When my mom and I immigrated to the US from Venezuela, the best thing she did was not open a credit card. She had a debit card with a checking/savings acct and she cash budgeted EVERYTHING. She was extremely disciplined and we never went without anything. Love my mama ❤
@T.S.000

Glad to hear that everything worked out for you & your mother. The thing is that, if your mother is "very discipline" with her budgeting, spending, and paying bills, then she could have been able to take advantage using the credit card. As for me, I try to use my 3 credit cards on, pretty much, everything (I do not use the debit card - look up advantages of credit card vs debit card). And at the end of the month, I would pay everything off. For the last 10-15 years, I have been getting a few thousand dollars back in cash rewards from those 3 cards every single year. And I have never, once, paid for annual fee, interest charge, late fee, or any other fees. Additionally, my credit score has been pushed to well over 800.

@@T.S.000 that sounds awesome! I think her hesitation came from not completely understanding the financial system here in the US and like Juan mentioned, the uncertainty of wether or not we would be able to stay in the US (so owing any kind of debt would put us in a very difficult situation).

As soon as he started talking about his immigration process I knew exactly where he came from, because.. same. Coming here and having to wait months for a work permit and depend so much on having everything done on time is incredibly stressful and also costly, I think people born and raised here in the US truly have no idea of how difficult it is. To add on that knowing a lot of the people that move to the us have no idea how this country works and make so many financial mistakes and wreck their credit so early on. I know he will figure it out but it so much hard work, kudos to him for putting his situation out there for all the people that have no clue how hard this process is and how expensive it is.

I was married in December, 1976. I was in the Air Force, and wore my uniform. My bride wore a $99 dress, off the rack at Sears. Ring was $49, for a 0.02 carat diamond. You could barely see it. My mother-in-law made a beautiful cake, and we were married in their living room. I paid $20 for a US Air Force Reserve Chaplain...Chaplain Willenbring. The ENTIRE wedding cost us $168, and we have been married now for 46+ years. This is about $3.60 per year of marriage. I would like to get it down to $3 a year..this will happen in 2033.

It's insane how expensive and honestly predatory with how many expectations society puts on us and how conditioned girls are to have amazing fairy tale weddings since they are young. These videos you make are incredible, I have a suggestion that you could have a giant whiteboard where you draw the person and you write down everything they have (cash, assets), their income, and then you write down all their debts (car loan, credit card debt, mortgage) and then there monthly budget. This could allow anyone you help to visualize their entire situation very clearly.

The Catholic Church does not charge for wedding ceremonies. (Although it’s customary to pay the clergy a small stipend of $20 a pop.) There is no reason to spend $15,000 on a wedding!

Hey, Caleb! I love your content and I’m always watching your videos on my downtime. I want to thank you for always emphasizing therapy and improving mental health on a daily basis with multiple videos. As a current student, majoring in psychology with a specialization in clinical/counseling psych (hoping to achieve my dream of being a therapist after I finish my masters degree), I’m always on board with improving mental health and getting the help individuals need on a daily basis. Thank you for bringing light to such a taboo topic.❤️

Thank you for making these videos. I'm 30 and I got really lucky with finances. My grandfather and father taught me everything. Nothing in middle or highschool was explained ever, there isn't real good advice out there until the last few years. People you do business with make it seem good where as it's a bank or anywhere. You're totally unbiased and that's extremely hard to find these days

Immigration isn't cheap or free. My wife came here 3 years ago as a nurse with a green card, and the processing fee's we still owe to her Aunt(who runs an agency) and its around 8k. Luckily, her Aunt isn't rushing or pushing for the payment otherwise we would be in the same point. She never needed to get a immigration lawyers or anything like that as well, which is fortunate. I was born and raise her in the US, so I never understood how expensive and cumbersome the immigration process was until I met her. On a side note: for those non-religious: The Church wedding is what start life as a married couple for Catholics. Without a church wedding, catholics are not considering married because its not recognized in the church. While it makes no financial sense, from a religious sense having a church wedding gives them the peace of mind to know they are truly married. I will note, they could have had a simple church wedding with a simple reception, so not making excuses for him going into debt for it. ***Please do not attack me or debate religion with me, I did not mentioned this to start a religious debate just putting some context is all as a catholic myself***.

@@anthonylozano8035 yes, not defending him bc he could have kept the wedding to something minimal and to what they could afford. Just understand possible why he had to have a church wedding(not sure how religious he is or he real reason, just guessing).

Hey Caleb! Hope you are well. I have learned a lot from your videos and they are a real eye opener. Thankfully none of my spending habits are as bad as the ones highlighted in most of your videos, your audits have helped me see ways I could end up in a spiraling financial situation. If I could suggest one thing, possibly also bring on a few people that would have a 10/10 financial audit, I think that would help a lot too as I think a lot of people that suddenly start making a lot of money could really learn how someone making that much or more actually lives a comfortable yet financially responsible life. Thansk!
