His grandpa financed some huge payments in his life (college car, HOUSE) and he still messed his finances up. I feel sad for him and his family. The kids, no matter how they try to hide it, will feel their parents stress. I willingly quit my extracurriculars when I was a kid because of my parent's finances. You seem to have forgotten to remind him that those 401k loan terms usually require immediate re-payment upon the loss of employment. Failing to repay causes them to report the outstanding amount as a non-qualified distribution which is subject to tax penalty if you are below retirement age.

I was a pizza delivery guy in the late 90s, I averaged about $10/hr while the company only charged $1 for delivery and that chain is still around today. Just for grins and giggles at the grocery store yesterday I priced some organic milk compared to just regular milk. The organic milk was $6.29 for a HALF gallon; regular milk was $2.29 for a half gallon. I wanted to buy some to see what it tastes like. He likely won't take ANY advice let alone KID advice. I have never understood why anyone would need to ask for financial advice; just have more coming in than going out.

I've known more parents than I should who are Exactly like this. Because I'm a woman, they also used to derive great joy at any chance to throw around the discussion-ending "dig" that I don't know anything about X bc I don't have kids. Getting out of the house to do stuff with his kids does NOT have to cost money!! My dad was very poor when I was a kid and he was homeless and sometimes lived at camp sites for weeks on end or his car I saw him only on Sundays. Sometimes we went to the mall but when money got extra tight we played tennis, basketball, volleyball, soccer, with equipment that was years old and got a low cost lunch. Taking your kids out does not mean these fancy Brunswick zones, batting cages, expensive dinners and movies etc that can cost hundreds of dollars for a few hours. Your kids don't care what they are doing as long as it's with their Dad!! They care WHO they are with not WHAT they are doing.

The excuses for having to go out to eat constantly always make me laugh. I spent $25 at Target a few years ago and got my kids a thermos each. If we are out of the house during lunch or dinner time, I warm up left overs and they eat from their thermos. I have a small cooler bag that I put a salad in for me and whatever my husband wants. Now that it's summer we are at the pool alot. We bring food and drinks there too. My mom used to go to the ATM every weekend to take out cash for that week's spending. She took out a particular amount. A set amount was for my dad to spend on like whatever he wanted/needed. And a larger chunk was for my mom because it was her whatever money and the grocery money for that week. Bills and shared expenses all that came out of checking. The whatever money was theirs to do literally whatever. Spend on general nonsense or stash it and save up to buy more expensive nonsense. It's a pretty good system imo. Especially for people who aren't credit card people.

I’m confused. They pay for a private school that is hybrid and only two days a week with homeschool the other days. What’s the point of paying for two days a week? Maybe I misunderstood. Also, the kids are eating at Chick-Fil-A, McDonald’s, and Taco Bell but he’s worried about the quality of their milk. Milk isn’t even necessary because protein and calcium can be gotten elsewhere.

Going to school part time seems to be a lot more common these days. My nephew does that. Makes sense to me, he gets the social interaction and fundamentals covered, but can focus on more individual stuff at home than could in large group setting

My brother did this! I think it’s a great option. He got the social interaction and some structure, and then my mom (a very strict asian tiger parent) got to make sure he was staying on top of his education. It also allowed him more time for sports and exploration while he was home. I was full time homeschooled, and while I did get a very rigorous education (better than my brother’s), I would have loved more social time and getting a break from my strict mom.

If your home is run like that (SAHM is the CFO, working dad), they still need to have monthly meetings, like a business meeting, to go over the state of finances, the budget, and figure out whether leaks exist and plan to plug them.

Same I’m the oldest of 7. We constantly were living in our van and many times had to skip meals. Now that my husband and I make over $220k I still can’t even spend a penny. Any healthy church would emphasize giving of your “time, gifts, talents and possessions” I have had many seasons in life when what I had to offer was my self, not money- outside of a few dollars. That is how you serve, with what you have. I hope he reads this. That being said, $1,800 for “wants” a month is not a hard spot. So yeah, give money if that’s easier than time. Just don’t act like your broke while you’re doing it.

He mentioned he and his wife did Dave Ramsey's plan, but he also mentioned they do not use a budget and they don't sit together and make a budget. That's the entire reason why Dave's plan works. Small steps, but it all is executed via the budget. Not sure why I missed this video, but as a 33 year old with 3 kids I'm happy I got to watch this one. This guy needs to see the 50 year old who had his son in motorsports and the investment didn't pay off. Sometimes as parents, we live vicariously through our kids and that can be a huge money pit for the middle class. We heard that with the mom's issues with her parents' spending when she was a minor. Also, I can't understand being okay not paying your parents the money you owe. He's obviously enabled and content with it and so is the wife. Wish as a married couple, they would have done this together. Hopefully, they can return on a future episode and we can see some progress. Lastly, as a Christian, we should tithe and give, but we must take care of our family first. Priorities, priorities, priorities. I do wish them the best!
