How can I test this component? Can I use a multimeter? when bad is it only destroyed? or will it short?

in good condition, it should open on multimeter, if it becomes short circuit, damage is clearly visible on its outer body and on multimeter it will short circuit

Merci Mr hasseeb pour cet excellent travail.ma question est:pourquoi le varistor d'une carte électronique de frigo n'a pas fonctionné lors d'une surtension?tous les composants après ce varistor ont grillés.sa valeur est pourtant 670volts(D671).merci

le bienvenu mon cher. tout d'abord désolé d'apprendre la perte. car ces dispositifs de protection doivent arrêter la surtension, mais dans certains cas, ils ne parviennent pas à attraper les petites pointes ou parfois la surtension est inférieure à son niveau d'énergie nominal. ou parfois, il n'y a pas de surtension, et le circuit de commutation sur la carte démarre en "facteur de sonnerie du filtre EMI" ce qui endommage les pièces associées il existe de nombreuses possibilités de catastrophe dans la technologie électronique moderne

Thanks Haseeb. I did not realize that you can have an MOV between live and earth and neutral and earth. Is it always better to have MOV's on all 3 wires?

yes dear. in low quality 2 wire power supplies for commercial use, they use just one MOV (that is not a safety but they manufacturers compromise on some hidden safeties) for 3 wire system, line to earth and neutral to earth, there is low voltage protection MOVs, that have very low clamping voltage rating as 11 volt only
