To some people, mainly Porsche people, this is the most desirable car you could own. Singer comprises a bunch of zany, brilliant Porsche-files who have invested their lives in re-imagining the classic Porsche 911. We tour the factory, speak to the team and drive it on road and track.

I remember speaking with a psychologist at a social event once...we got on famously. I asked him about desire - what it is, where it comes from, can it be controlled - and he said something that sat me upright. One of those examples of a simple idea which makes perfect sense but is very very difficult to actually implement in the real world. Does it get you down when you look at cars like this and then compare to what you actually drive? Solution. Don't look. So I try not to look, I try to appreciate what I have, not envy what I don't and mostly it works. Then I see something like this and the whole charade comes crashing down. I love to look...like, really love to look. Things of beauty like this need to be seen.

I've watched the video at least 20 times since it intially dropped. This is hands-down THE BEST video showcasing what Singer is about. I just enjoy the back-and-forth between Chris and Rob. Also the assembly breakdown discussion later in the video is just INCREDIBLE! Such a great video, about a great car, and great company and owner.

I love cars. I am obsessed with them. Old and new. I was born in Southern California and, in high school, I loved pulling my Volkswagen Beetle into the driveway to wash it on a warm breezy day. Fast forward 15 years. I moved to NYC to be an artist. I am car-less and it's killing me. I feel stuck. Trapped on this island with no way out. Rental cars are not the answer. They are lifeless. My only respite is to spend countless hours researching and dreaming about cars through this inflexible glowing screen. From the Toyota Prius to the Rolls Royce Phantom, all cars are noble expressions of human engineering, ingenuity, and creativity. For me, however, there is one car that sits at the apex of all others. If I can own just one automobile in the world it would be a Porsche by Singer. The 911 Targa is another one of Singer's masterpieces. I do not say this flippantly. Yes, the 911 Targa is a masterpiece at the level of Michelangelo's Pieta. It is rolling sculpture. Every curve, every detail is excruciatingly crafted. It's so beautiful that, upon a glance, Medusa herself would turn to stone. My hairs stand up on the back of my neck. My arms and legs go numb. My whole body trembles. I weep. In the end, I don't know how I will ever be able to afford a Porsche by Singer. Now my dream becomes my nightmare...

coltsuperocean10 I think the current format of Top Gear has perhaps run its course. I think there is a finite limit to the number of silly antics you can do involving vehicles. When I mention my "Power Ball Retirement Project," I get THAT look and a 'yeah, whatever" from my wife. I suspect you and I have about the same chance at acquiring a shiny new Singer any time soon. As far as Chris and his talent behind the wheel, a quick review of the list of my "Chris Harris" videos shows an incredible collection of people who have the confidence to place their "Works of Art" in his hands and walk away to allow him to exercise them and show what they're capable of. The one video of him with both the Ferrari F40 & a matching F50 shows an owner's amazing degree of trust! He "plays" them both like the master he is.

When you're smiling the whole time you drive a car that is pure fun, you realize this is how driving should be. Forget the technical reasons, or styling changes, or anything else, your having a great time that makes the rest of all the little things we are irritated with disappear. Doesn't matter the brand or make, it's just fun to do. I got my dream car, 6 speed, B5 blue, 016 HellCat. My friends still laugh when I pull up to visit and hop out grinning ear to ear. I'd love to drive one of these Singer versions. Chris never stopped smiling, that's the clue for something special about the way Singer puts soul into their work. Plus it's fun to actually drive one.

I dont know bout Ramen. I used to work in bespoke custom design residential homes, $1-6 million costs. Turn around time was about 1.5 to 2 years. Yes.. that is what it takes for painstaking hands on crafstmanship where nothing is manufactured in volume & just about all of it is spec designed or ordered or created on site... Concerning food, no we were expected to be @ the top of our game, so eating crap doesn't work. Mistakes are exceptionally costly & too many you are out. In the video you can see these guys take care of themselves, you have to when you often average 10-15 hour days 6-7 days a week. Especially when the timeline is shorter than normal.

