The E55s are bulletproof. They are the best super sedan of the entire 2000s if you want to judge on practicality and reliability. All Mercedes with the M113 engine are bulletproof... I'm on my third E55, my first W211 (first were W210s)... My first W210 sold, on the original engine and transmission, with 305k miles on it. Ran like it did the day I bought it. My second one had its life cut short by a Cadillac Escalade rear ending it on the 405 in Santa Monica, and it was replaced with a W211 which now has 150k miles on it. I intend to run it to 300k, and there's nothing that indicates to me that the car won't be able to do that without issue. The W211 E55 is the simplest of the "super sedans" of that era by a very wide margin. You've got a stout single cam V8 with no variable timing and very little high tech wizardry. Just good old fashioned horsepower mated to an impossible to kill 722.6 transmission, the same unit that was used in the S65/SL65/CL65 AMG V12 cars that made nearly 800 torque... the 722.6 can take that and be reliable for years on end, then I can surmise it's hardly breaking a sweat at 516 ft-lbs of torque. Great cars, with so much less to go wrong than the competition - which was the E39 M5 (2003), E60 M5 (V10 nightmare engine, SMG semi-auto nightmare clutch), the C5 Audi RS6 (bespoke 450 horsepower twin turbo V8 with 4 radiators, and a requirement to drop the engine out of the car every time you need to do /any/ maintenance to the engine, and mated to a ZF 5 speed auto that can't handle the power), the C6 Audi S6 and RS6 (Lamborghini Gallardo 5.2 V10, same issues as the C5 - engine out for anything, and ZF 5 speed auto that can't take the power), and perhaps the first gen Cadillac CTS-V if you want to include that (broken motor mounts *constantly* and any hooning around and the differential blows up)... that was the competition of its day. The E55 is lightyears ahead of them in reliability. They're simple to run, cheap to maintain (very few AMG specific parts to the engine - most of it is standard M113 from an E500), and cheap to fix when they do break.

Yep tranny is build for a 1000NM was used for all Mercedes up to 2007 that for a reason :) Bullet proof if just fluids are replaced else it dies and it dies really badley hahaha. Love my E55 AMG 2004 LOVE IT a real beast had it for 7 years I drive it to the end of my days trust me

I bought my W220 S500 on a whim with 240 thousand miles on the odometer a few months ago and it runs like a top. Only problems I've had are old flex discs needing replacement after some thrashing. The car doesnt blow smoke, feels powerful as all hell, and sounds fantastic with open headers. I want to take it to half a million miles but I'm thinking the timing cover o rings ought to be looked at along with the plastic tensioners. Once those o rings go it's all over for the crank bearings. I'd love to see it hit half a million on stock head gaskets and piston rings!

I dont like the idea of a car sitting and it hard to find a high mileage well maintained one in Virginia. If one hasnt been maintained well can you preserve it by proper maintenance or do you need it meticulously handled all the time. Dont really want a money pit on an older car but Im absolutely in love with it

Loved the video. I have a 3x Benz's 38yrs old 300SD 300K, 16yo E320 349,000Miles on it, and 2001 S55 AMG M113 150,000miles. I'm one of those hardcore home mechanic's, but I never opened the top end on the M112 and M113's engines. The 300SD diesel i had to perform routine valve adjustments every ~100K. None use oil. The old school OM617 diesels and M112,M113 engines are the most reliable engines every manufactured in history. The M112,M113 engines have a special silicone crystal lined aluminum cylinder/block that was polished like glass, acid etched to remove aluminum particles and leave behind only the hard silicone, then polished again. And everything else is polished and forged. all have 8Liters if oil which is probably another reason they last so long, always getting plenty of fresh cool oil. They use a sophisticated thermoconductivity sensor to monitor oil condition and tailor change intervals according to specific driving conditions, not predetermined mileage intervals. Usually my oil changes have been every 10-12K miles. They all have the 722.xxx variant 4spd (300SD) and 5spd (E320,S55) automatic transmission is also the best transmission in the world. The transmission is still built and used in many production and race cars around the world today.

Is the car in dyno mode? It dosen't sound like its revving close to 6100rpm where the car makes peak power (about 410+whp). Clearly this is a healthy E55 since there is 450wtq + 18% = 531lb-ft. Needs to rev higher. You should be making 400+whp.
@LegitStreetCars7 жыл бұрын
Yes in dyno mode. Not sure if its the way this dyno is loaded but about 5500 rpm is all we could get on those super long pulls. I agree a pull in the 6k range would have likely produced even more power. Alex

sam spezza: It quite obviously can not be a fixed horsepower number, though neither is it a fixed percentage. If a transmission has a fixed loss of (e.g.) 38bhp, that would mean the engine would have to make more than 38bhp just to get the wheels turning, which is clearly stupid. Losses increase with increasing engine speed and torque, though not in a linear manner.

Gregory Trane I would be careful with dealer maintenance... a reputable Indy shop is a better direction. Some dealerships aren't out to help you but make money any way possible.
@gregorytrane78287 жыл бұрын
Joey McMahon Jr It all depends on the dealer. Consumers can always file complaints to the corporate headquarters. Something dealers don't want, as well as other avenues of correction. With independent garages or dealers, you're in a situation with limited legal resources that can be more time consuming if there is a problem. I've always had better luck with authorized dealers. But if independent dealers or garages work for others, that's OK too.
@777jones7 жыл бұрын
I agree it depends on the dealer. Plenty of dealers have superior knowledge to an indy shop and are priced equally. In other cases, you get a superior indy shop and a crook dealer. But in general a dealer's best tech is superior to the indy shop. Just my 2c on it.

So I have seen something similar to this that was done with a new Toyota tundra compared to a tundra with 50k miles. The truck with 50k miles had been properly maintained and performed better on the dyno than the new tundra. They attributed this difference to the breaking in of the engine/trans oil lines and seals. Essentially they said the older one had an easier time being lubricated and sealed because the galleys and oil passages along with the cylinder walls and pistons had been broken in. 50k mile tundra had faster 0-60mph time, more torque, more hp, and something else I don't remember. Anyway, I think brand new engines have a little more resistance trying to cycle than a broken in engine. Which is why they make a little less power.

I sold my e55 and happy with accord v6 at 280hp and it does not break.. trouble free life . as when car breaks it affects jobs, family because of worries which comes with e55. It comes with 55 more issues..lol

Hi Alex, I’ve a 2005 E55 AMG. Having problem with the coolant pump. Is this the part # for that coolant pump (Intercooler pump: Bosch 0392022010)? Thank you from Canada! Tristan.

Shouldn't the dyno measure the hp loss after you let go of the gas?

That car on a nice chilly night would be a whole different animal with over 4 at the wheels🤓

I would change the rod and main bearings just to be safe, piston rings should last another 400k miles.

I have a 2007 mercedes GL500 with 280kw motor. 127,000 km on the clock(60,000) miles. Sometimes it shows the right bank exhaust valve timing chain needs to be replaced (constant re adjustment) light comes up Does this mean serious bussiness and to replace? Does the engine need to be taken out to do the job? Cheers from South Africa

Alex, I live in the Chicago area. How do you feel about possibly working on my car? Been through a few mechanics and it's hard to find one I can trust. Let me know please. Thanks, Boris
