410. Narrowboat Journey - Locking Up - Part Five

Having finished my cruising yesterday and moored just down from Buckby bottom lock, today I make my way there in the hope of again sharing the locks with another boat. I'm very fortunate to meet Julie and Martin from Rhapsody in Blue, who assist me through that first lock. How do I get on and where do I moor at the end of the day?

Afternoon Alan, that was a really good account of the Buckby flight. They are unbelievably tough locks, and that flight has been the reason that many a narrowboat owner, mooring at Heyford Fields, has decided to give up boating, as they became older, purely because the Buckby flight was becoming unmanageable. I really am appalled that there has been critical comment about wanting to share the locks. Let the dissenting voices try it for themselves, and they will soon feel differently (not to mention CRT advice about sharing locks whenever possible to save water). Well done you for doing the right thing and looking after yourself. Cheers 🍷🍷

That was a forunate twin collaboration for six locks. Though lock 7 was a bit of a hassle, you came through safely. All in all, you were definitely in good company, even at this lock!❤

Hi Alan, hope you’ve had a nice weekend. I’m pleased you had plenty of help with the locks and a boat for company. I struggled in double locks on a boat hire I had on the Grand Union. I couldn’t stop it moving across the lock when filling it up. On one occasion it hit the lock wall rather hard which isn’t good for the boat or the lock wall. I tried to remember what you had said about opening one paddle and it would pin you against the side. Sadly it didn’t work for me, we done something wrong I’m assuming. Lovely vlog, glad you didn’t have any mishaps in lock 7 with the narrow wrungs

@@MyNarrowboatVenture I had control of forward and backward motion it was the force of water from the ground paddles that tossed me about. We just opened them more slowly after that 👍

The Kevin is Kevin from Bickerstaff Boats I thought you had written Kevin instead of Shaun . More information on the boat build at Foxes Afloat in coming weeks they have not even said where they will take the boat . I wonder if it will even be a livaboard narrow boat? It might be a motor cruiser or vessel able to be taken over the Irish Sea.