John Betbabanta that's what I always thought, until I realized that trying to win the game how it was played years ago is the failure of most ambitious people. You are holding the key to material excess in your hand. A smartphone, wifi and reading comprehension trumps a Wharton education prior to the internet. Compound interest destroyed a sickness that plagued my family for generations, poverty is a disease. 10k bankroll and good timing along with due diligence becomes over one million dollars in around 12 years. That is with a very reasonable expectation for return on investment. The crooks in Brooks Brothers suits on Wall Street want you to believe it is so difficult and it is not really just a ponzi scheme based on a fiat currency by definition to keep the status quo. Nobody is going to tell you what the secret is. I am definitely telling you that there is one. I wish you much success and progress in your quest for a Singer, JP Morgan himself said that there is nothing more full of potential than the dark horse in finance. The products of nepotism he is competing with are not prepared or capable of dealing with him

The Singer 911 is so freakin' awesome. The Singer 911 is to Porsche as the Shelby Cobra is to A/C. I have got to drive one soon. Harris might pick one up, but he still probably laments getting rid of his 911 GT3 4.0 which is a future classic. Even Mark Webber told him it was a bad move at a car show. But maybe before he picks up a Singer 911, he should try to buy back the car he sold or find another 911 GT3 4.0, then pick up a Singer 911. Who knows? Just my ever humble opinion.

I LOVE the idea of these no nonsense, raw, visceral cars with modern underpinnings. A classic 911 with Ohlins suspension and modern brakes? Mother of Christ... And look at the time, effort, and dedication. All those hours spent just trying to develop the perfect wheel and tire combination. He could have gone with the easy route and just slapped on a set of wheels that looked pretty good after the rest of the car was sorted, but no, had to be perfect. In a world driven by motivations of making something as cheap as possible and and quickly as possible to appeal to the widest variety of people as possible, I just wish I could afford to purchase items like this made by people who actually are in it for more than just the money.

Singer 911s are works of art, they belong on a public platform for the world to witness there beauty, I'd happily drive one round for them, if they need someone to fulfil this public service. The perfect car in my world, nothing comes close to them in the form of a usable supercar that is so understated that it would fit in with all classes of people, forget the hyper supercars, your Veyrons, Ferraris, Zondas and Koenigseggs. They bring to much theatre to the proceedings of the word 'car'. It should bring about a simplistic child-like quality and when I was young, it was the simple shape of those early 911s that made it for me, sometimes 'less is more' and the Singer is perfect in everyway!

Half a million dollars or not, this is fabulous. What a shame the factory have abandoned the Clubsport monniker and don't produce a few stripped out and more basic versions of their current offerings - shorn of adaptive suspension, switchable exhausts and all of the rest of the 'essential' crap. They mightn't shift thousands of them, but they'd buy a lot of credibility and goodwill amongst their most vocal fans. I don't even mean stuff like the Cayman R or the Boxster Spyder (though they were close). A 991 CS based on a C2 with a simplified interior, two or three colour options only, manual only, one choice of alloy, non-adaptive suspension and a few spec deletions for 10% less than the price of a regular 991 C2. A pipe dream, but it'd be lovely.

Buying a 1970s Porsche and restoring it would give a car that would be just as special as a Singer. My goal is to buy a classic Porsche and have it restored to factory specification so as to drive a 70s Porsche as if it was brand new.
@johntechwriter
@johntechwriter 6 жыл бұрын
My sense is the factory is not thrilled with Singer. I understand why they wouldn’t be. While their work is well executed, the question is whether their products, which sell for hundreds of thousands per, are still Porsches or are they something else? This shop wouldn’t sell a single car without the Porsche mystique, and yet they completely reinterpret the car with no input from the factory.

John Richards Chris Harris was on Joe Rogans podcast and Joe actually asked him what Porsche thinks of the Singer. Chris said many guys at Porsche love Singer. The only issue they have is the “911” brand name. They don’t like anyone playing with their intellectual property. So technically you have to call this car a “911 reimagined by Singer” to avoid legal issues.

