How far is a Shotgun Deadly? These are the not smart ideas we come up with related to shotguns. I've found myself focused on how deadly shotguns are because it is such a compelling weapon. Especially when we think about how far a projectile might need to travel, and given the low pressures and velocities from shotguns I really wanted to see when it would be deadly. Utilizing BirdShot, buckshot, and Slugs we'll be evaluating with intense science.

Then getting into duck loads of 2,3&4 shot or seriously hard hitting goose loads like BB, BB2, T. In 3 or 3 1/2 inch mag loads would give people a different outlook on what "birdshot" can do.

Birdshot is debatable. It depends on the shot used. For basic home defense, Ive found that #5 shot is more than enough to stop someone at 20 ft. I have a small home with neighbors so wanted something that would drop someone, but not go thru the walls afterwards. Though i do own plenty of 00buck.

This test is very interesting and not to sound picky. There are multiple sizes of buck and multiple sizes of birdshot that could have created more gradually effective ranges. There is an "art" to shotgun shooting and selecting the proper shot size for a given task

Dr. Garand Thumb, I am a military historian and watching this video has reminded me of an ammunition load from the American Civil War. Because both sides were low on rifled muskets at the start, many of them were using .69 (nice) caliber smoothbore muskets. One of the popular cartridges for this weapon was called the "buck and ball" load. This would be the .69 caliber ball with three buckshot loaded on top. The accounts we have describe these loads as being particularly devastating within 80 yards. I was wondering if you would do a "historical" science episode on this load.

Winchester had a few of these loads for home defense for their PDX1 line. One rifled slug with 3 00 pellets behind it. The performance was disappointing. Might as well used either a rifled slug alone to prevent stray bbs, 00 buck if you need the spread, or just a straight up rifle instead.

The point is that even with the inadequate weapons, there were some devastating innovations they made and it would be interesting to see those innovations tested with modern science.

At 25:15… you found out what I found out. I was about 30 years old at the time. In an altercation I was shot in the leg at about 5 yards with a 20 gauge. Steel shot, I consider myself lucky at that as I am in my mid 50s now, and still have shot in my leg, lead poisoning. I took it in my right leg outer thigh, and it wiped out a good 5” swath of skin, muscle, nerves, whatever was there ended up on the wall behind me. I got really lucky and wasn’t hit again. But yeah, bird shot, 5 yards, the pattern is tight enough to carry the energy. Bad news. I keep my shotty loaded with #1 buck. You get the same energy, twice the pellets.

Typically lead bullets won’t give you lead poisoning. That comes from ingesting lead. I work in an ER and docs don’t remove bullets unless absolutely necessary.

I’m a retired cop. In 1994 I was shot with #9 birdshot from a sawed off shotgun from 17 yards. I was in the old Weaver flashlight stance, firing, and was struck in both hands, both arms and unfortunately in the face from below the nose up. Felt like a wide baseball bat hit me in the face. Both hands immediately went numb and unusable. I had some arterial bleeding from my left wrists which I covered covered with my limp ass right hand. A few seconds later blood began pouring out of my nose and down my throat. So what happened was, some of the pellets hit my forehead and flattened out on the surface of the skull. Several pellets penetrated my skull above my eyes and lodged behind my sinuses, this was the reason the blood faucet turned on. One pellet went very deep and caused a basilar skull fracture. Because I was in the weaver stance most of the damage below my head was to my left arm. I ended up with a compartment syndrome and have two massive scars. I was pretty messed up luckily there was lots of cops around because the shooter had already shot an officer, which is why my sorry ass was there and I happened to find the guy. The recovery was horrible, very painful, and I was out for two years. The compartment syndrome caused motor nerve damage to my arm and it was slow going. The sensory nerves were wide awake!!!! I have about 85% use but still have pain. Yeah I went back and did 37 years. On a positive note the pattern of the pellets on my face was amazingly lucky on my part. They hit above my eyes, down my nose, and under my right eye. One hitting between my eye and the bridge of my nose. God loves kids,fools and cops So at 17 yards, birdshot no joke. I’m sure the ammo was pretty cheap as well. My partner and I shot the guy 9 times before he fired and he died(the old 9mm rounds. A whole different story)

Back in the 00’s, a pheasant hunting preserve was trying to open up in Wasco Co, Oregon. I would love to see a comparison of different slug options and guns Start with a rifled slug and go to a midwestern deer slug gun with riffled barrel and sabot slugs. A lot of the guys I used to hunt with back there have gone to bolt action 20 gauges chambered for shells 3 to 3.5” with rifled barrels and they are grouping decent at 200 yards. It would just be interesting to see how far out the slugs in different weapons and different styles stay accurate and deadly.

I’ve done a few autopsies on shotgun suicides. Even with the barrel of the gun in the mouth, a lot of the birdshot will bounce around the inside of the skull. Skull densities can vary, though. I’ve seen a 9mm, shot in through the mouth, NOT fully penetrate the skull (it was cracked pretty good, though).

