my memory serves). But other choices might be Boise or Possibly Spokane. All these cities are relatively close to the Canadian border, would have stadiums that could be used until a better one could be built, they all have a football history and (with the small exception of Portland) would never be big enough to get an NFL team. Anyways, just my two cents.

Everyone seems to forget that they already tried to expand to the US and failed in 1993-1995 after folding in 3 seasons. Just expand to 12 teams: - Halifax, Nova Scotia (needs a new stadium) - Moncton, New Brunswick (expand existing stadium) - Quebec City (new stadium) Stadiums are to be 25,000 expandable to 35,000 for the Coupe Grey Cup. Build minor stadiums in other Provincial capitals/major cities and perhaps the Territories too for annual pre season games and maybe the occasional regular season neutral ground game.

This video should of stopped after the Halifax team, I’m American so it may be a bit off of the Canadian perspective but part of the charm of this sport comes from the fact that any team can win the cup, all you have to do is win like maybe a bit less than half your games then your ein the playoffs, then beat a team about your level then the next game is to play to go to the grey cup, then beat a team that’s probably lost about like 4 or 5 regular season games, then just play a team just like that but for the grey cup. Go Ti-Cats

Agree with the American cities. A problem with the original U.S. expansion was those teams did not have import/non-import quotas. That allowed American teams the freedom to stock their rosters with all American players while not being required to have half the players as Canadian. Perhaps future American franchises would have roster restrictions based on geographical areas. (i.e. Portland, OR would need half its roster from players residing from the Pacific Northwest.)

Matt - you may be on to something there. Forget the American teams and players but what about making the Canadian starters on the current teams be from a specific geo region? All BC Canadians from BC. All Ottawa Canadians from a given region including Ottawa - etc. There would be a hell of an incentive for the CFL teams to work on player development at the high school, Junior, and Uni levels. Hell of a shot in the arm for U-sports.

I don’t think the Canadian player quota was an issue during CFLs last US expansion. But I agree that in lieu of the Canadian quota a US team can fill the spots with local talent 50 miles for the stadium that were born or played high school or college ball. It will help the team market players easier to the fan base.

@whackedoutwrestlingpodcast1404
@whackedoutwrestlingpodcast1404 5 жыл бұрын
Even the Canadian Player quota doesn't change the fact that, quite frankly, the quality of football in the US is far, far, far better than the quality of football in Canada. Like, good enough so that the "you played college ball within 50 miles of the stadium" would mean if you give those CFL teams to pretty much any major school in the Power Five conferences, they could just say "okay, we're signing every senior from the Power 5 school who didn't make the NFL" and run roughshod on the CFL. "You must have been born 50 miles from the stadium" is the fairer way to go, and even that's not perfect- if you put a team in the right places in Texas, even just their high school players who don't make the league would stand a chance.

I am an American who sometimes follow the CFL. Of course here in The States, the NFL and NCAA college football is much more popular. I think this video went south after talking about having more than 12 teams in the CFL. If I was the commissioner, I would first add an expansion team in Halifax, NS so the East Division would have a fifth team. Then, I would add an additional team in both the West and East divisions(Victoria, BC and Quebec City, QC) to round out the 12-team CFL. American cities should not get a CFL team because Canadian football fields are too big! To all the American cities that don't have a NFL team: Get a Arena Football League team.

INTERESTING TOPIC! My Suggestions: first of all, with the existing teams rename the Red Blacks the Ottawa Redcoats (suggesting drill and success, red jerseys, grey pants, white socks, same black helmet & logo). Then expand, first to the Atlantic region, the Halifax Commandos (suggesting sudden attacks and raids, navy blue jersey and white). Then the Quebec Voyageurs to rival the Alouettes (suggesting hardy fur trappers paddling, green or buckskin jerseys, canoe logo?). Finally, the Victoria (or Vancouver Island?) Hi Ballers (or Islanders? Suggesting Pacific lumberjacks, Sky blue, green and gray). A high baller is someone who over achieves, a leader who prevails. Anyways, 12 teams is plenty for Canada; don't want to thin the talent out too much. Redesign that Alouette logo and no more same colour jerseys and pants (ugly). Love Canada, Football, the CFL and NFL!

I like the idea of having US teams only in the North, but I would have narrowed the field down a little more... make the CFL "The Sport of the 49th Parallel." Got a layout for a 20 team league (12 CAN, 8 US, new teams named in full): Canadian Conference: West: B.C., Calgary, Saskatchewan, Edmonton Central: Winnipeg, London Monarchs, Hamilton, Toronto East: Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec Bulldogs, Atlantic (Halifax) Schooners American Conference: West: Portland Crows, Seattle Orcas, Salt Lake City Bighorns, Minneapolis Loons East: Hartford Corsairs, Detroit Mammoths, Rochester Blues, Milwaukee Marauders Season can either be 24 weeks (22 games, division twice, everyone else once) or 21 weeks (20 games, division four times, 1 conference division, 1 non-conference division). Either way, playoffs are division winners + 3 wild cards.

