My older WW2 Veteran neighbor had 1 gun. A single shot 410. He always got his limit of squirrels, rabbit, deer and even a black bear. He just used the right round for the right season and had excellent shot placement.

My favorite hunting shotgun is my single shot .410. Squirrels, dove, rabbits, and even the unlucky duck I sneak up on. Doesn't tear up the meat, low recoil, less noise, lighter, and no moving parts to fail. Too bad the ammo is hard to find. I had to start reloading my own with black powder and 209 primers with BBs.

It's worth remembering that the .410 was at one time a much prized gangland weapon here in the UK. These people had access to the most powerful weapons of the day, but the .410 was a preferred option for many of them. The .410 was an extremely efficient close-range killer, and plenty of bad guys found out the hard way that it is definitely not a kid's gun.

Never underestimate a .410 shotgun. I was given a .410 bolt action shotgun on my 12th birthday in the early 1950s and learned then how effective it is. Your demonstration speaks volumes. There was a lot of hydrostatic shock impacting those blocks.

The birdshot demo confirms what I have always said. That is, birdshot for home defense where over penetration could be a concern, is highly recommended and as you all can see, absolutely effective. I have known some old shooters that kept a 410 above their bed for home defense. They had a handgun in the nightstand but always told me it was the 410 they would use. They said it would take any man down and would not go through as many walls. It had less collateral damage and less chance of hitting a loved one by mistake or travel through. I had a lever-action 410 when I was young and loved it. I killed my first turkey with it way back in the early 80s when they started the first turkey hunt in N Missouri. I just bought my grandson a Rossi Matched Pair Youth .22 LR/.410 Bore Single Shot Rifle/Shotgun Combo. It is a blast to shoot and he loves it.

I am well pleased with this gun it has 28 inch barrels and multiple choke tubes. I bought slugs buckshot as well as birdshot. For home defense I tend to like 3 inch number 4 shot for the pattern and penetration plus it works great on crows too. Great video have a great day and a better tomorrow

@@tac7.625 I was actually looking for either a side by side 410 or a rifle shotgun combo but have not seen any at reasonable prices in several years. I found this one an over under 410 at a pawnshop that I have did business with in the past. What drew me to it was it was a plain gun the longer barrels 28 inch and screwin choke tubes I have never even seen a 410 with 28 inch barrels. Overall i am impressed with the balance of the gun my thoughts are the longer barrels help. As my health declines I am tending to drive to the edge of the field and set up with a cooler and chair with my sons dogs and wait the squirrels out. Overall I am well pleased with the light weight and negligible recoil ever with buckshot and slugs. We have coyotes and wild hogs also this is my reason for my .45 lol . .410 was the first firearm I got to use as a kid. I actually took a squirrel at 100 yards with a single #6 pellet hit, although I learned that even with a full choke, you shouldn't use it that far. I also have packable 20" barreled.410 which has 2 barrels, one is a smoothbore cylinder (unchoked) that I installed a set of metal Remington sights on and the other is a 20" full choke. With these two, I can hunt anything around here in a pinch. I also have a Mossberg 500 .410 that I use for rabbit hunting and home defense. I load it with 3 federal 5 pellet 000 buck and keep it where me or the wife can grab it if needed. I also make my own .410 slugs using .444 marlin brass and unique powder. I use (2) double layer cardboard wads and .41 magnum bullets flipped backwards so the big flat is forward. Out to 50 yards I shoot about 2" groups and it'll rip through multiple white oak pallet boards and shatters them good. People wouldn't think twice about using a .41 magnum pistol for defense or hunting, but then balk at a .410. I'm getting more velocity from the .410 and it hits hard. I also use 9.3x74R brass to make 3" shotshells that are reloadable easily. I load these with (5) .38 caliber round balls or #6 shot and they are a bit more powerful than the factory ones. I also reload some of the plastic hulls and have used pyrodex blackpowder in equal volume to shot to make some fun smokey loads, but I only shoot these in the single shot, (easier to clean). These are really simple to load with just a Lee .223 decapper I had laying around and a chunk of 3/8" dowel rod. That's all you need to load it. I use a piece of Richlite cutting board with a hole in it to decap into, but just a simple little hammer. I make overshot wads out of milk jug and hand punch all the wads with a 7/16" hole punch I got from sears in a set; the 5/8" works for 20 gauge, 9/16" for 16 ga and 3/4" for 12 gauge also. I found that the larger Lee dippers work good for developing loads easily for this caliber. .410 puts a lot less pellets in game, kicks a lot less and my Mossberg is about the same weight as an over-under 20 gauge my buddy uses for rabbit hunting.

@MrTacklebury

@@Petryfied I don't use a press personally. If you are only doing a few loads here and there, you really don't need one. If you are doing a lot, I'd get a MEC 600 Jr. Check around on boards. I've seen them used for as little as $100, but it's rare. I have fun doing the ones I need with hand tools though. ;) If you want fancy wads that is where the biggest expense lies in reloading them.

.410's are my favorite shotguns. I think .410 long guns are the best survival firearm, because they're small and light, but you can take game as large as deer, or as small as dove without ruining the meat. .45/.410 handguns are great for self-defense, because they allow you to chamber extremely effective .45 Colt rounds, that only fit in that type of long chamber design.

@@MrAvidOutdoorsman 000 Buck is .36 caliber, exactly the same as an old Colt 1851. The velocity of the buckshot out of the gun is very similar to that of the 1851 Navy Revolver. Grew up hunting with a single shot (no mag), bolt action .410. used to be able to take squirrels and birds at 30 yards with that bad girl. She's still my second favorite firearm, and I've happily passed her on to my wife. Though I admit I'm a little jealous, love my 12 gauge, but just doesn't have the accuracy of that little .410... Don't know if it's a mental thing on my end, or just the gun itself, but with that .410 I could thread a needle with some bird shot at 20 yards... I'm betting it's mental honestly. When you know that your lunch depends on your shot, and you've only got one shot to hit, you make sure you're on target every time. Plus, light little gun with no recoil helps.

