Thanks. I find one in France few days ago. Welcome here.

Great job on this Mark, I like these clocks a lot and have many, I used to have a collection on my fireplace mantle but most are in storage now and I keep one running in my office,

Once fixed, the secret for them to run properly is having a firm shelf for them to site on as the slightest vibration stops the escape mechanism. a display cabinet on a thick carpet is no use, a shelf on a wall much better. Good luck.

Thanks, and yes they all have to be in a stable location.

Hi Mark I have a similar clock to the one in the video could you possibly tell what the spec of the torsion spring is thanks

Nice job getting it running. I like your idea of tracing the suspension spring assembly on a piece of paper to get accurate placement of the parts on the replacement suspension spring.

When working with the clock parts close on your bench you only have to slip with your tools or drop the clock body and you will likely damage the parts and make yourself a mess of trouble.

Fortunately I have been careful enough to not have that happen. Thanks for watching!

You need a suspension spring size .004", (.102mm). You can get it through the Horolovar company in the US, call 740-277-7083, ask for John or David. You can also find them on eBay. The problem is if you do not have the old spring you will not know how long it needs to be as the clock is too old for that information to be available in the Horolovar 400 Day Clock Repair Guide Book. You might find out the length by calling them directly.

Hi Mark, thanks for the video. It's a pity that there is no illustration in the book of the suspension springs of clocks of that era. I have a 1908 Kienzle (plates 1383 or 1435) with 4 ball pendulum. My clock doesn't work, I have done all the cleaning and oiling but I can't get it to beat, but maybe the problem is that I didn't put the right spring or the right length. The book gives me the possibility to put two springs, .0036 and .0038 but I don't know which one is the right one and I don't know what length I should put. I can see that at some point the paddles of the anchor do not release the escape wheel, this happens sometimes with the left paddle and sometimes with the right one, I can't find the exact point, I'm going crazy. I would appreciate your advice, greetings !

Hi Charly, I would suggest you get in touch with Horolovar. You can either email them at horolovar@gmail.com and include photos of your clock, including the back plate, or call them at 740-277-7083 and ask for John or David. They can tell you exactly which spring you need as well as how long it has to be and the distance between the top block and the fork. Good luck and thanks for watching!

Hi Charly, I saw this message after replying to your other one. Until you know you have the right spring, you won't be able to get into beat.

Thanks. I have the identical made by Gustav Becker. My horror story is when the clock begins running too fast or too slow and I have to turn the screw on the torsion and fear to break the spring.
@mherzog75 ай бұрын
Why would turning the screw on the base of the pendulum break the spring? It won’t.
@vsevolodozerov89475 ай бұрын
@@mherzog7 Thanks. Well, I have to hold the pendulum and it is difficult to keep it stable and the tension of the spring changes. Some time ago I experimented with putting miniscule pieces of metal on the pendulum. I wonder, putting it nearer to the centre will make it run faster or not?
@mherzog75 ай бұрын
You will never get a precise setting by adding weights to the pendulum. If you hold the pendulum steady with the thumb and fore finger of one hand, you can use your other hand to turn the key a little bit, to adjust the speed. That won’t cause damage to the suspension spring.

Thank you for this video, it helped be get my clock adjusted correctly. My clock is identical to yours but has the name URANIA just under the #12. I am assuming it is circa 190? also. I ordered a tension spring as a spare. how long is the usual lifespan of a tension spring?
@mherzog79 ай бұрын
Thank you, from what I have seen, Urania clocks were made from 1905-10. If you take a photo of the back plate I may be able to identify it for you. I do not know how long a spring lasts. You can email me the photo.
@dperry4289 ай бұрын
The spring will never wear out. It needs to be replaced when it sustains physical damage from mishandling the clock. Keep kids away from it; they like to spin the pendulum and put a permanent twist in the wire, requiring a replacement.
@quaest6 ай бұрын
So you didn't need to take out and clean and lube the main spring?
@mherzog76 ай бұрын
No, and it has been keeping perfect time since. I just wind it a bit every 3 or 4 months.
@quaest6 ай бұрын
@@mherzog7 I'm working on the anniversary clock right now too and I can't figure out why it won't run. How did you know you don't need to fix the main spring?
@mherzog76 ай бұрын
Did you let down the spring, take the clock apart, clean gears, plates, all the parts, lube with a synthetic clock oil, reassemble, use a new suspension spring, and wind the spring just a few turns? Then put the clock in beat?Even if you need a new spring it should run long enough to know it’s working.

Thanks for great video instruction! Are these spring lengths and fork location dimensions available on web somewhere? That book is too expensive for most hobbyists :(
@mherzog7 Жыл бұрын
I do not know of any other websites that offer the information you need. When I bought my book, about two years ago, it cost $35. I see it on Amazon for $150, but also on eBay for $49 and free shipping. If you plan on repairing any of these 400 day clocks it really is a must have. To send one clock out for repairs could cost as much as $250.

Hats off to you for accepting a new challenge. The more clocks you do it the more comfortable you feel. It is a great hobby. Any plans on polishing the brass? How do you adjust the beat , I noticed there was no saddle like the modern ones that you turn left and right to set it in beat. Thanks.
@mherzog72 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I chose not to polish the brass as I liked that it looked over 100 years old. If you look again at the video, you will see how I show the set screw that holds he top block, which I turned left or right depending on how I had to adjust the beat.
