Say hello to Derek Whitacre's flame-spitting 1982 Porsche 911 SC that has been turbocharged and modified over the past 12 years to reach the point at where it sits now. It's truly a beast of a sports car, and a handful out here in the canyons. With a 3.4L flat-6 over the rear axle, it feels like nothing else i've ever driven before, and the whole drive had me thinking about it as a giant metaphor for my time here in Los Angeles. We hope you guys enjoy this special episode of the show, and if you'd like to checkout Derek's shenanigan's down in Mexico with the Targa Baja, his documentary is out now on Adam Carolla's Chassy network. chassy.com/pro...

Ok! So this is about halfway in-between those behind-the-scenes vlog style videos we put out a couple of weeks ago, and a fully-produced 45+ minute feature film that we hope to shoot sometime this summer. We don't have a Patreon, we're not asking for donations, but if you have a moment to give this video a thumbs up and share it on your social media, it would mean the world to us :D Hope you enjoyed it! - Marcus

Derek Whitacre awesome car. Just curious, how come the gauges are sideways?
@themoscowcoupattempt
@themoscowcoupattempt 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. A couple reasons for the sideways gauges. The tach is that way so that the shift point is always pointing straight up (because race car). The others are tilted so I can actually see them. The steering wheel is smaller than stock, so I adjusted the gauges in a way that I can read them without bobbing my head around.

Beautiful air cooled Porsche and well built. I have been following you on Instagram for a long time. But what happens after 6500 RPMs?
@themoscowcoupattempt
@themoscowcoupattempt 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much. 6500 is where the limiter is set. It was my way of telling Marcus "Don't go there." Peak HP/TQ is around 6000 anyway, so not really useful going past that.

That analogy between the car and LA was spot on, just as you complained about the R8 being too clinical (even though objectively fantastic) is the same idea with the city. The clash between wealth and poor, beauty and grittiness, beach and city, etc. makes for an experience, something that is hard to put into words but stimulates one in a way that an imperfect car does too.

I absolutely hate when the spin the gauges...? That absolutely does nothing for you! I don't need gauges at all when im driven a car! I can shift by ear & when i can feel it just at the top of the pulling curve!. Just one you're supposed to grab the next gear!!! Currently i have a 550-600H.P. BMW 135i which i need my tablet in it so i can look at everything after driving it to look at timing & if any little imperfections are happening. But even my car i can drive without cages. Turn the gauges up! The only reason cup drivers do it because they're strapped in with a helmet!. They cant look down like we can so the need the needles at the top & again that's the cars only purpose. But this is a street car even if you track it. I just hate the look it's such a cliche of trying to look like a race car...?

Were you there back in the day? I'm friends with Banning now, and a few of the old Mul runners from the 70's/early 80's. Banning still has the silver RSR. - Owner in Video
@NSCA12
@NSCA12 6 жыл бұрын
Derek Whitacre I started watching in 82. I rode a Yamaha YZ125, as I was only 14, and would sit on it and watch the races. I started building an MGB with a 289 and a Top Loader when I was 15 and got it done right after I turned 16. It wasn't fast in the hills as it handled for shit, but I had allot of fun with it. I remember trying to keep up with the white Scarab V8 Z-car only to have him put bus lengths on me. I'm not sure he even knew I was back there. Almost everyone there was older than me, but very cool. Chris was always kind of aloof, but damn I loved watching him run. It's awesome to know he still has it. Does he still drive it through the hills any? If I remember correctly he lived right off Mulholland or am I remembering wrong? What did you drive? I've always wondered what happen to some of those folks. The cars that stick out in my mind are - Chris's RSR another 911 with large rear flares A Capri Mini Cooper 67-69 Camaro Mid 70's 4-speed T/A A V-Dub with a Tee-Pee exhaust and only one seat. The Z-car mentioned above. There was a station wagon that stands out in my memory too, but I can't remember why.
@themoscowcoupattempt
@themoscowcoupattempt 6 жыл бұрын
That's great! Yeah, Chris is still off Mulholland, but I won't say where. He's got the RSR running, but he doesn't really take it out. If you ever see a silver Ferrari 360 up there, that's him. The other 911 you saw was probably John Hall. I know of a couple first gen Camaro's that were totally raced-out... one of which was also Banning's. He had a red one with big flares and spec'ed for SCCA racing. The station wagon may have been Dave B, but I'd have to ask him. I met a lot of the old Mul racers starting around 12 years ago. In fact, a guy I worked with at that time was up there the same time you were. I didn't live in LA, and was WAY too young to be up there, as I'm in my early 40's. You want a flash back in history check this link out. A thread I started years ago regarding Banning's book on Mulholland. forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/323773-what-happened-mulholland-king-hill-rsr.html

Derek Whitacre Oh wow!!! Thank you for sharing that. I will be reading for awhile, it had me hooked in the first couple of pages. I'm living in Alabama now, moved here due to work. I want to say the Camaro was a Hunter Green. Please do let me know who had the wagon if you are able to find out. I love your car, it's great to see people keeping the hills alive with sounds of an air cooled 911. I currently drive a Cayman S and am looking for a decent 911. I would love to see that chopped, swooped silver bullet in the hills again. Please tell him "Hello" for me the next time you see him, if you think about it. Thank you again for sharing and please don't ever sell that car.
@themoscowcoupattempt
@themoscowcoupattempt 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Oh, and a lot of the cars you talk about are either mentioned or there are photographs of in the thread. At some point, Banning shows up in the thread and starts posting old pics. Somebody talks about their mom's wagon that they fitted with sticky tires and beefed up suspension. It's ALL in there.