Quebec CIty based on the success of Laval's university side in both wins and attendance, along with a bigger metro population area, is actually a better economic choice than Halifax. For some reason the CFL has been able to (sort of) make a go of it year after year, even though their average attendance in most cities is in the 20,000 range (if not lower). If you take Green Bay, or the US college market example as a guidepost, states with small populations, like Kansas or Arkansas still manage to fill stadiums of 50,000 or more regularly, as football, unlike the other sports, is just a one day / week commitment, and that day is usually a weekend when you can afford to drive a long distance to a game.

I agree...Halifax appears to be thiiis close to actually happening, and after that I can see Quebec City and maybe expanding to 12 teams...considering how the CFL does the best in the smaller markets (ie, not Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver - at least not currently), I think getting the smaller-yet-sizeable cities with at least 200,000 people in the region with teams would be possible. That's why I think Victoria, Kelowna, Moncton, Quebec City, St. John's, and another team or two in southern Ontario is very possible.

Love Our CFL (bigger field, 12 players, 3 downs)! My Expansion Suggestions: Halifax Commandos, Quebec Voyageurs (as stated; rivalry vs Montreal) and the Victoria Coasters (Islanders or Hi-ballers). Rename Ottawa the Red coats. Truly coast to coast, 2 navy and 3 provincial government cities to draw fans from.
@secondguess3128
@secondguess3128 2 жыл бұрын
To each their own -- my preference would be the Atlantic Schooners (in Halifax . . . or even Moncton) and the Quebec Citadelles. But Redcoats would be an absolute non-starter for Ottawa. Unlike previous football iterations in the National Capital, the Redblacks promote themselves in 2 languages -- the French "Rouge et Noir" is a common naming convention that actually works better than the English equivalent. in addition, a handle like Redcoats -- which, besides translating poorly, honours British armed forces -- would go over like a lead balloon among francophones.

This video peaked after the idea of a tenth CFL team in Halifax. Having teams in Moncton, Prince Edward Island, St. Johns (Newfoundland), Moncton, Windsor and Saskatoon, are just non-starters right off the bat. Too small of a market, and/or are in the shadow of bigger sports teams. A U.S Expansion revival also won't go down well. A focus on growing an American fanbase in markets within reasonable proximity, would be a wiser strategy. Burlington, Vermont, would be an example for Montreal. In my opinion, the magic number for the CFL is twelve teams, in two divisions of six. Top four teams in each division qualify for the playoffs. No crossovers. The big upside of this, being an extra playoff game in each division, taking the total number of playoff games to seven. As for the extra teams, my preferred choices for the CFL in the next 20 years would be... Halifax - Representing Atlantic Canada, giving a true coast-to-coast presence. Quebec - Another Francophone market to compete with Montreal in the province. Victoria - Representing Vancouver Island and also part of the Vancouver media market.

PEI is way to small to house any kind of team. Take a look at the AHL team and how they dealt with Charlottetown. It's just too small of a population to house any team. St. Johns is in a similar way, but at least they make the 100k population cut.

12 is the most the league could possibly handle IMO, Halifax is going to happen, but I hear they're calling themselves the Atlantic Schooners and will represent the 4 Atlantic provinces of NL, NS, NB & PEI, the others are too small a market to support a CFL team, and football is not all that popular in NL (that's coming from a Newfie). If I were running things: the Schooners would join the East division, expand with the Northern glaciers (based out of Whitehorse but representing the 3 territories). Joining the west division and the Quebec City Renaissance joining the East, that way every province and territory is represented and the divisions are even, As for playoffs, I'm fine with the current 6-bracket format.

@secondguess3128
@secondguess3128 2 жыл бұрын
Unless global warming or something increases Saskatchewan's population by about 5-fold, there's not a chance of Saskatoon getting a CFL team. The Riders' success is tied to their identity as a regional team, with rabid support from all over the province. That dynamic would undoubtedly falter with competing cities of barely 200,000 each.

You know, I thought of that, but the populations are just too small...if I were to go to a northern city though, I would probably try Whitehorse first, if anything, since it's the largest city that far north (outside of Alaska) with a population of 23,000 or so; Anchorage is about as big as Regina or Saskatoon at over 200,000 people, and Fairbanks and Juneau are just a bit bigger than Whitehorse at over 30,000.

A 12-team league is a great idea. Add London, Ontario; Halifax or Moncton; Victoria, BC or Quebec City. I also like the idea of expanding into the mid-size US cities that the NFL wouldn't go near but let's not go through that 90s fiasco again. No Memphis Mad Dogs, Birmingham Barracudas, or Shreveport Pirates. I've heard credible ideas to look to northern border states like Spokane, Washington; Boise, Idaho; or Fargo, North Dakota. Hell, these might be more reasonable places to expand than the Canadian cities I've mentioned. They're football-mad, close to Canada, and they might have deeper pockets to build or expand existing stadiums and field a team than Halifax is willing to do.
@AshTrizey
@AshTrizey 6 жыл бұрын
12 teams seems the most realistic. Halifax and Quebec City to the East Division and throw London in the West Division and you got an even league. Once Victoria's population reaches closer to 500k it could be feasible. Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo has the population but is too close to Toronto and Hamilton so they could oversaturate the market.