Just know, that this happens to the person who wasn’t drinking. They can also be children. I’ve pulled windshield wipers out of peoples backs. Wire connectors somehow make their way into bodies. I’ve seen victims of explosions, getting hit by trains, fires…but the worst are usually vehicle accidents. Then there’s multiple stages of decomposition…….and maggots.

The biggest issue I have is whether it's a home defender or a full barrel shotgun, is it a full choke or 1 with variable choke tubes and then if it is a 12 Ga. what size chamber/shell is being used? 2 3/4, 3" or even 3.5"... I find these all to be a bit miss leading when the shotgun is not identified, or shell size used plus wether it's a semi-auto or a pump ( we all should know that a semi has less force than a pump due to gasses being used to cycle the action) .... just my 2 cents

A few years ago... before hand held rangefinders... we were pushing deer and had a slug go 400 yards... and break a rock that was between 2 blockers..... Range was established later that day.... by using the county's GIS to plot all locations of parties... and the rock... involved. The slug had gone 250 yards and dropped about 8 feet... over and into the upward slope of a swale... and then hit the sod... changing trajectory upwards.... left a 30 yard streak in the sod... as it climbed up another 6 feet... and a further 150 yards... before it hit the rock.. in a one foot high ridge line of rocks... at that edge of the sod farm... The rest of the story was that the shooter was an airline pilot... and the two blockers were... one... the head of homicide... and two.... me... Thankfully... the third blocker... the rock... was already dead... therefore there were no charges pressed... The pilot .. on the next day... at his same location... quit shooting his "flying" slugs... and was now shooting buck shot... and did get a deer... The day after that... the number one blocker... got a georgeous trophy buck... at the location that we.. and the rock.... were blocking at.

I think Iraq Vet 8888 tested that. Basically if you can hit it with a slug, it will die. But the drop plus the loss of stabilization due to low amount of spin will make it nearly impossible to consistently hit targets past 150. Slugs are pretty bad about fluttering off course by several feet due to a light breeze at 150 yards or more.

Couple of questions please. In the 1990's Georgia Public Safety Training Center and the Georgia State Patrol were teaching/using a modified choke in a 12 gauge, 12 inch (?) barrel. It was a long time ago, my memory isn't so good anymore, but that's what I remember. It worked back then but is it still acceptable to shoot both slug and OO Buck through a modified choke? Also; as I understand it, one of the recommendations for home defense is to use # 4 shot. How lethal is this ammo and from what ranges? Your/anyone's advise is greatly appreciated. George

I have heard of riot police using rock salt, unfortunately all tests to date that I'm aware of have used small grain rock salt which simply disintegrates prior to leaving the barrel. But clearly bird shot would be a far less lethal option assuming you were beyond 20 yards.

For anyone interested: Drag Force (Fd) = (1/2)*Cd*rho*A*v^2. Forgetting about the other variables, drag force scales with the length dimension associated squared (the frontal area) of the projectile, in this case radius: Fd = (something)*r^2 Mass is rho*V, in this case: m = (something)*r^3 So drag force increases with the square of the size of the projectile and mass increases with the cube of the size dimension. By F=ma, the acceleration (or deceleration due to drag) is inversely proportional to the size of the projectile. That is why small little bird shot hits like nothing at 100 yards yet buckshot has the power to do damage: birdshot has much more kinetic energy lost to drag. This is also why sectional density is so important regarding long range projectiles-- SD = mass/frontal area, this is just the inverse of the deceleration of the bullet times some other stuff. Higher sectional density directly lowers deceleration due to drag.

Higher density allows for a greater sectional density without requiring longer projectiles (longer = more skin friction drag). As far as shape goes, we often talk about the ballistic coefficient, with higher values being better generally. In fluid dynamics, we have the drag coefficient. The ballistic coefficient is inversely proportional to the drag coefficient, for the latter, smaller values mean lower drag force by my Fd equation above. Drag coefficient and Ballistic coefficient both change with velocity (especially with the transition from subsonic=>transonic and from transonic=>supersonic. With most projectiles, a nice slipstream shape yields the lowest drag. With really high velocity projectiles, having nice curvy slippery shapes doesn’t help so much since most drag at those speeds comes from compression of the air in front of the projectile. This is why anti-tank tank rounds are very long, slender dart shapes (the super long length also has to do with the physics of armor penetration which is a whole different subject).

Now when it comes to slugs it is best to buy a box of bombat agressive slugs with a tucston core and wrapped wit a seven leaf brass outter and then a light coated dipped is silver for when needed, that is if you want to hit the target and do as much damage as possible to it. But just target anything cheap will do. As far range testing you can get set of numbers to act like you are doing something but putting a round through flesh tells it all.
