40mm f/1.2 Voigtlander for Nikon Z - FIELD TEST

I purchased this 40mm f1.2 Voightlander and the 15mm f4.5 for a Nikon ZF, this the kind of lens that Nikon should have made for the ZF instead of the plastic 40mm f2 that they packaged th Zf with, the Zf with the Voightlander 4omm is a marriage made in photography heaven, if you bought the ZF with the intention of going back in time when photography was at a more thoughtful, organic pace then this lens was made with the ZF in mind. The two together are a photographic work of art, just beautiful together, Nikon has plenty of primes for the Nikon ZF but if you're looking for something that makes you feel and think about what you are shooting this lens is the best match.

I almost purchased that 15mm but I saw a reference to it being a fisheye lens and i backed off. I did grab that 50mm f1.0 and the few images captured with it are UNREAL. How is that 15mm?

I own the Voigtlander 50 mm f/1.2 Leica M mount and use it adapted on Nikon Z. It has no intense vignette and the image is stellar. If I didn’t own it, I would definitely buy the 40 1.2…

During my last couple years in the F-mount I kept the 28 f/1.4e on a D500 body and together they provided a pretty exquisite 40-ish mm experience.

great lens with a special rendering , I have the 40mm f2 ultron Nikon f mount , overall the focal length it self is cinematic if you look at some prints taken with 40mm . for the ultimate strong 3 D rendering and crystal clear sharpness I have the famous 58mm 1.4 Nokton . My favourite of all my lenses is the old Zeiss 35mm f2 distagon , this lens is nuts and beats all Voigtländer lenses in rendering , the next step would be a Zeiss ZM 35mm 1.4 distagon for the ultimate magic 🪄

Well that was fun! Thanks for the review! I'm curious how this stacks up against the Voigtlander 40mm f/2 SL-II (not that SL-IIS) in terms of rendering and feel. Does it still have the gorgeous lens flares that you get with the SL-II? Using the SL-II on the Z7 instead of the D850 or FM2 feels (and looks) a bit funny in comparison. I'm curious how this f/1.2 lens compares when put side by side. Thank you so much!

I just received this lens direct from the US distributor, Camera Quest, two days ago. I am using it on my APS-C Nikon Z fc. I haven't has a chance to use it much yet, but there seems to be much less vignetting on crop which is not surprising as the darker corners are cut off. This is my third Voigtlander Z mount lens. The other two are the D35mm f/1.2 Nokton and the D23mm f/1.2 Nokton, both designed for APS-C sensors. The 40mm f/1.2 is shaper wide open than either of the APS-C lens and is much sharper across the frame when stopped down. It is also bigger and heaver than either of my APS-C lenses, but still much smaller and lighter than most fast f/1.2 or f/1.4 AF lenses. I find manually focusing Voigtlander lenses, which communicate with Z bodies, to be very fast and easy to use, It is rare that I don't nail focus. I am very pleased so far.

I love character lenses. I currently have the 58G 1.4G. Would this 40mm 1.2 be a good companion to the 58G or is it too similar?

+I have both of these lenses. IMHO, nothing can compete with the 58mm. However, the 58mm requires an ftz adapter and longer min focus distance. The manual focus ring is at the outer end of the lens. I have enjoyed using the more compact 40mm and it does a great job. The lens are different and I shoot with the 40 all of the time, now.

Hello Both, What a fun review. I used to love my Nikon 35mm and 28mm lenses but now I am not sure, I am loveing 14mm-24mm Z lenses and my longer lenses 85mm f1.4 and 500mm pf F mount 100-400 Z Mount. But that all said I think I will just give up for a while.

Get the M-mount version of this lens. Then you have the options of going AF with a Techart AF adaptor.

If you have not picked up this lens for the Nikon ZF that you are looking to get, you won't be sorry, as a manual focusing lens it is very easy to use. It has contacts with the camera that give you the aperture, focal length and focus conformation, the red focus square turns green when focus is acquired and it looks to be spot on.the lens matches the ZF perfectly and completes the retro style of the beautifully. This is the kind of lens that Nikon should have made for the Nikon ZF no questions asked.

Nikon does really need a retro styled 35mm Zfc, call it Zfx, because the C into the Zfc stands for APS-C for my thoughts. The Df is no option, it's on top and front retro, but the back does look like any other Nikon DSLR from that date. Those new Voigtländers with all that classic lens design, really scream for a say Nikon FM(2)/FE(2) styled DSLM.

Not exactly, the Zf is fine, but it's missing at least 5 matching prime lenses, say 20 to 135mm, F1.4 to F1.8 or F2 would being nice...and AI-S lens design, and *with* aperture ring, just like these classic prime lenses...to use onto the Zf. There's hope, a small company called Artalab created a 35/1.4 AI and AI-S lenses, better than their Nikkor originals, and relative cheap, too. With aperture rings, of course. And the same for the APS-C/DX Zfc, there's now a pancake-esque 24/F1.7 DX lens, all manual focus also.@@hollowaysteve

Fujifilm X-Mount does have the *biggest* and *best *APS-C/DX Lens Lineup into the business - about ~54 lenses. And many are made out of metal, with aperture rings also. Not plasticky, like Canikon & Sony APS-C/DX, and not being treated like the lost stepfoster child, like those brands, whereas APS-C is only a stepstone, to buy into their FF gear.@@hollowaysteve

Tough choice, and depends on if you really want that low light f/1.2 aperture or if you prefer a more conventional 35mm f/2. Some people just prefer the 40mm focal length for whatever reason!

Like all Voigtlander lenses, the 40mm f/1.2 Nokton is manual focus lens only. However, unlike most manual focus lenses, there are electrical contacts so the aperture and shooting metadata is shared with the camera.

I'll need to order reverse aging drugs with the lens in order to manually focus at f/1.2, especially at high fps. Thus, I'm keeping my Z 50 f/1.2 S. 🙂

I would never use any fast manual focus lens wide open in burst mode. This is not really the best choice for sports and birding.