There are only so many original platforms left to modify, might as well start from scratch. I can imagine that such an act though would require input and approval from Stuttgart directly, didn't RUF do something similar during their heyday?
@mr.butterworth

brent cabot Factory support and approval certainly couldn't hurt. I don't think RUF has ever built from scratch, but rather started with bodies in white, partially assembled factory Porsches. Basically similar to the starting point at which Singer modifies their own cars.

One of Chris Harris' best vids. I can't decide which is my favourite (there are a few) but this is top 5. Aside from the car itself - mouth-watering - it's obvious Rob Dickinson knows he's being interviewed by another 911 tragic, and that's what brings his huge passion for the 911 out. Half a mill? Why not? Excellence should be rewarded.

Always loved 911's and I agree about how they have a 'friendly face; which is king of refreshing in a world of scowling, aggressive sports cars. I would venture to say that the duality he spoke of with the 911 would also apply to the Corvette. Both are cars that can happily do daily driving duty, maybe pack some groceries occasionally, and tear up a track when the owner feels like it.

+Alison Rice Maybe the car isn`t that "simple"? The 20 year old electrical system of the 964 is completly replaced with a lightweight, state of the art system that surpasses most current road car and motorsport systems in both quality, longevity and functionality. A Cosworth Pectel engine management unit,Motec power distribution modules replace the entire fuse system along with motorsport and military specification connectors and wiring upgrades. Data logging and diagnostic abilities to allow remote access to service data for vehicles where ever they are in the world,that s**t ain`t cheap... Much like Paganis,money isn`t an issue when building a Singer. Getting the best components available is

It`s really quite sad that a market has emerged for Americans to spend half a million dollars on a tarted up old Porsche 911 because in essence they have over the years not really manufactured enough desirable alternatives of their own, It does seem to be not purely a financial situation but a cultural thing, USA car buyers it`s Luxury = Oversized, Performance = Only in a straight line, It`s such a shame because they are well capable of manufacturing them and the market is there

***** Know all about them. Neither the Corvette of Viper can match the European sports cars in terms of refinement. When I lived in Germany I owned an 89 base 944 and my roommate had a 91 Vette. Sure the Vette was faster but in terms of driving enjoyment the 944 was far and away better. The new Corvettes are much better but so are the new Porsche's.

musicisfree91 euro cars have more refinement than a Vette or Viper...American cars were never about tuxedo's if you will...they were rugged like the wild west: untamed, brute power without finesse. Because of euro's, America stepped up Thier game. (I'm glad they did) I for one would love to drive and own a Vette or a viper someday...that guttural exhaust note as you reach peak rpm as you engage the clutch and depress the gas and get pushed back into your seat as your sense tell you to scream... this is what makes American cars, American. They never set out to BE euro's but strive to BEAT them in a races. They have successfully done that in all major internationally recognized sanctioned races.

The road Chris drove the Singer on is a rather famous and tight one named Little Tujunga Canyon Road. None of it can really use a gear higher than third, as you can see cambers are lovely but rather tight. There is a famous African and American animal sanctuary up there called Wildlife Waystation, operated by a woman who used to work for the U.N. and I've volunteered there years ago. It's a lovely place to take a drive or a ride on a motorcycle, but the sheer drop offs and lack of continuous guard rails in areas means it doesn't suffer fools gladly.

The car is awesome! I have rarely seen so good explanation, of all the effort in the project, the issues to remake something from one purpose to a different one. The car is still classic, driving for pros only, no traction control, or any other assists. Just a pure rear engine layout with a very wide rear tires, typically wider wheelbase and wider tires to help rear engine handle very well, but still real analogue experience. The widened body kit they developed for a year is just as it was the best wide body kit from its 90's time.It is not even a kit you put on the car as skids and bumpers, but they did the the car body itself, cut and add.. Awesome!