@ChuckChuckBoBuck 11 ай бұрын
@@longhunterman2399I have an old Stevens 39A bolt action tube fed .410 I acquired as a teen, that is an absolute tack driver and has brought down it's fair share of small game, and clay pigeons. My all time favorite day out shooting my .410 will always be one to remember. Back in the early 2000's I was with a group of friends shooting clay pigeons, mostly using 12 and 20 gauge, I was the only one that also brought a .410. After several rounds we changed things up a bit and added in a 5th position as a cleanup shooter in the middle shooting lane, their entire job was to see if they could hit a clay that the other 4 had missed, which meant all their shots would be deep down range. I volunteered to be the cleanup shooter, figuring I wouldn't get that many shots it wouldn't cost me that much to shoot the .410, so I and a couple boxes of 3" birdshot (2-1/2 doesn't have near the reach) and headed to the firing line. Over the next hour or so, I had an absolute blast with the little shotgun and made several guys believers in the .410, by hitting every clay I had a shot at, they couldn't believe I was making the deep down range shots I was taking with old "kids shotgun." Which then, devolved into us seeing who could hit a moving clay at the furthest distance with the old .410, and just having an all around good time. Sure it didn't have the ability to absolutely powder the clays at the ranges I was shooting, but it was still breaking them up into lots of pieces, which is still enough oomph to be lethal to upland gamebirds and other assorted small game at those distances.

I love my Henry lever action .410. I mounted an RMR on it. Zeroed it at 100 yds with slugs, but have not shot clay to see how it does out that far.

The reason that birdshot was so impressive is the speed and the weight of the shot. Those shells usually carry about 1/2 to 5/8 oz of shot. at 1,000fps, that's about the same energy as a .44 magnum .

410 did more damage than I would have thought. I know that the 410 is my favorite squirrel gun. It will knock a big busytail out of a tall oak tree with #6 or 7 1/2 shot and be DRT.

@Faceless King Walmart back in 2020...they had Winchester Deer slugs. It pretty much looks like a 9mm rifled bullet. They were under $3 a box of 5. I bought a few but declined when the guy asked if I wanted more since this was about maybe 4-6 months when they would enforce limits. Barely a week later, these were gone and likely being flipped on GunBroker. Now where did I put the self-ass kicking machine.....

Results aren't too surprising to me. I've been on the .410 train for around 10 years or so now. The Taurus Judge is really what turned me on towards it, especially once handgun specific loads were developed. I've taken deer, hogs, and other small game with the .410 to great effect and have zero doubts about it's capability defensively speaking. Yes. it's no 12 or 20 gauge in terms of overall power but it's more than enough for most medium to small game and personal protection. I'm a big fan of those Winchester 3 inch 1/4 oz slugs. They are my personal favorite for deer and hog hunts and have them loaded up in one of my .410 pumps for home defense. I see more and more people getting turned on to the .410 as a viable option these days. It just sucks .410 availability is at an all time low. I had the good sense to stock up on a lot before times were bad but it makes it much harder to want to shoot for fun knowing how little is out there to replenish what is lost. For the record... It's always a really fun video. Stay safe out there.

Someone told me when I bought my Bond Arms derringer the .410 would only piss off an intruder no real damage. Well after seeing this I'm sure glad I got it. 1st shot 😮caught me by surprise because I was believing folks. After it woke up my hand ✋🏽 I went to 2 hand shooting 😅😂😂. It is a great truck round to rid yourself of theives.

My first shotgun was a double barrel 410 and that thing was so much fun, my dad's friend brought his to the range a few years back and it was a blast (I'll see myself out) to bust some clays with it! It had a modified choke and a full choke built into the barrels, it was tricky to shoot but very fun! My dad has talked about your channel several times, and the first time I look for a 410 slug penetration test, your video popped up. Thank you for this!

I used to have a FMJ 45/410 Dbl barrel that was great and even shot a tighter pattern than a full size single shot 410. But I think the short barrels didn't get the same energy on the shot as a longer one can. I do have a bolt action one that after replacing the fireing pin hasn't let me ever miss a clay. Just sucks that the ammo is so hard to get now.

The .410 is not really a weaker load than a 12 gauge, the projectiles are going about as fast, there's just less of them or less weight if it's a slug but they are still travelling and hitting just as hard. Those semi-auto .410 shotguns are low recoil and still extremely lethal for example. Thinking of something like those AK pattern .410s. Plus if it's box fed you can fit more of them in a magazine than a 12 gauge. I think WTW should buy an AK pattern gun in .410! I reckon they are awesome. Even makes for a very viable home defence piece that anyone can use well.

My Grandpa used to make custom firearms and then my dad took over the business, he’s got all his licensing so he can build and sell fully automatic weapons. Anyways I always wanted an AR style. .410 shotgun and he knocked it out of the park. I have a 20rd magazine, semi-auto .410 shotgun that looks like it’s an ar rifle. Because it’s something my dad made from the ground up, it’s probably my favorite possession I have. It’s so smooth mechanically, it’s accurate, we have mine silenced (it’s really not that quiet but it looks awesome) i practice all the time with my EDC, take classes to learn more things, just to make sure I’m staying prepared but I’ve fired more rounds from that custom .410 than my M9 that I’ve had since I was in the marines. The m9 is my edc, ride or die gun and it has maybe 20k rounds. I don’t think I could put a number on the rounds I’ve fed though the .410

Great video, thanks.
