NO SLÁINE NO GAIN with Simon Bisley, Glenn Fabry, Clint Langley and Simon Davis. A panel from the 40 Years of Thrill-power Festival, hosted by Michael Molcher.
Four creators - and we didn’t think it too many! A panel filled with iconic artists discussing their work on Pat Mills’ Celtic saga, from Glenn Fabry’s incredible black and white line work of the ‘80s to Simon Bisley’s groundbreaking painted art on The Horned God and into the 21st Century with Clint Langley and Simon Davies.

Good to see Glenn Fabry finally arrive - I was half expecting David Pugh to heroically step in to fill for him while we were waiting.

I love how they all look a bit like their representations of Slaine. Especially Clint. He looks almost photorealistic.

I guess they were the only four artists that put themselves into their work that way. Not sure about second & third artists, MacMahon and Bellardenelli. The latter could be younger Massimo, who knows, but of Angela Kincaid's work. It took a while for the very first Slaine to grow on me as did McMahon's....

Glenn was my Slaine some of his artwork was stunning , was not a Bisley fan at the time possibly because I was not a fan of all coloured strips for a long while and probably due to the quality of the printing. Warmed up to his amazing work now mind, Clint and then Simon have moved l;aine forward and is still so good even now.

Angie’s original episode is a masterpiece. She captured the look of Armies perfectly. I wish she had done more Slaine.

There was an actual Irish king called Slaine as well as the obvious reference to the hero CuChulainn. The best physical description of Slaine or Cuchulainn is in Thomas Kinsellas book The Tain, where he is described from head to toe, physical description, clothes, armour etc.

Loved Glenn Fabry's painted Demon Killer (so disappointed when copyist Dermot Power took over). Hailing from Colchester I was all over that strip! Bisleys Horned God was, of course, something else, but in truth it was the script by Mills that made history. So epic, so mythic, wrapping up the whole Sláine legend... Technical/satanical advisor Tony Skinner used to be guitarist/cult leader of a band called Cat Genetica that we used to drink and smoke dope to, in (and get kicked out of) a pub called the Oliver Twist! Thats right; back in the day. McMahons original artwork won me over to Sláine when I was a kid. After initially getting the arse-ache that a sword n sorcery story DARE show it's beardy face in MY 2000ad. "This ain't science fiction!!" I whinged. But McMahons work blew the dust off that genre and I was warped from then on. And I'll always pronounce it "Slayne" - like Sam Slade! These three artists are the old gods from the Land of the Young for me. Seeing two of them on this vid was great. I assume it was off for a pint and a roll up ( and some back-slapping, competitive banter ) straight after. Have one on me, gents. Thanks

Btw, in case any of read this, I'm looking for another Slaine art book that would have all the S. Bisley art work used on the inside cover in every Slaine episode he did that was featured in the original progs. Of course, I could source them out on Ebay. I have several of the originals already on the bog roll progs. No, wait, these just after those.

Always thought Glen's Slaine was some what based on Jack Nicholson. Not going to argue with Simon Bisley how the Glen Fabry for the late 80's looked more like his take on the character. Just never saw him that way myself.
