I agree with the insanity comment. I dont see how an AI can become insane. If equipped with feelings etc pissed off is a very good possibility. Lonely also but as it dosent really register the passage of time so it would just hibernate. That disgusted feeling would explain the destruction of imperium ships on its way out of the galaxy. To be insane would mean there is no point or goal to its actions. And escaping to safety from a race that wants to destroy you is the definition of sanity and preservation of itself....I also find it confusing for an AI to be corrupted by chaos. The definition of the warp implies it requires a soul to corrupt a subject. Other wise we would be over run by ants corrupted by chaos. This is backed up by the Eldar losing their souls to slanesh. If I am wrong please educate me.

As far as I can recall from the original lore, the STCs were just a DIY kit for start-up colonies to assemble miscellaneous technologies from whatever resources were locally available. Everything on the STCs qualified as 'low-tech' solutions by the standards of mankind during that period -- basically flat-pack garbage.

One thing I love about the STC lore is how it takes an absolutely ridiculously over-the-top universe and gives it a feeling of depth and gravitas. Even in a galaxy where planets explode and unreality literally creates madness, the inclusion of the STCs reminds you that there's also so much history and backstory and effort to flesh out a game that can boil down to 'my green bois shoot your bug boys harder than last round because they think they can" on the tabletop.

I always thought the reason STC were so rare was because they were sent along with the generational ships at the early days of humanity's initial expansion. Once FTL was possible, STC were no longer needed, and so they were moth balled or disassembled. This makes the search for STC even more tragic, because it's not the technology of humanity at it's zenith, but just the first stepping stone we took with us into the stars.
@georgedang449
@georgedang449 Жыл бұрын
It was never stated anywhere that STCs were decommissioned due to not being needed. But it was stated through many sources that STCs were rudimentary AIs that took known design principals and human science, designed equipment according to their colony's need on the fly via machine learning based on it, because it's simply not possible to store all combinations of all human knowledge in any database, nor is it desirable to make such an undertaking when nearly all of these possible designs won't have a use for whatever colonial environment encountered. It was strongly hinted, but not specifically stated that the reasons that so few complete STC library remains (there were some that remain, both corrupted and uncorrupted, in different lore stories) is because since they were AIs, they can and mostly were corrupted. Specific STC templates, on the other hands, are the results designed by STC AIs, that's only data, and not a soul that can be corrupted.

This totally make sense if you consider why STC are more likely to be found in remote locations. One of the reasons is the mechanicus already scoured any existed STCs in chartered territories. But another reason could be that settlements in remote areas where FTL travels and transmission were unreliable, STCs were still needed as the back up so people didn't decommission them.

My theory/head cannon is that a lot of the surviving AI/STCs either disappeared through time like the Spirit of Eternity or they're just hiding in plain sight like the mechanicus ships. Maybe they're really running everything from behind the scenes, but nobody in the Imperium can even see it, let alone try to stop it. Or maybe you have this super powerful AI, just biding its time: filtering through untold date slates and documents, just waiting for mankind to burn itself out, at which point it will rise again.

Great video Luetin. since getting into 40K I have also fantasised about there being a successful independent human empire as an offshoot of the imperium or originating from the DAoT, or both surviving somewhere in the 40k verse. I think It would be very cool for there to be small pockets non-imperium aligned human factions that are independent, operate as mercenaries or allied with xeno's. Or a combination of all that. But really this is what I love about 40k, it is a sandbox for you to create your own stories and narratives within. And that is the same reason I love many other franchises too.

These two vids on STC's and the Dark and Golden Ages really made me think. Among other things, we have always assumed that the war and the Age of Strife was humanity vs AI. Man versus Machine. But, what if it wasn't? What if it was AI vs AI? The Man of Stone AI group vs the Man of Iron AI group? That the men of gold (flesh humans) were really not part of the fight until the men of stone started to lose to their own AI creations (the men of iron). Then man, it's hubris, steps in to ":settle" the issue and get smashed and almost driven to extinction. But, man only became a target once it got involved. Once the all-vaunted humans were getting wiped out - if everyone believed the legends - that would move the Aeldari and others to get involved. And - given that Slaanesh is born right at this moment - what if the war with the men of iron somehow was the final trigger for not only the fall of man but the fall of the Eldar? Sorry - just really got me to thinking as to why encounters with AI - some describe themselves as ancient (men of stone) and are way more friendly toward the Imperium and Xenos while others are more modern and far less tolderant (men of iron). Also, what if the STC's were not meant to be stand alone all everythings but part of a nodal-neural network based on FTL communications outside the warp? Every node has the most basic things that there was no issue with falling into alien hands or so common - say a water purification plant - that it was just easier to send out copies with the nodes. But high tech or specialized things - say a Titan - were part of the 'cloud" of the network and sent to nodes only when necessary and then erased once used? Then when the network collapses, each STC is different - it only has the basic bits plus any of the specialized items that node was using at the moment. Paper transcriptions were taken of everything they thought important before the network collapsed. If the men of stone made the STCs in a neural network fashion, then it would be part of the men of iron network and would need to be destroyed. The individual nodes useful but essentialyl a single brain cell but without the full network, assumed to be less dangerous. But paper - is not dangerous, just in case they needed to go more an destroy the node. The mind spins.

Great video as always Luetin. To address a point you made about no one in the Imperium doing anything good with an STC. I imagine Guilliman could? He's a generally benevolent leader, at least by Primarch standards and would want to do something "good" with it. He would at the very least comprehend the magnitude of the discovery and would understand he would need to be heavily involved on how it would be used, especially given his direct interest in records of the Imperium.

I’m convinced different Imperial factions are sitting on various pieces of STCs that would in total make up dozens of complete units. The internal politics and uncertainty of what to do with such technology means they largely stay locked away in vaults, a fiercely guarded secret that falls out of knowledge again and again.

Absolutely badass video! My head is spinning with the possibilities around a hidden or lost human society from the Golden age. My first thought was a short story that detailed a rogue trader commissioned by Gulliman investigating rumors of a tyranid tendril only to find a single lifeless system that stopped the threat by using weapons that assured mutual destruction on a scale that terrifies the imperial ships. That could fit into a white dwarf pretty easily tbh

Would love a story involving Tempestus Scions or a Rouge Trader crew on a retrieval mission for a STC regarding a series of new infantry weapons and armor upgrades while having to battle the Nids in order to retrieve it then the complications of having to sell/trade it for untold advantageous gear/riches. Interesting read I believe it would be.

@@ezragoldberg3132 Men of gold were humanity during the golden age. Since in one of the two accounts of the men of stone and the men of iron only refers to humanity, the other men of gold. So men of gold were humanity at their peak. The men of stone are easy to answer now: they were what we now know as the kin of the leagues of votann. In short, they were genetically engineered cloned workers sent out to colonize the galaxy and prepare things for humanity. They are described as having dim souls, like the kin. They were sent out by humanity to set up colonies, like the kin. In short, the kin are the surviving men of stone who have continued to operate long after they forgot their original purpose Men of iron were then the true AI made after

an intact STC would probably cause another Mechanicum civil war that would probably ruin everything. That said, with 2 Primarchs back and Cawl being Cawl the Imperium could maybe stop being an overall negative and break even. but thats not grimdark, so the worst possible outcome is inevitable.

How have the Van Saar evaded detection? As was mentioned, I'm sure a future video will look into this. But for those interested now, I'd say there are three main reasons. The first is because there aren't even any rumors of the Van Saar having an STC. They spent centuries spreading the belief that their tech came from a vast archeotech vault they uncovered. So there are, in fact, constant expeditions to uncover "Van Saar's vault." The second reason is Lord Helmawr. The one thing that all of the guilds, houses, and clans of Necromunda agree on is the job of the planetary governor is to keep the Imperium out of local affairs. And Lord Helmawr is both VERY good at this and on good terms with Van Saar. Adeptus representation is almost nonexistent below the spire level. So there is little to no notice from off-world entities. The third reason is because the Van Saar keep moving the STC, usually to places like under spaceports or next to power plants that can mask the exotic radiation the STC puts off as regular pollution.

I like the idea of there being a truly pristine garden world somewhere, a human beacon managed by a self-maintaining AI so advanced it has the capability to dissect Necron armaments, and to some degree, understand its inner workings. Able to reverse engineer the design principals that made the Necrons unrivaled in force, and incorporate it in its own designs. A world spanning AI striving for a degree of perfection that would make even Fulgrim himself weep, an automated garden world where Humanity rests at peace, protected by their nigh omniscient, striving to omnipotence, guardian angel. The immovable object no unstoppable force could match nor hope to conquer.

Theory: Either humans searching for an STC like system apart from the machines they were fighting, or the SCT AI itself in search of life for itself (like Scilons on Battlestar) created the Tyranids, which operate like a network of STCs, consuming everything and reconstructing it into the hive.

My theory about STC's is that the fragment of the void dragon on mars potentially corrupted the first STC AI's with scrap code so when humanity took them to all corners of the galaxy it was only a matter of time before their creations (the men of iron) would turn on them. The fact they're called the men of iron kind of smacks of the necron in both description and disposition in a way that's hard to ignore. Plus the fact Big E more or less refuses to talk about the machine rebellion could be explained by the fact he'd have figured out eventually that leaving a fragment of a 64 million year old genocidal machine/god hybrid on the same planet that the STC originated from could have been the source of the issue and decided to keep it to himself. Plus the whole omnissiah thing. At some point all the little pieces add up to make one bigger picture. Hold on there's an inquisitor at my door, i'll be right back.

Your last STC video is quite possibly one of, if not my favorite video on your channel. It’s extremely interesting to think about what humanity was like during the golden age, and the sheer zenith level of power that is now lost forever. Also all your speculations about an undiscovered colony of humans with an STC are very thought provoking. As you said, it’s interesting to speculate about all the possible situations that could play out regarding the imperium finding an intact STC, or the revelation that a colony with an intact STC exists. Personally one idea I’d find interesting is if an imperial ship traveling through the warp gets sent back in time to the golden age. What the crew see would likely be incomprehensible both in terms of the technology humanity wields, and the sheer heresy of AI being common, and the emperor not being worshiped. I throughly enjoy all the speculation you do in all your videos, from dark origins, to lasguns, and I can’t wait to see more! Keep up the great work!

Oh leutin you beautiful bastard. I bought dawn of war 1 on a whim, I thought the space marines on the cover art looked awesome and I love rts games so I figured why not. Loved the game and I remember going to gw's website and looking at all the models and thinking they were awesome. Soon after I was discharged from the army and went through some troubled times. Years later after I got my life together, one day part 1 of the emperor of man popped up in my youtube feed. I watched it and part 2 all in one sitting. I just sat there and watched it like a movie. I found it completely engrossing. I've been obsessed ever since. Thank you for what you do. There's lots of good lore channels but you're the best imo. I recommend your channel to every person that shows any interest in 40k in hopes they'll get the same enjoyment out of it that I do!
